Would hate to see Muprhy forced into retirement but with the way he plays it's only a matter of when, not if.

If he somehow passes this testing and is cleared to play, he will need to adjust his game if he wants to have a long career.

From the club's perspective this really is worse case scenario if we don't learn about whether Murphy will play in 2024 until after the trade period ends.

Going into next season with Moore and Frampton our KPD would be... interesting.

True, but there may not be many trade targets we are keen on anyway after Doedee and Khamis.

The only positive is that I believe if your career is ended by injury you get a large payout and ongoing assistance from the AFLPA.

Hopefully Murphy is well looked after moving forward.

We've seen many greats from both AFL and NRL having massive issues when they're older
That was a few CBAs ago. There is now an injury/termination formula - think it maxes out at something like 30 match payments, plus the players have the hardship fund and a few other bits and pieces.

Doesn't matter, we need someone.

What if Moore does a hammy again? Our two KPD positions will be... Frampton and Maynard? Frampton and Howe?
If we are using this example, and all you want is “backup” then it will just be another frampton. Unless it’s a developing kid which takes years anyway.

We can’t just have an a grade defender sitting in the vfl if someone gets injured.

Moore
Frampton
Howe
Dean (foot needs to stand up through pre-season but highly rated, internally)
Begg (will be trialled & played as KPD in '24)
Kreuger (has played KPD & would suit him more re playing within his physical capabilities)
Kelly (if he's retained ..multi-positional)
Reef (has the physical profile if needed to go back; would need time to develop but could do a role)
Mihocek /McStay (could be swung back if injuries bite 6-deep)

I’m pretty sure it matters, we’d be expending resources for options we potentially don’t rate as upgrades over Frampton/Dean/Ryan.

Dean has yet to prove his body can even stand up to afl footy, let alone prove he’s good enough for afl. Ryan is a long way away and not kpd.

If Murphy goes our entire kpd stocks are Moore and Frampton, and Frampton isn’t very good..

How many teams have a grade defenders just sitting in the 2’s? If Murphy retires then the club will deal with it. We can’t just have a graders waiting as back up. A developing KPP would be handy, but they take time

I know, but they club isn’t going to trade for someone they don’t rate.

the fact you bring up reef McInnes, Kelly, Begg and Krueger as AFL KPD options should really send off alarm bells in your head…

no alarm bells .. best to be calm.

read the comments (qualifiers) in parenthesis for each of the names listed.

as it 'currently' stands, if injuries cut through the first 4 names then the 'next 4' (kreuger, begg, reef & kelly) will come into play.

murphy: 193 cms 79 kgs (plays tall but very athletic & also covers medium talls)
  • kreuger: 196 cms 93 kgs
  • begg: 197 cms 99 kgs
  • reef: 194 cms 90 kgs (prob. projects as the closest athletic profile to Murph)
  • kelly: 194 cms 84 kgs
the 'next 4' have the physical profile (height /weight) to play tall-back and have had 'some' experience playing KPD albeit none would be at the standard /level of Murphy.

i do agree, though, Wrighty's interest in a Khamis or Doedee type suggests we are looking to further bolster that flexible /athletic / intercepting type defender.

Someone posted yesterday in the trade and free agency forum that Murphy was unable to consume any alcohol because of his symptoms.
Unsure if true just what someone had posted.

Not drinking would be part of the concussion protocols I’d have thought. He cleared the test but I’d assume that because he wasn’t able to return to the game he’d still be under the protocols

If Murphy is unable to make it Billy Frampton back would be fine in my opinion. Just needs to play a role and doesn’t have to be a world beater. Howe has another year left.

Just get Ruscoe back and on the rookie list. Looked like a good role player in the exact position until Murph overtook him and in the one game on Anzac Day this year although rusty, did some great things that helped us win in the last 1/4. Terrible timing delisting him really. Doubtful we’ll find a better ready made replacement so easily

Ruscoe never played in Murphy's position. Ruscoe is more akin to Howe than Murphy

Frampton did a good job when filling in at the back earlier this year. I think he’d be fine, especially with a consistent run at it.
