Nathan Thompson to Roos for picks #10 & #26 (the supermerged thread)

It will be interesting to see if North can make a footballer out of Thompson - in the same way we did with Pyke and Robbins (although delisted).

If we can, he will be an excellent draft choice.

If he plays like he has at Hawthorn, then the draft picks are wasted.

Either way, Laidley's days are numbered.

Sure it's great that we've got all these draft choices.. 2,5,10 and whatever...... so thats great and all... but what is hawthorn gonna do... we need at least one key target, Maybe barker could go chf if he had a good pre season, but holland full forward, no way. Dixon maybe not get traded and play him and williams out of the sqaure? Crawford play forward? Or trade whitnall for pick 21? Thompson, even though his form was average, was important for hawthorn.

Do you know anything about football, or in particular, the North Melbourne Football Club? How can you say Dean Laidleys days are numbered? So far he has had 2 years at the helm and at the start of both years a lot of people have tipped North to finish in the bottom 2 or 3. Although we haven't made the finals in either year most people would say we have performed above expectations. We have won as many games as we have lost in that period while also making youngsters such as Wells, Harris, Motlop, Hale, Petrie, and Firrito regular senior players. With the group of young talent we have coming through, and the recruiting of needed players like Nathan Thompson, all looks good for the future.

Trade them to us for Ottens! ;)

Time will tell.

Do you think King was treated fairly?

I would prefer not to slag Laidley. But, is he making all the right decisions?

Remember Schimma.

I'm happy with the trade... If you take the father son rule into account, the situation for us could be seen like this...

Kangaroos get Thompson & Smith (3rd round) out of their first 3 draft picks.

If someone said we would use our 1st round pick to get Smith, then used say 2nd and 3rd picks to get Thommo, the situation would be exactly the same for us, but obviously different for Hawthorn.

Now Im only using this for illustrative purposes, but it shows that with Jesse Smith already going to the Roos, we haven't really given up a lot. We are getting a potential top 5 draft pick for basically nothing, and Thompson for 2 picks. We were always going to trade our first pick knowing that we will get Smith, so I am not dissapointer at all.

Also, who knows who will be picked up with picks 10 and 26. Might play 1 game between them, might play 500 games between them. Draft picks are always a gamble.

win-win. simple as that. you can argue both sides, and agree with each side. always a gamble with draft picks, but i think it would have been one hell of a gamble to keep Thomo on....

I know I wouldn't be happy if my club thought like that. It shouldn't be about just notching up the 4 points in a given offseason, its about making your list good enough to be excellent.

By your rationale you could've effectively had two first rounders, but instead you've effectively turned one into a third rounder. Thats not a good result in anyone's book, I'd have thought.

Admittedly though Porthos, we have spent the last few years notching up a fair few draft picks so now this is our year to exchange draft picks for a player.

What people miss is that Thompson expressed he is keen to play with the roos and turn his life around. Now before his depression came out in the open, he was an excellent forward, one of the best on his given day. Sure, on saturday night he said he wasn't motivated to play football, but the fact that he is keen to come to the roos shows that he can change his life around, and importantly for the club, recapture his form of a year or 2 ago... remember he is 26 and still has a good 5 years left in him.

It's all got to do with the age/development structure of our list. Hodge Is God got it right (in the most intelligent post I've seen from him ;) ) when he said that Porter and McKernan are past it, while Hale and McIntosh aren't ready.

Except for Petrie, our ruckmen/forwards are either right at the end of their career or right at the start. Don't know if you saw Hale get smashed around this year, but he needs time and carefully measured exposure while he bulks up. McIntosh and Chad Jones are in the same boat. Don't know what Collingwood supporters think, but I'm convinced that Josh Fraser's career was set back several years when Tony Shaw threw him to the wolves in his first season. He's only just getting back on track now...

Thompson buys us this time by giving us a first ruck option (the role Porter should have been able to fill) as we continue to blood Hale, and then taking over from Sav for the next couple of years as our younger forwards gain experience. Ottens/Simmonds would have been chased to fill the same role.

We have kids coming out of our ears at the moment, and another top 10 pick in this draft.

We gave up too much, but he fills a need, has expressed a real desire to play with North, and we seem to have done our research thoroughly. Will accept him with open arms.

Congratulations Both clubs, just wanted to add my 2 cents that North once again seem to be trying to top up their list instead of getting young talent. O well

I thought when Laidley came in he promised a youth policy.First he swaps Teague and Morrell for McKernan and now pretty much swaps your 2004 draft for Thompson who is 27 by the start of the season and questioning publicly ,his commitment to football.

Is Laidley trying to save his own bacon before his contract is renegotiated?

Do the Roos have any more draft picks ? Perhaps we could interest them in Holland or Barker!

worth a shot! :D

lol
:D
lmao

Maybe we can trade Dutchy for a couple of footys and a tackle bag

Nick, I am sorry, but if you want respect, take a pay cut or retire

PS If Dutchy plays more than 10 games and averages more than 4 marks and a goal a game I will barrack for Essendon next time they are in Perth.

Your lack of knowledge is disturbing.

Hale, McIntosh, Chad Jones, Perry, Shore. All very young talls, all not ready to play a big role in the senior side yet (although Hale should play 22 games next season barring injury). One could argue Jesse W Smith will be able to play as a tall defender if required sometime down the track as well.

Just because you don't hear about our kids as much, doesn't mean they don't exist. Laidley has filled a need with Thompson, and is still breeding a great batch of youngsters down at the club.

you got lucky ****************. don't get carried away.

Just like Freo got lucky when they recruited Pavlich, and the Crows, who could have had pavlich, decided to get Ken McGregor, the AFL's most useless player?

The first trade struck and it's gonna be hard to top this.

A top ten pick for damaged goods - pick 26 is just gravy.

Don't see how the Roos benefit out of this.

Great work Hawkers.

The hawks should have merged when they had the chance. A coach from Melb, assist from Melb, no players left is this the start of the end for the hawks?

Or Donald McDonald ? Glad you took that dud back for free!

Didn't he win 2 games for you last year in 5 rounds when Schwab won that many in 17 ?

In what way is D-Mac a Dud ?

Yes against the Bulldogs and Tigers. Woopdeee Dooo

He was our fowards coach. Nuff said really considering how our fowards have played for the last few years.

Enjoy next year watching Thommo drop chest marks, thats if he can get a game. He was only saved from being dropped to reserves because he was vice-captain.
