Seriously, I'm yet to find a compelling reason why it's played.

No-one can hear except for when you're watching it on TV. It's a pointless exercise.

If people really respected the anthem they would sing it. I don't know about the rest of the course but in the part of Moonee Valley I was stationed in I suddenly realised that I was the only person singing within about 100m of me. And I'm not even an Aussie! It was embarrassing.
