I can't like this post enoughThis is an opportune time for me to get back up on my hobby horse...
The game is Australian rules football. The AFL is merely 1 competition among many hundreds of competitions where the competitors play Aussie rules football. That the AFL have successfully managed to rename the sport after themselves is not only hubris, but they've somehow managed to assume some sort of ownership over our game which, quite frankly, they are so monumentally bad at.
I die a little on the inside when I hear someone say their child plays 'AFL' after enrolling them in Auskick...
/end rant

Well said.OUR game has been hijacked and stolen by the self righteous AFL Victorians. This is an opportune time for me to get back up on my hobby horse...

I assumeyou area talking to the AFL with your opening two words. Please God no, we don't need a national reserves competition.
The problem is there is already a reserves comp and only four teams (Port, Adelaide, Freo and WCE) aren’t part of it.Please God no, we don't need a national reserves competition.
Wc and Freo will be getting the same sort of top up players WC have now unless the AFL puts in big money, most of the decent Wafl players have jobs so their wage plus what they get from their Wafl club and full time training it won’t be cheap. It won't kill the state comps if they get given a cut of the money. After all the various state amature comps probably have enough players in them to furnish several full clubs of players better than the existing average, but they play down a level because they can get more money (and only train twice a week)
Couple of million each should do it, a drop in the ocean.
Peel is stuffed though.
Claremont were interested at 1 point in doing a 1 club proposal to join the AFL after they had success in an expanded pre season Comp , And made the semi finals back then it was called the Escort Cup if I remember correctly which was a cigarette brand .It was before my time, I couldn't have told you the biggest three WAFL clubs of the 80s, just throwing names out there for an example. Wouldn't really matter in the proposed promotion/relegation system anyway.
I agree, WC will see it as the only way out of their current predicament. No way will they concede their idea was wrong, instead they just move onto a National reserves comp as a natural progression. They will probably offer to fund/subsidies the remaining 4 teams joining just so they can fix their mess. The problem is there is already a reserves comp and only four teams (Port, Adelaide, Freo and WCE) aren’t part of it.
Port, Adelaide and WC will jump ship at earliest opp. So that leaves Freo with no option. It will 100% kill the WAFL and SANFL. The four SA/WA teams will need extra numbers to make sure there are teams each week which just depletes the second tier comps in WA and SA making them irrelevant
I think they plan to pay them a living by televising games and the travel costs are minor as they jump on the charter flights the corresponding afl team is taking.I think it is only worth doing if they can play the players a living. And I don't see that happening even with current expenses. Add in the cost of travel and you have no hope.
It is all a reminder about how small the game really is. In England even third tier soccer* players earn much more than players in the AFL. At that level the average salary is about AUD690k, wheras the AFL has just punched through 400k. Their third tier league includes the 45th to the 68th ranked teams in the country. Players in the second tier of English soccer average over AUD3.1 million.
Even with only 18 teams we would be playing our national reserves players peanuts. If you are going to pay peanuts you can't subject them to any sort of travel regime. Waste of time.
* it is well established that soccer is a stupid game
I agree with this.In the same way North refused to relocate to Qld, Freo should refuse to join a National Reserves competition (unless all games are in Perth).
Last thing we need is more interstate travel.
where will th emoney come from really though? what are those tv rights going to be worth?I think they plan to pay them a living by televising games and the travel costs are minor as they jump on the charter flights the corresponding afl team is taking.
The clubs have the money, it’s about the AFL giving a direction on how much they can spend, you only need to pay the 20 top up players 100k each (2mil) and they are on a decent wage. virgin provides the flights (schedule interstate trips with the AFL teams) give clubs extra spending for accommodation and away you go.where will th emoney come from really though? what are those tv rights going to be worth?
The clubs have the money,
Not every AFL have the money. There are still a few sucking onthe teat of the AFL,The clubs have the money, it’s about the AFL giving a direction on how much they can spend, you only need to pay the 20 top up players 100k each (2mil) and they are on a decent wage. virgin provides the flights (schedule interstate trips with the AFL teams) give clubs extra spending for accommodation and away you go.
The choice is whether we want our reserve’s playing interstate every second week or not and the impact on local leagues of us and WC plundering the 40 best players each year.
See, freo and WC could afford that and still turn a profit. AFL would sell the tv rights, at least half the games every week would be a double header with the AFL game coming before or after the seconds game, there’d be increased sponsorship money to have logos on the seconds team uniforms.Do they? Thirty people per team (24 + staff) at $200 a ticket each way every second week is $132,000. Sharing a hotel room two per room at $200 a night for two nights is another $66,000. Let's pay all the players and staff $40,000, that's $1,200,000 for a total footy department spend of $1,398,000 excluding all kits, meals, medical expenses, insurance, equipment etc.
And I suspect that the prices I've used here are potentially out by up to 100%.
WAFC royalty payment last year was $2,250,000. Total profit for 2022 was $2,428,000.
I don't think Freo can afford that footy program and we are quite well off AFL wise.
Every team except Adel, Port, Freo and WC are already in the VFL, we’re the ones who would need to cough up, all 4 can afford it.Not every AFL have the money. There are still a few sucking onthe teat of the AFL,
Some, if not money are still relying on the AFL to feed the with extra picks within the draft etc.
No, all clubs do not have money.
The top up player’s would be the same as the ones that WC scrounge up, any decent Wafl player wont sign up unless the renumeration is bloody good, anyway i don’t reckon this will happen anytime soon.Every team except Adel, Port, Freo and WC are already in the VFL, we’re the ones who would need to cough up, all 4 can afford it.
