NEAFL- 2014

I see Redland accounted for the Lions easily yesterday by 41 points. After Aspley towelled them up a few weeks ago is this evidence that the wheel has turned and the local sides will now dominate the Lions?

You may see the lions with a different attitude towards the comp this year.

Not much being spoken about the NT Thunder this year which surprises me. Rocco is back, that's enough for me to like them!!

Another dopey question from me.....and they say there's no such thing as a stupid question but just a stupid answer.
Bare with me please......

What will happen to the NEAFL at the end of this season ? I understood that the NSW/ACT teams would have their involvement reassessed at season's end - is that correct ? And what becomes of them if they miss the cut ?

And where do the recently reassessed QLD/NT teams stand at season's end ?

The jungle drums that I am hearing are beating out a tune that is different from what I expected.

After all the effort that is going into strengthening all community NEAFL clubs and improving grounds and corporate governance, it's hard to imagine them being cut adrift so soon.
I think you will the Canberra based teams carved again

How do you guys feel about GWS having no restriction on players during the H & A season?
I believe all the afl teams have unrestricted numbers, the new comp had to go that way for any credibility. The most ridicules part is he fact northern based teams don't play giants or swans. Farcical

Something that might interest the lads on here. Someone close to me interviewed for a few managerial gigs in the ACT over the summer. There football budget doubles sometimes triples anything spent by the 3 Bris based Neafl teams. Fact.

Dogwarna if you go to the Rules & regs on the NEAFL website and go to Section 16 Special requirements you will see that Lions, Suns & Swans are restricted to 18 listed players against non Afl sides except NT and only 15 on the ground at any one time. GWS have no restrictions against the Non Afl sides.

LAB1,

Welcome back, I have missed your sensible and at times your light hearted and sometimes scathing attacks (when warranted) comments - Thank you for your observations on the above, this IMO is a very important development in the on going structure of the NEAFL and this will ensure the GWS Giants will be, if not taking out the GF this season they should be in the very least playing in it, depending on injuries etc.

Dogwarna,

Please explain?

Why would "the Lions have a different attitude towards the comp this year"? AFL Football in general in all Northern States has been butchered, beheaded and then restructured so the Lions and the other 3 AFL reserve grade sides could have their, longed for better standard of competition. If I take what you are saying by your comment above (as they have had a winning attitude in the last two years with winning two flags) as the Lions will be a Club that will again just go through the motions of participation, like they have be known to do in the not to distant past and not be fair dinkum, then some very big questions need to be asked of this club and all of those who pushed for the decimation of NEAFL and the game as we knew it.

Dogwarna, your answer for this lies in 17.2 of Total Player Payments, only applies to Qld & NT NEAFL clubs.

Given Qbn have no money and nor do Belconnen this season (did they not lose players due to to being asked to take pay cuts) I would find this hard to believe

Thanks Billy, Love Footy and the great real footy people but unfortunately there is still much to be done.In fact I am not sure if we are going forwards or backwards, that will become clearer as this season unfolds. I am certain that the propensity for those in control to organise desired outcomes has not abated and that is troubling for many.

You have named 2 clubs, and there is more to a football budget than player payments. I can guarantee you now that the Canberra based teams leave the Qld based teams for dead in football budget spending, and to clarify this, it was noted to a Qld based club official the budget differences and he early had a cardiac, and yes LAB they don't have a salary cap down there

Competitions change and so do coaches, coaches have there own ideas as to how they choose to use the comp there reserves play in

i think the lions will still try to win every match they compete in but may try blokes in other positions trying to get them into AFL footy....

Agree Dog - $100K for a GM at one of the Canberra based clubs...

And agree re the Lions side too Speedy - and i think they will win a fair few games all the same, in fact a lot more than they lose.

Dogwarna,

Thanks for your not so direct explanation of my question asked, I guess your above answer is to the best of your ability under the circumstances, as I realise it should not be you who answers to this if the way it may pan out is to my suspicious interpretation.

Whatever happens throughout the season, myself as a member, along with a lot of others of the NEAFL supporter base here in Qld and those in NSW, ACT and NT, I feel it should be every AFL Club's affiliated NEAFL Reserves sides charter - to play their best possible football in what ever competition they play in.

If not, there lies a dangerous precedence for the acceptance of Tanking by the club, which I point out is frowned against by the National Body, this best possible football should be played by all clubs, if not for only club and State pride, then for up lifting the standard of this recently revamped NEAFL competition, this new look competition that they (the 4 AFL Clubs) had changed due to their constant crying that their Reserve sides did not have the quality of competition, they needed to improve their Draftees and their Rookies ability to be given every opportunity to be able to be turned into that of true AFL Footballers, this was done at the great expense of the former Clubs from the Northern States and Territory and their players sacrificed present and future, that won't possibly get the opportunity to play within a competition at the highest level within their State structure because of the past and probable on going changes in the future.

It will be a very big mistake for the credibility of the NEAFL, the AFLQ, the AFLNSW, the AFLACT, The AFL and the game itself, if any of these AFL reserve sides can't or for that matter don't cut the mustard against the local sides around them and the interstate sides they play against throughout the year. If it is either one of the Qld sides who fall into this category, then this will help make the QLD AFL System look like the old basket case it once was and as some say still is, just when we as a State are starting to hold our head up against the rest of the State's AFL Competitions.

Or if either of the NSW AFL Reserve sides are in or get into the same hole as above, then they to will help send their State's AFL Football back to the Dark past.

The NT and current remaining ACT sides within the NEAFL (God love them), can hold their heads up high, as they don't have in there Territory Boundaries (says a lot for the Territorians) the Fair Dinkum elite AFL reserve sides who can choose currently to either play as they should play, (that is to win at all costs and be the best they can be) or the Fair Dinkum disgraceful AFL reserve sides to play as they should not play, (treat the competition and the game itself with contempt by not trying to win at all costs and therefore not be the best that they can be). I have no doubt that all of other NEAFL sides will be busting their gut trying to be the best the can be - starting from this Saturday, no exceptions.

Would anyone like to be in a NEAFL Tipping competition, great chance for us all to make a fool of ourselves in the unchartered waters of the new NEAFL.

ABH, having budgetary cut backs has no relevance to the total amount spent.I see the Queen of England is having some cash flow issues but that does not mean her total expense bill is small.Clubs up here have known the expense spend by the big ACT clubs for sometime and yes they are mind boggling compared to Qld.

I misinterpreted the original post then. I was referring to player payments. There is no doubt some of the ACT club budgets are huge

Life's a beach I'd happily tip with you, even if noone else is keen to.

Im going to win the tips

Anyone going to stick their necks out and predict the final ladder and MVP now the praccys are finished?

Mine:

GWS reserves (long list and generous rules in relation to listed players)
Aspley (grand finalists last year and recruited well)
Suns reserves (the whole club on the rise IMO)
Southport (always around the mark and recruited cleverly)
Redland (excellent pre season)
Ainslie (always strong and a favourable draw)
------------------------------------------------------------
NT Thunder (good recruits but were a fair way off last year)
Swans ressies (lowest finish in a few years but tough draw and due for a bad year-blame it on Buddy)
Lions ressies- the go home 5 clearly weaken the 2's)
Syd Uni- very impressive recruiting but coming from a way back
Hills- picked up a few also but off the pace of the top sides
Belco- lost a few from what I hear
Queanbeyan- off the pace
Eastlake- lost a few also

As for the MVP a young gun from GWS is likely as is a Pfeiffer from Redland. And Boof to kick a bunch of goals again for the Thunder
