Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

This has always been a problem for me, but do any other firefox users have trouble playing afl videoes?

Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

Fair dues for taking the time to read people's comments and then answer them Sandy.

Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

Sandy: Good idea coming to the fans for hints on the kinks. Well I've got one for you.

The entire AFL Essendon site (bombersfc.com.au) is pretty poor and needs to be updated more often, like the other clubs sites are.

Examples: Ryan Bain was cut from the list years ago, and Paul O'Shea was drafted by the Bulldogs last year, not Essendon.

Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

Hi All,
Streaming from Overseas
Ash78 described some problems he’s experiencing streaming from overseas. Video content like match replays are multi-bit encoded between 180k and 600k. The system should deliver the most applicable encode rate based on “your bandwidth available at the time”. Unfortunately the pipes from Europe into Australia are not under our control nor is the “state of the internet” at any moment in time so bandwidth and streaming together, can be problematic.

Streaming from Australia will always be a problem for people overseas. To alleviate this, we have contemplated a “download” product for sport video but this is not in the AFL Program of Work, it’s contained in the BigPond Sport Program of Work.

One caveat: there has been a bug in the video XML widget that is being fixed. This bug has caused old content to display, duplicate content to appear and the widget on the homepage is not operating as efficiently as it should.

Sandy - good reply, appreciate you taking the time to address this.

What you're implying here is that the current architecture is inherently not suitable for use by international subscribers. If so, I would like to see this kind of information included on the FAQs and troubleshooting pages on the site. I have an 8Mbs connection (although currently only operating at 2Mbs), which should fly, and does for other web streams, which would imply the problem IS as you say the distance the data is travelling.

Are there any plans to create a mirror site in Europe or the US to cater for us overseas subscribers?

What PC/Internet set-up do I need to use BigPond TV?

BigPond Broadband
The minimum recommeded plan is 512k. BigPond Broadband customers who are on the 256k plan can still use the Guide but we don't recommend it.
PC Computer
1 GHz computer with an accelerated video card and 256 Mb of RAM.
Windows Operating System
The Guide has been designed to work with Windows XP.
Screen Resolution
The Guide is designed to run at a screen resolution of 1024 x 768
Web Browser
Internet Explorer 6. You can download the latest version from Microsoft
Flash Plugin
Latest version required. Download here
Media Player
Please use Windows Media Player 9. Available free to download here

This was last year so with different people but when I rang BigPond to complain about this and stated my refusal to use IE, they gave me a refund.

Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

when i click on Match Report I get the following

Your browser does not support rich content, or you have scripts disabled

Using Opera 9.10 and have never had this problem before. Scripts are not disabled.

ahh, sorry , this is not an encryption issue alone it is the bandwidth allocated by the testra servers for the delivery. It is a disgrace. Im on a genuine 8mb, and i get no more than a couple of minutes stream, then about the same cache. It is truly pathetic.

Removing all control from the standard users browser for controlling the delivery of this content compounds this. Why, because they are looking after their own interests first. (their IPR over users enjoyment)

Telstra have also decided to capitalise on advertising during the stream with 4,5,6 ads at a time. A truly inconceivable concept.

The AFL has to realise that they are losing plenty by their very poor use of the internet, it is nothing less than a complete shambles for any overseas user wishing to watch the game.

Anyone on earth should be able to, within reason, access the games they want over the internet at at least a reasonable quality.

Absolutely killing themselves.

Telstra A.F.L. site is without doubt the poorest site I have ever come across.

Entire focus is on attempting to limit content and disallow non-confirming users. A complete denial of web ethics and standards.

Its very poor in almost all regards.

Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

Morning,

NickSavo asked about watching a Collingwood video, yes, all Australian broadband users will be able to. I mentioned in a previous thread that Club content remains exclusive, well I got that wrong! Club video will be available to all.

I also checked in on match highlights and yes they're available to all. However, we've just changed the business model so I double checked with our developers who maintain BigPond TV, and the business rules haven't been changed yet. The new business rules will be in place pre March 30.

Madness is experiencing problems watching video with Firefox. Unfortunately I don't have BigPond TV in my patch. I believe it's built perfectly for IE only.

ash78 - I just don't know about about international bandwidth. The pipes into our video caches and servers are huge so it's difficult for me to find solutions to overseas bandwidth problems. THe good news ... We've just partnered with a sports right specialist to look at how we can better use our international rights. I mentioned ysterday a "download" product is one idea and you mention a mirror site which could be another business model. It is on the agenda to do something new this year ash78 so we'll keep you posted.

audas mentioned 4,5 6 ads in video. That is incorrect. I have been extremely strict on ads in video because BigPond TV contains mostly video from my portfolio, sport. There is an ad at the beginning of the video only. That is on demand video. For live streams (eg. V8 Supercars), we do go to ad breaks. Well less than TV though.

Cheers,
Sandy

Audas is correct. I watched the Carlton Essendon game and at some point in every quarter there was a long break for ads. The quality was terrible and you guys are going to have to come up with a better answer for it than blaming it on bandwidth out of Australia.

If your service does not work within the architecture currently available then you need to change the way your service is delivered.

Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

Sandy, fair play to you for seeking out and (I assume)acting on people's advice / suggestions. I find businesses that do this (usually in hospitality) are the ones that provide the best service. As others have said the advertising is very "in your face" but I guess we do have to accept that the AFL / Telstra are businesses out to make profits.

Simple question for you though please mate:

Is all the fancy stuff (ie. lots of MB) there partly to force people into broadband? Or is that just a conspiracy theory and are 90% of Aussies already on broadband anyway?

Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

Only request I have is to simply back up the call for HTML stats.

They are simple and give us who are after them what we need - hopefully these are able to be put in place.

I loved the HTML stats too. I actually created an Excel spreadsheet, where I could copy the stats grid from the HTML pages and paste it into the spreadsheet and it would calclate the DreamTeam totals for each player.

If they dont have the HTML stats I wont be able to use the spreadsheet. These is why I would love the DreamTeam totals on the GameDayLive stats.

I'm addicted to any sort of Fantasy League!

Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

Non BigPond Customer Access

BigPond buys content like the exclusive New Media Rights to AFL in order to acquire and retain customers. This is an identical business model to that of PayTV. However, in 2007, we have opened up more video than ever before. Content that remains exclusive to BigPond customers and international subscribers is:
  • Match replays (Good news is the enforced holdback is now only 12 hours not 24 hours)
  • Club content
  • Create your own highlights
  • Live events (eg. U/18’s, Draft)
Has BigPond ever considered allowing non BP users to pay for access to this content without forcing them to use BigPond as their ISP? It has always seemed rather blinkered to me that BigPond would ignore a large potential income source like this just for the sake of pushing BigPond-as-ISP signups. I would definitely consider paying AFL.com.au for video access (match replays especially), but there's no way I'd switch ISP just for that.

If BigPond were to offer paid subscriptions to Aussie viewers, BP subscribers would still get a material advantage (unmeteted content) but it would open up a much larger market for BigPond to recoup what it has spent getting the New Media Rights.

I have always found that strange as well, there is a MASSIVE market that they arent reaching. They should make it free to bigpond subscribers and charge a fee to all the other people that want to use it.

Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

Hey all,

GameDayLive Update ,

There's been some really great suggestions coming through (some already noted and known) for GameDayLive. There's an ongoing Program of Work for GameDayLive so a lot of the bigger suggestions (eg. DreamTeam results in InGameBar, etc, have been added to this list).

In terms of what we'll change for this coming weekend (Round 2 NAB Cup), here's a snapshot.

InGameBar Module on AFL.com Homepage
  • Auto shuffle will be implemented so you always see the current day's games rather than having to manually shuffle this panel
  • Timezone: all games will be displayed in "local" time and this will be made clearer
  • The scores on this module and the scores on the dashboard on the right hand side of AFL.com homepage will have the same refresh rate of 60 seconds
GameDayLive Application
  • We've changed Pitch to Ground
  • We've changed the alphabetical listing of player names to be by last name
  • We've changed the format and order of stats to be and include: Kicks, Handballs, Marks, HitOuts, Tackles, Frees For, Frees Against, Goals, Behinds. The data feed that supplies GameDayLive currently doesn't include Possessions so we've this request to the GameDayLive Program of Work
  • We're making the live radio button more accessible by moving the button closer to the scoreboard
  • Timezone: all games will be displayed in "local" time and this will be made clearer
Again, appreciate your your feedback.

Sandy

Very nicely done Sandy, it looks very good on the company when someone like yourself takes the time to actually address the fans. Well done.

Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

Sandy,

I've been trying to watch the weekend wrapup show on the website. A couple of things.

Firstly, it told me that I need to be a bigpond member to watch it. So I clicked the link from the BigpondTV page and it worked.

Second and most importantly, the BigpondTY page keeps refreshing and when it does that makes the video buffer. This is not an overal traffic problem becuase I've been watching it and trying to do as much downloading at other sites to see if I can cause it to buffer. I can't. The problem is dirrectly related to the refreshing of the page.

Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

I cant be bothered reading all the posts, so if this has been stated then disregard this post:

I want to be able to copy and paste the stats for the games (both during the game and after the game). The Game Day Live doesnt allow to select text, therefore you cant copy stats.

Re: BetaSite of AFL.com.au

Hey All,

Few more updates for you:

Leper makes a comment about the website bing all fancy (ie. lots of MB) and is that done to partly to force people into broadband? Or is that just a conspiracy theory and are 90% of Aussies already on broadband anyway ...

There's a few reasons why we wanted to "up the ante" on AFL.com:
  1. More than 82% of AFL.com users are on broadband
  2. The number of Australians on broadband is growing fast.
  3. Users want more interactivity, more video, more more more, and more is easier to do on broadband. I know this will spark numerous reactions from all of you but essentially, we get 100's of requests for more more more, and it's just easier to offer "more" on broadband.
As I acknowledged the other day though, we do need to get the page weight down and we'll continue to work on that as a separate initiative.

DreamTeam
It's definitely only around the corner, I just don't have a date. Last I heard, it is only a week or two away.

Stats
Stats have been built into the main nav and we're just waiting to turn it on. Apparently historical stats requires some minor assistance from an external partner and we're checking in with them.

For current stats, if you go into Match Reports (from fixtures and results on the homepage), click on Match Report and you scrape the stats from there.
Ultimately, you'll be able to scrape them for your own use from the Stats nav when that gets turned on.

BigPondTV
There's definitely something weird around the business rules of what can and can't be watched and I've got someone looking into this. Joshem, re: buffering, Yuk. Will look into it.

Like yesterday, better go do some work ... :)

Cheers
Sandy
