30 entities editing the site?

Theres your problem.

Go look up what the definition of a good website is. Try at google first. Elegant, simple, non-bullshit ****ed up design!

news.google.com is the same.

The afl website is a joke. A disgrace. A farce. I'm betting a fair chunk of cash has been spent on developing the afl site. And it hasn't paid off.

KISS - Keep it simple, stupid.

Paul, you clearly havent' been involved in a large scale website with multiple feeds from multiple sources.

When I say 30 there are:
  • 16 Clubs that manage and edit and maintain their own sites
  • Company for tipping
  • Company for vapour
  • Company for editorial
  • COmpany for news
  • Company for dev
  • Company for design
  • Company for official stats
  • Companies for video
  • Company for official photos
etc etc etc

There is no one company that can do the lot. If there was, it'd be magical.

Cheers
Sandy

They're winning!

I did offer to put a crew together to completely rebuild the site a while back if I remember rightly.

Just pathetic!

Who is paying this mob?

We have WebCentral on the case right now... (all the infrastructure is hosted there).

It looks like the database has pegged itself for no apparent reason. It normally runs around 15-25% and has been stable all weekend. At around 7pm tonight, it went up to 100%. At this moment in time WebCentral and C4 are investigating.

This is a disaster, I agree. I am f**king cranky but I have no further information at this time (8pm aest).

Users are being throttled back in as I write.

I'll come back as soon as I have more.

Hey Sandy are the AFL happy with the site??

Sandy, there would be a myriad of websites around the globe that would be dealing on a much larger scale than us.... see NBA.com, MLB.com for instance. Are you stating that you have multiple vendors above? That's not 30 companies having direct input into the site's structure and function I wouldn't have thought. And what's the difference from previous years when the site was fine?

I have, and I was good at it.

Clubs websites are individual. Similar template of design, and would have the same backend software to update news, etc.

Stats are located on a central db that all sites feed off. Nothing much to worry about there, just the imput.

News: You can't setup individual access based on heirarchy? Setting permission for certain areas to be updated by people with the correct access?

What I don't understand is why someone would agree on the design that is very slow, heavy to load, full of code that doesn't work unless the entire page is loaded. But the kicker is for those without extremely fast internet, or a truckload of patience, can't get that. Guess what, that's a majority, not a minority.

Look up CMS - Content Management System. I could design, and co-ordinate the setup of a better website. Shit, you know what: I did using a pre-made one. I can't code, but I can co-ordinate, and do it very well.

You're listing excuses, and they're not very good. Websites aren't hard to design, and maintain.

I'm not sure if you work for afl.com.au, or the afl. However I'll give you some tips for free for next season when you guys re-design it.

- Simplify the design. Simple. Smart. Elegant.
- Use better code. PHP & MySQL. Don't use javascript. Unless the page loads (entire page) it won't work properly.
- Don't use flash on the main page. What's wrong with HTML? Remember, a good site is also one that loads fast, as well as looks good.
- The site is probably located on Telstra servers (edit, I was wrong, they're on worse servers), and still loads slow. This is got to be telling you guys something regardless of traffic.
- Alternatives. Design is about including everyone, fitting everyone's needs. Have a low-fi version of the site.
- Forums: Try it. Feedback, discussion, input.

I know what I'm on about. There might be different companies for different things, that's a good thing. Set permissions, etc.. and just pray they don't get the round numbers wrong when updating the website.

You can even drop me a PM if you want me to consult. I'm not qualified in anything, but I sure know what I'm on about.

Don't mean to be rude, or a smartarse, however there are a lot more people out there with worse problems viewing the site and they're a lot more pissed than I am.

Cheers.

We've just finished round 3 and problems are still occurring

Why couldn't the site have been left as it was last year?

So every year when a new site is made will we keep on having the same problems occurring for the first half a dozen rounds of the season?

I've kept mostly quiet during this thread out of respect for Sandra, but now she says AFL.com.au is hosted by Webcentral! What's wrong with Telstra's setup? I thought Big Pond was supposed to be the biggest and best ISP in the land? That is hilarious. It is most likely nothing to do with Sandra, so no criticism is directed at her, but whoever made that decision obviously didn't think much of Telstra's network grunt.

Live gameday include up to the minute stats? It's always about 2 to 3 minutes behind!

I've noticed that too over the weekend. With all the crap on the site, it must take a few minutes to do something as complicated as adding a behind to a team's score.

The man seems to know what he's on about. I mean, surely if you were looking to develop a sports site, the first place to look would be the NBA, NFL and MLB sites. Imagine an American checking afl.com.au! He wouldn't be very impressed would he?

Sandy,

Is anyone at bigpond working to improve the quality of film for the replay service your site provides? You can't deny that there's a problem with the resolution. It's like watching the game through your car's windshield in the rain without your wipers on. Can anything be done to fix it? Any reply would be appreciated.

Thanks,
RT

Please Sandy, go back to last year's format! Simple but affective. Stop trying to fix this hack. Please! This is a plea now, because you haven't listened to the people other times.

I didn't like last years format either.

To be honest, I don't think I've ever liked the AFL site.
