I saw he was on TV tonight with Richard Marles. I just put my hands on my hips and started shaking my head. IMO, he should be concentrating on captaining Fremantle and fixing his performances on the footy oval instead of leaning into politics. Maybe he was just there to ask Dick about defence tactics.

Marles was in the club HQ campaigning for the yes vote, with which the club is publicly aligned. The captain is compelled to appear - that’s the gig.

And what a pity it is a part of the gig.

It would be so refreshing if they would stay out of politics.

Anyway, back to his form and injuries being a weekly liability. He is not the Drummond of the AFL. Used to be effective at a few things and do them very well. Now he doesn't even do that and the opposition love to see him with ball in hand.

Body hair wise it is a close run thing, although for Andre it was more on shoulders and back that Pearce.

I am gobb smacked that people think that footballers or sports people should have no say or be heard in regards to politics.
Does it hurt that some have differing opinions to yours?
If people here do not know who Richard Marles is, I suggest you all step aside from making comment re sporting people making comment on political issues.
Obvioulsy you know JS about what Alex was promoting.
They like you and I have a right to an opinion on things political and it just proves they know more than those bagging him out here.

All politicians are campaigners. Don't know why any footy player would want there name attached to any of them, especially some random bloke no one has ever heard of.

Prime minster? Yeah alright. This bloke? Nah.

How have I never heard of this bloke? What the hell is Alex Pearce doing hanging out with this campaigner?
Well the only way you haven't heard of him is you have no interest in politics and probably never watch the news. Like, you're clearly not paying much attention to what's going on around you if you don't know who the deputy PM is.

Politicians are not 'all campaigners'. It's actually a pretty crappy job IMO and credit to those who feel strongly enough about their society/community to pursue a career like that. Many have no personal life and very little if any free time.

Why would he be associated with him? You've already been told the answer to this, it comes with the job of being captain of a football club.

Believe me I watch news plenty. Richard Marles is a nobody in my mind.

He is a tax payer same as you and I.
He is entilted to hang with who ever he wants and to have his opinion heard.
And incidentally did you realise that our skipper is aboriginal!!! So maybe he want his voice heard.
So according to your view, he would have been ok if he hung with the Hands on Faith Healer. He was our last PM.

People, as long-time defenders generally get, are giving Pearce a pretty savage end of the stick. He's doing lots of good things, even while not having his best season. All players, ALL, have their ebbs and flows seasons.

The captaincy can be quite a weight that needs adjusting to (transitioning from a stand-in role to incumbent can be quite an adjustment too - see coaches).

Having said that, what I would like to see Pearce have is much more intent to destroy/attack the highball aerial contest.

So often he waits at the back of the pack, which is a bit criminal for a guy his size. I don't know if that's a (not very good) strategy thing, a lack of confidence or just not wanting to hurt people, but it's definitely cost us a few goals and allowed some opposition key talls to gain confidence from taking pack marks under favourable conditions.

Destroy Alex, Destroy.

Perhaps his form is linked to the injury he has been managing for the last 8/10 weeks.

O hai Kenyan, looks like AP's personal defender is back.

AP has not been playing at his best, that leaves him open to criticism and even more so as captain. Brayshaw has been carrying an injury for most of the season as well. He cops criticism in most match day and autopsy threads when he isn't meeting the heights of last season, and he is playing better than AP (probably still top 5 in the Doig).

Back to the subject of Pearce as Freo captain, sorry to say imo he is an underwhelming captain and is now quite iffy as a player (probably injured to some extent)
Serong is the best captaincy material in the side by a comfortable margin.
I still got Brayshaw and Serong co-captains next year. We'll see.

I wonder if Alex got thrown to the wolves a little bit to protect Caleb and Andy? I doubt we expected to be bottom 4 but I do think we knew we might fall a way a little and didn't want to lower their confidence or something.

I frankly refuse to believe (based purely off media conferences and the like) that anyone would pick AP of either of the other two. That's not a knock on AP either more just an endorsement of the level of leader those boys are.

Alex Pearce = pat Cummins
Soft with no it all political agendas ..

Considering many thought last season a big success and AP was standin skipper for the majority of it one can't be surprised that the group didn't change things up.

From the outside looking in Andy and Caleb really set the tone for the club last season and in the offseason. The boys seemed to for the most come back in ripping shape (this never includes Luke Ryan). That we have performed so abysmally I put down to the coach. We run out games ok we just start them shyte because we are seemingly setup to fail and that is on the coach.

Peter Bell has also failed the club with his list management. You can't blame AP for being voted in, it was natural given last year that he would put his hand up. The club should still be able to function despite APs deficiencies. Jonas can't even get a game for port and they are flying. We've been let down by bell and JL way more than AP

All that being said I look forward to Andy and/or Caleb taking the captaincy next year. Hell I'd give it to Hodor if it means he would stay

Alex won the poll on here yeah?

The guy is no champion, in fact he's just a good solid average AFL player (and always has been) who apparently did a good job of standing in as captain last year, so you can see why the club went for him and most posters did too.

My concern at the start of the season was that he wasn't good enough as a player and he openly said that filling in as captain last year took a heavy mental toll on him. I don't believe that a captain needs to be the club's best player but they do need to be one of the best and an inspiration - he's not. And the comments around the toll it took are massive red flags. A true leader loves the challenge and thrives on it. Have to say the club ****ed up. As it did when they gave Mundy the gig. Might need to change the selection criteria.

In a lot of other sports the coaching group picks the captain. He should be an extension of the coach’s authority on the field.
Agree with your comments on the mental toll side of things for Alex - to me it seems like he would just be better off concentrating on his own position.
There is no doubt that he is an inferior player than what he used to be before all this captaincy burden.
