Now we all know Brad Hogg is the number 1 spinner in the ODI scene at this present time but being at the age of 37 obviously his successor is being looked at by the selectors at the moment.

Now the common belief is that Dan Cullen is the second choice spinner behind Hogg and the next cab off the rank. And the stats this year would indicate so as Cullen has been good for S.A in the shorter form of the game. And at 23 would add some needed youth into the Aussie side.

Another option however could be Nathan Hauritz, now at the age of 26 and with previous ODI experience could he be a late bolter. His bowling I believe has improved since his move to N.S.W and his ability to drift and turn the ball has increased. Also his batting is handy towards the later part of an innings.

Thoughts...

I think we need a new spinner in both ODI and Test matches. Who that is however I'm not too sure. We've been blessed with Warne being so good over the years, and even when he was out MacGill was very good. I think both MacGill and Hogg are passed it, but no one in the state games are jumping out and demanding to be selected. I would side towards Cullen, possibily due to following SA, but I think with his youth there is a lot of upside to his game. Having said that I would much prefer we found a leg spinner to bring in. Seems to be much more effective in Aust.

But I think the Test tour just gone showed us how much we miss a geniune quality spinner without Warne. Murali, Harbajan and Kumble were all miles ahead of either of our spinners. And when we were struggling to get wickets in the tight games, we had no Warnie to bring on, and couldn't rely on the spinners because they were a relief for the batsmen. Symonds and Clarke were more effective than Hogg and MacGill.

Obviously I'll get flamed for being "biased", but Hauritz has looked good in patches this season, and so has our other spinner. I always spell his name wrong!

How about Xavier Doherty?

ODD 2007/08 11 wickets @ 33.18 E/R of 4.39

Plays predominantly on the road that is Bellerive, whereas Cullen gets the advantage of Adelaide Oval.

I think that any one day domestic spinner in Australia can fill the void of Brad Hogg.. I think that we, the public and the media read too much into statistics, i think that what they are looking for is a bowler who can go for 2/45 off his 10 overs every game.. Here is my ranking ATM

1. Cullen.... CA Contracted player and is a very attacking bowler
2. Hauritz... Experienced and going at 3.90 runs per over this year in domestic cricket, which is what selectors are looking for
3. Doherty.... Very underated bowler IMO, bowls on bellerive, which is horrendous to bowl on
4. Heal... Good domestic record this year, young and has massive potential

sorry mate.........

5. Chris Simspon... Very hander bat but more suited to the longer format..

Here are the statistics of these 5 players in this years domestic series

Cullen 13 wts @ 28 @ 4.97
Hauritz 7 wts @ 46 4.83 E/R
Doherty 11 wts @ 31 4.39 E/R
Heal 7 wts @ 30 4.22 E/R
Simpson 6 wts @ 38 4.59

You're always biased but I'll agree with you on Hauritz.
Too many people are expecting us to pluck out another Warne (Or even another Hogg who has excellent ODI figures) who can take wickets at will, but if Hauritz can take 1/40 each game I'd be very happy with that.

Spinners in Australia have the hardest job in world cricket bowling in the best domestic league in the world on batsman friendly wickets... I would take any spinner if they took 1/40 every game... thats fantastic figures... If every bowler took 1/40, youd win every game

You won't get flamed for being biased, you'll get flamed for picking a dud.

Another 5 star comeback, you're owning me today! Any chance you could think of something constructive or....? Atleast others have posted stats, and played their part in the sensible discussion.

Pretty much what I was thinking. I'm not a fan of the 4-pronged pace attack, and really feel like we need a specialist spinner, but obviously he has to be able to play a valuable role.

Warne is in the past, we wont discover a clone of him anytime soon, probably because the mum would be impossible to find. Australia just has to pick someone who they think has the potential of doing the most damage/restriction, and give him a go!

I still believe MacGill will come back for a year or so, but during that time we need to trial another young spinner, or two.

Just to make sure I'm not suggesting Hauritz gets a run in the Test arena, just in ODI.
For Tests I don't know who to play. MacGill if he's fit, otherwise I'll be quite worried.

its fair to say that Xavier Doherty has put his hand up for selection for the ODI in the next few years.... looking at the previous 2 seasons, he has taken 11 and 17 wickets respectively at and average of 26..... Now Surely, the people saying that he is a 'pie chucker' should want to review their argument...

Hauritz has more wickets, and unlike Doherty has a decent ODI record for Australia!

ahhhhh..... your wrong mate.... Hauritz took 14 wickets last year and only 8 this year sooo yeah... your wrong... And hauritz has has the opportunity to consolidate a spot in the ODI side and failed to do so

Ahhh! The old "He's had a chance, so he doesn't deserve another one" theory. Imagine our team if the selectors took that approach for the last 15 years.

im not saying that.... hauritz, in my opinion is a great bowler and should be in contention for the next spinners spot, but if you read my previous post, i was talking about consistantly taking wickets over the course of 3-4 seasons..... I believe that any domestic spinner at the moment is capable of taking the reigns of the Austraian front line spinner.... If we had to choose one now it will be...

Tests: McGain
ODI: Cullen, Hauritz, McGain
