Sadly they’re all near the end of their careers - with not many youngsters on the horizon who share their outlookThere are 3 players in the world in cricket, especially tests that dont get rattled by a situation no matter how many balls they have faced: Khawaja, Williamson and Pujara. They treat each delivery accordingly and play shots where they think runs are there.
Other players may feel pressure to hit out if they have accumulated or have been held up for a long period of time.

And thats where T20 cricket has revolutionsed test cricket , to the haters or lovers of some or people who dont have the patience for it.The old school test batsmen that know to bat time and accumulate a long test innings a dying breed unfortunately.
Williamson officially a better test batsman now than Smith, Ponting and Tendulkar.

Smith doesn't have to play Australia though.Don't get me wrong, clearly a quality player but NZ do get to play the minnows a hell of a lot compared to India and Australia.
Williamson against the Big 3
Australia - Average of 41.12
England - Average of 36.85
India - Average of 37.87
13 x 100's v Bangladesh, Windies, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe + you can add the 3 against South Africa D side... that's 16 100's v minnows.
Smith only has 5.

And playing an opponent so much might help become more familiar with their bowlers?
Sure mate, OKHowever you look at it there is no shying from the fact NZ play weak opponents often, not there fault they don't get a fair shake but its fact.. even the away record against the big 3 are shockingly bad for Williamson.
in England - Average of 30.53
in Australia - Average of 42.85
in India - Average of 33.53
Williamson is a GOAT minnow basher.

Look at our domestic cricket - unless it’s a road they don’t make runsAnd thats where T20 cricket has revolutionsed test cricket , to the haters or lovers of some or people who dont have the patience for it.
Scoring and surviving a day used to be the norm. These days scoring at 4-6 runs per over in a days play is the new motto mindset of test batters that have started or grew up in T20 cricket.
Whats a decent set of shield runs in a season to knock on the door of selection to the Australian team?Look at our domestic cricket - unless it’s a road they don’t make runs
Plenty of blokes made back to back seasons of 900+ and never got a look in.Whats a decent set of shield runs in a season to knock on the door of selection to the Australian team?
Current season (im assuming that includes todays matches):

If I stand to be corrected in the past, you needed a good solid 900 to 1000 runs or more to be knocking on the door. Not sure if its me but those numbers seem a lot lower by inspection.
6 of these against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and South Africa's C side at home. Really knows how to fill his boots against the pop gun attacks, got to give him that.Damn, Williamson churning out hundreds for fun lately - that's 7 now from his last 12 innings.

Nice of SA to gift the Black Caps their t20 rejects so the Kiwis could get that monkey off their back

Well he certainly dined out in this asterisk series. He bullied South Africa's third XI very expertly. However you look at it there is no shying from the fact NZ play weak opponents often, not there fault they don't get a fair shake but its fact.. even the away record against the big 3 are shockingly bad for Williamson.

Agree but Maharaj is not the worst of all time.NZ after their "historic" series victory over SA....surely means they go into the Aust v NZ series very very warm favourites....TBH SA were only missing Rabada, Nortje, Jansen and Coetzee from their bowling attack.....
That's an understatement, none of their bowlers for instance would get a game in their full strength team. They had 8 test debutants in the first test in this series.NZ win by 7 wickets and we have finally won a test series against SA, a bit hollow though as it wasn't against their full strength team.
We will have a much tougher test against Australia in a couple of weeks time.
I guess you you compared this trio for instance to the likes of Lillee, there is no fair comparison regarding the respective batsmen they bowled to. Lillee bowled to much better Pakistani line-ups too. The other factor worth considering is that in past times bats put more value on their wicket. There was no such thing as T20 and techniques were often better.Well if we're putting an asterisk next to player records better add
Starc
Cummins
Hazlewood
At least we can see when KW has been given these easy runs. Still to be determined how many wickets of theirs need a question mark.

Smith doesn't get to bat against the Aussie bowlers and also gets to bat on the flattest tracks in the world in Aussie. Ball rarely swings or seams like it does in NZ
