the thing that i don't think that's been discussed in this thread is that shortly after the sale of foxtel to dazn goes thru, it's likely that the sale of dazn to the pif will go through as dazn itself is in a mountain of debt

not sure a privately owned sports streaming company owned by the saudis cares about advertising; they're not beholden to shareholders

also the talk of afl as the #1 sport is interesting; the numbers posted up thread seem to say that test cricket is just as big a ratings juggernaut in sport in oztraya

The season goes much longer and there's more content tho.

It does show how important the northern markets are to develop though, as the AFL is matching cricket with only ~60% of its audience.

Cricket is as important IMO, for Kayo it fills the summer gap in the footy season nicely and keeps the tier 1 content stream flowing.

Also can't forget the impact on NFL, very popular in Australia now and will be interesting to see if it's still available for streaming on the platform after the deal goes through given DAZN operates the wildly overpriced gamepass in Australia.

I think it shows the importance of the afl really capturing the northern markets over time, but also the importance of at least attempting to capture the Indian Australian community. There are now 370k people of Indian descent in Melbourne.

I was surprised to see the Victorian government are promoting the domestic Indian sport of kabadi in Melbourne, which is good, yet in that deal they didn't ask the Indian government to promote the Victorian invented sport of Australian football, into India. A missed opportunity.

Because all politicians no matter what side they are stupid plus the AFL couldn’t organise a root in a brothel and only way the Indian community of Melbourne and Indian Government would be interested is if you had Kolli and Tendulkar in AFL jumpers promoting the game.
Mind my club has a bloke called Ponting as a supporter but that means nothing and we all know Indians like him.

Well yeah politicians can be stupid and biased to certain sports, which we've seen a lot of lately and I agree the current combination of Dillon and Goyder is pathetic and unambitous, but the afl need to get proactive.

They have a great sport to be proud of, that when an opportunity arises like this, they should be doing everything to obtain the free dollars to push their product. Not even so much as to expand into India itself, but at least to catch the eye of local Indians. They could even have something like a combine there, like they did in the U.S. I also agree on using a guy like Ponting, him and Langer who is now an eagles board member are the two that come to mind, along with using some Indian cricketers. It would be no expense to the afl anyway, as I'm sure the Indian kabadi association didn't pay for all the past AFL players to compete last night.
