Justin Longmuir would be in trouble with a poor start by Fremantle next year. After finals in 2022 followed by a bad season in 2023, this year's bizarre late season fade-out to again miss the finals (although there were warning signs during the year), should the Dockers start the year 1-6 and be out of finals action by the end of April this could be the end of his tenure.

I was thinking - what would it take for the current coaches to lose their positions at their respective clubs from now up to the end of the 2025 season?
Adelaide Crows - Matthew Nicks - Missing the finals again in 2025 after being expected to make the Top 8 in 2024.
Brisbane Lions - Chris Fagan - Poor 2024 finals campaign followed by a big slide down the ladder, but likely safe.
Carlton - Michael Voss - A fall down the ladder to miss the finals in 2025.
Collingwood - Craig McRae - Again likely safe, but if the Magpies fall right away in 2025 following their poor 2024, possibly.
Essendon - Brad Scott - Missing the finals yet again, especially if caused by a poor start of poor finish to the season.
Fremantle - Justin Longmuir - Further inconsistency leading to yet another finals miss, or falling away altogether.
Geelong - Chris Scott - Straight sets finals exit by the Cats in 2024 followed by the aging team falling off the cliff in 2025.
Gold Coast - Damien Hardwick - The Suns not making their finals debut in their 15th season but only if the players don't seem bothered by this or the side slips back to the bottom section of the ladder again.
GWS - Adam Kingsley - Appears safe, only possibility might be not impressing in this year's finals followed by a massive fall for no obvious reason next year.
Hawthorn - Sam Mitchell - Another coach likely safe. Even if the Hawks slipped back in 2025, the question marks wouldn't come up unless the same thing happened in 2026.
Melbourne - Simon Goodwin - The Demons continuing to spiral as they did in 2024.
North Melbourne - Alistair Clarkson - The Kangaroos have the youngest list, but if the heavy defeats and poor performances by the team continue questions will be seriously asked whether these young players are good enough, if they are coming together as a team and whether Alistair Clarkson is the right fit as North's coach.
Port Adelaide - Ken Hinkley - An inglorious finals exit followed by missing the finals in 2025, much like 2021-2022.
Richmond - Adam Yze - Tiger coaches have been given their marching orders pretty fast in the past. They are rebuilding, but if Richmond show no improvement in 2025 or get even worse, then one has to wonder what might happen.
St Kilda - Ross Lyon - Perhaps the Saints realizing that the team is an enigmatic mid-ladder team at best, using a long- outdated game plan and going nowhere? Other than this, an unexpectedly heavy defeat like Melbourne's 186-point loss to Geelong in 2011?
Sydney Swans - John Longmire - Yet another poor GF showing followed up by a slump in 2025, but then it would more likely be a succession plan.
West Coast Eagles - Not appointed but likely Jarrad Schofield - It would be a rare case of it being obvious early that a coaching appointment isn't working out for a change to be made to a first year coach of a rebuilding team.
Western Bulldogs - Luke Beveridge - More inconsistency in 2025 leading to a slide down the ladder.

Since 2000 Danny Frawley 5 years, Terry Wallace 5 years, Hardwick 14 years

I was thinking back to the 1980s and 1990s, you make a valid point about Richmond coaches since then. Although under all three of Frawley, Wallace and Hardwick the Tigers showed promising signs earlier in their tenures so obviously they weren't going to be dismissed quickly it was only later with Frawley and Wallace that the sides began to deteriorate.
For what it's worth if I was a Tigers supporter I would be more optimistic about the future than I would be if I supported the Kangaroos. Richmond did cop a lot of injuries this year which didn't help their cause and while there were some heavy defeats you could see that the Tigers were at least trying. In some North Melbourne games the lack of effort was astounding, and the way the margin in so many of these games quickly spiraled out of control was deeply concerning, especially given this has been going on for five years now under several different coaches with few if any signs of improvement.
With coaches though, it can often be a case of what could have been. Imagine if in 2011 Chris Scott had missed out on the Geelong senior job to Peter Sumich (who immediately coached the Cats to the premiership that year and was still at the club now having won again in 2022) and then applied for and won the vacant Melbourne coaching position for 2012, following the dismissal of Dean Bailey and the Demons falling apart in the later weeks of 2011. Chris Scott may well have become the coach that Mark Neeld was to be.

Nah, if Scott leaves it's because he wants to, he's already achieved more then most thought he would this year.

Scott is only 48 with 14 years' senior coaching experience and a solid track record. The world is his oyster. I am rapt he stuck with Geelong for as long as he did, with one year of a contract to go.

I think people place far too much stock in Goodwin being a reason players may want out. My understanding is the players love him.
But if we have another bad year next season then I suspect Goodwin will be looked at. Especially with a new president likely coming in.

I've heard too that Petracca staying could be conditional on someone no longer being there, but not sure who that someone is. It won't be the boot studder or orange boy!

- Makes the eight, he'll keep his job for sure with our complacent board, even if we don't win a final
- Just misses the eight, he would likely be sacked at season's end, but not guaranteed with our complacent board
- Misses finals by a wide margin, he'll likely be sacked mid-season if our win-loss record is terrible
I think he should not have received an extension early this year and should have been sacked mid-season, but I'm not in charge.

I highly doubt it, so close to the trade saga would make it too obvious Petracca had knifed him and make Petracca the biggest bad guy in the league. It would be a terrible look for his all important brand.
More like Petracca has been guaranteed Goodwin will be gone next year if they don't make at least a prelim
