Even Gary Ablett Snr, if we want to talk about power machines as Diesel Williams put it.

Ablett Snr had strong legs and was not weak through the hips apart from being quick. Ablett Jnr was a bit of a chip of the old block. Ablett Snr was added by the rounded back in terms of balance and centre of gravity.

The point is neither had massive built up shoulders, they where not feathers but there where not Pumping Iron Arnold Classics either

Look at Abletts thighs, calves to, clearly stronger in the legs, shorter than Hopper to

Ablett was 182cm, 87 kg. Have a look at his wikipedia picture.

His power and strength comes from his lower body, never had foot issues. So the lower body as naturally strong in the trunk

We don’t agree on this or Hopper
👍

I don’t think it affects players at all. They know the difference of fans and the negative fools who love criticizing and complaining about nearly everything and targeting their hate on one particular player then looking within themselves. Then you get those who thinks it’s fun to join on the negativity bandwagon.

Think most players know there are these kind of fans in every club. Unfortunately seems Richmond has quite a lot of them. Or it’s just a BigFooty thing.

Don’t think Castagna lost any sleep over this.
The bloke lost his love for playing footy at 26 years old and you don't think, copping constant criticism about his performances, often from Richmond supporters, even when playing well had anything to do with it.

Nah this has Jayden Short written all over it imo
Sadly you're both right. Already seen people questioning why we're playing Cotchin ahead of kids and you just know a quiet spell from Jack will have the vultures circling

Did you rate Rene Kink???

He never won a premiership

I am just saying size is not everything and it can be counter productive if excessive
yes he did just not at AFL level

also i think he played in 5 grand finals which kinda goes against your argument

Not in my eyes because super coach at the times Hafey was known as a fitness freak

In fact when I google Rene Kink and Hafey I get a Collingwood article saying Rene struggled to get in the senior team until Hafey came along in 1977. I was young when Rene was going around but it says he was quick to despite his size. It suggests inconsistency was one of his bigger problems

Another example which is interesting is Peter Wilson who played for RFC and then West Coast and won premierships at West Coast.

Peter was 183cm and 88kg. To me Peter was a little bulky but it is about production and not aesthetics. We are here to win premierships. The difference between Peter and Hopper is Hopper is in a different era and Hopper is a midfielder whereas Peter played a more defined forward role. Peter had a strong upper body and its a bit like Rance and Dunstall commenting about Rance's rack, Rance is/was a fullback so the body requirements where different for the role at hand. Coverage and mobility is more important in the midfield role Hopper plays whereas for Peter as a forward type positioning and contesting strength was more relevant at that time in that team

i always think the whipping boy thread is gonna be a piss take bit of fun but then end up dipping out when people start harshly bagging on our own players lmao

Sadly I guess it affects the subconscious in a way. But if players read footy forums and take them to heart then there won’t be hardly anyone left to play.

Did supporters verbally attack him on game days or privately?

When something serious happens it’s all about mental welfare, no tolerance to bullying. But before that it’s all out the window here on BigFooty.

Looks my favorite player Short is next, won’t matter what he’ll do - the knives are out.

And if Martin has another average year the doom and gloom society will remove his immunity legend status and throw their darts at him.

Sometimes I wish we could trade supporters like we trade players…

“Sorry son we gonna have to let you go… you are not giving constructive criticism just negative verbal mongering which is affecting the whole group. Take som anger management courses and hopefully you will be picked up by some team in the draft…”

There is a difference between showing frustration on game day and potting blokes during the off season and we've all been guilty of potting blokes over and above getting frustrated by a poor game or because they were selected after what seemed like a run of poor form, because apparently we all know (myself included) better than the coaches and match committee.

In Jason's case the negativity surrounding him has been constant for nearly two years and I have no doubt that it has contributed to the decision to walk away early.

Now we've got this thread wanting to label the next target for supporters to blame for our failures. As I said earlier Short Cotchin and Jack will all be in line for some whipping boy treatment should the season not go as we hope, with Jack and Cotchin likely to cop it much like how Edwards started to cop it as he played out his final season and was deservedly rewarded with 300 games for his contribution to not only 3 flags, but also towards helping change the on and off field culture around the club.

I actually did not mind Castagna because he was a great barometer for culture, effort and putting in. No doubt he was a valuable contributor in the premierships we won.

It would be harder for George to keep it up as he gets older the way he played, I can only wish him all the best. I refrained from bagging George because he gave great effort and gave it a real crack. These days I think we have a lot greater depth and skill coming through with the youngsters which makes it harder for him going forward as well. George was tough, had a great leap, and was real quick, not the best kick at times but he made a positive difference in the games he played. He was also consistent with effort including defensively. Castagna was a bit like the push up king, providing great effort and Castagna earned those premierships

I did not see his retirement coming, I must say, but I can only respect the way he carried himself at Tigerland. If I run into him I will shout him a beer for sure!!

We can never be dud free. Some players will just draw angst from a portion of the supporter base. We posters here will see a player we believe is hindering our performances and call them out. If enough posters agree, then guess what, we have another whipping boy! Rightly or wrongly this is what happens. It adds to the discussion. Accept it, there will alway be a whipping boy.

There's no new whipping boy. All the supporters wanted was Aarts and Castagna gone because they were selfish players.
Rubbish. Aarts was no good and Castagna had fallen away because of poor skills. Posters are already choosing players they feel are not good enough. I’ve seen Short, HRS and others mentioned. I don’t fully understand why people get upset when a player is vilified. There would be nothing to talk about if this did not happen. It would be a very boring site if we all, just as some say “support all our players”. We’d be just blowing wind up each other’s arses.
