It's not irrelevant. He lost us many games because he wouldn't hand the ball off to someone in a better position.
Contrast that with Jack Riewoldt and Dustin who always hand it off.
It was like he was always trying to prove that he was a competant goal kicker and that he thought that one day it would all click and he would become one.
He never acknowleged his limitations. His job was to use his speed to tackle , to go for a run with his pace and then to give the ball to someone else to kick the goal.
If he had of been less selfish, and understood his limitations, he would have been remembered more fondly.

If a player like him wasn’t doing exactly as in instructed then he wouldn’t get a game . Can you not get that concept? It’s the Dusty’s and Jacks that can get away with things . Unless you are putting Jason C in that category? Maybe he was that important. You might be on to something.

If he was so good how come no other club would be interested in recruiting him?

Grimes could go downhill very quickly. The fact that there is so many first 22 players mentioned here is a bit of a worry as to where we are at.

Love him for everything he has done and been for this footy club...

But times up.

Nope, it's not what he does if/when he gets it, it's now what he does (or isn't doing) when he doesn't have it.

As I said in other threads, I called this last year, not after one practice game.

I still love him and what he's done for the club!

Ryan is ahead of Soldo, easily, both with current output and potential upside.
He also seems a better natural fwd than Miller...

And JR looks cooked already... So maybe he just replaces JR in the line up?

I said this last year, I can see JR falling off a cliff form wise. He's losing/lost his agility and athleticism that was always his strength, and he gets beat in 1-1 all the time, out and out strength has never been his game.

I would be keeping Ryan in the side, allows Cumberland to stay F50 and Ryan can then take the ruck if needed. Then the choice become between Miller and a small fwd/mid .

It's got to a point with Jack that no matter what goals he kicks, being a liability for the remainder of the game is now having more and impact than his goal kicking is a threat

hahaha thanks rfcta.

But just because I recognise the fact that one of our legends is getting towards the end of his career, and I can have a normal discussion around it, doesn't mean he's become a "whipping boy"

You didn't highlight the lines where I say I still love him either did ya!

Do you have to dislike a 'whipping boy'?

We are an old side, however, I would not right any of JR, Cotchin, Grimes etc off until there is clear evidence that they’re no longer up to it. They deserve to be judged within the season proper not on preseason trial games. Everyone needs to calm down and not shit themselves after a bad loss in a preseason game. If their form doesn’t stand up in the real games then address it. They deserve to be given respect and opportunity to show they can still impact. If they fail we retire them and play youth. Let the season unfold before panicking.

Is it too early to put forward Ryan Mansell?

Yes, and his name is Rhyan. :thumbsu:

'Whipping boys' were traditionally players who struggled to put their heart into their footy and give themselves to the cause. Players who might have deserved their criticism a little and maybe even admitted as much themselves.

If the only blokes on our list people can find to include in a disgraceful thread like this these days are the likes of Nige busting a gut as a raw junior playing an unfamiliar role, then all I can say is that it speaks extremely well of the club and its recruiting policy.
