Banyule keeping lid on NFNL Division 1 expectations after busy off-season

Banyule was one of the most active clubs in local footy this off-season but the Bears remain realistic about their chances in NFNL Division 1.

Banyule is keeping a lid on expectations as it enters its second season in NFNL Division 1.
The Bears were one of the most active recruiters in metropolitan football this off-season, bringing in a range of quality additions.

However, the club is realistic about its position in the top flight after winning five games and finishing eighth last year.

It’s been a meteoric rise for Banyule, which only joined the Northern league in 2015.

Bears co-coach Ricky Dyson said the club needed plenty of improvement to challenge for finals.

“We were happy to consolidate and learnt a lot from our first season in Division 1 but we won five games and finished third last,” Dyson said.

“The work we need to do to be in games for longer and challenge the bigger teams, the gap is quite big, so we’ve got to improve a hell of a lot.

“We don’t want to put a ceiling on what our expectations are.

“We’re going to go out to win every week but we are realistic and it’s our second season in Division 1.

“We have some younger players that learnt a lot and are bigger and stronger and we’ve added guys that will help us compete, so let’s just say we’re going out to win every game.”

Ex-AFL defender Sam McLarty is one track for Round 1 after missing all of 2023 with a shoulder injury, while Werribee VFL ruckman Darcy Bennett has named Banyule as his local club.

Star ruckman Tim Martin returns after a year at Woodend-Hesket and Coburg VFL-listed forward Daniel Owen has jumped across after winning a premiership with Eltham last season.

Lewin Davis (Eaglehawk), Oscar White (South Bendigo) and Seb Francis-Perkins (Old Eltham) have also signed on.

The Bears have secured reigning Bendigo league Michelson Medallist Noah Wheeler but don’t expect to see him until the second half of the year as he recovers from a knee injury.

Meanwhile, Viv Blackmore-Moore (Collingwood) and Riley Loton (Essendon) will be full-time this season after stepping away from VFL.

“We’ve looked to complement the group, we felt we had areas that we were happy with but wanted to add some depth in areas as well,” Dyson said of the club’s recruiting.

“All the players we’ve recruited have been recommended by people we know or through players currently at the club, I think that’s an important part.

“Even with that you need to sell the club so they want to come and be part of it.”

Premiership players Michael Edwards (Darley), James Kayrooz (Maribyrnong Park), Nick Mayne (Elmore), Xavier Mitchell (Cohuna Kangas) and Michael Italia (Heidelberg West) have departed.

While the club went down by eight points, Dyson was pleased with the players performance in the first match against opposition.

Banyule will take on Goulburn Valley club Benalla and EDFL club Airport West before a Round 1 clash against Macleod at Beverley Road on April 13.

“It was a really strong hitout against quality opposition, both Pascoe Vale’s sides finished high in the Essendon District Premier Division last season,” Dyson said.

“We wanted practice matches that are going to test our playing group and allow us to learn a bit about ourselves and learn from other teams.”

The Bears kicked off practice match season with a hitout against Essendon District power Pascoe Vale.

Heidelberg juniors not going to get much of a go.

Macleod lucky to win a game this year. They can hang their hat on winning 1 of 4 grandfinals even though they were probs the best side in it for 3 of them. Sad thing is the guys that made them good are also probably the reason why they didnt win more flags and have fallen away so poorly. Always wanting more money from the club they "love" and committee thinking they can tell coaches who should play seniors or not, based on history, or reputation is a bad mix and makes people younger players not want to be there. and once those "senior" players leave, the club is left picking up the pieces. Would've been fun for them while it lasted though.

Is that why they have Stagliano the arse, cause he stood up to the committee/players dad's?

Club did fantastic to play in 4 D1 GFs and walk away with 1. I bet plenty of clubs would happily take that result with the money they were spending.

Agree in regard to winning a game this season, I’ve been a knock of Macleod for sure going into the last two seasons (maybe 3) but having a crack at their past seems a bit much. They no doubt did a stellar job to get to where they did. I hope my club can replicate part of that.

Yulers, continuing to grow in numbers. Some incredibly talented young kids coming through, watch Yodgee go to another level this season.

Macleod have been too busy patting themselves on the back/ stroking there ego for 5 years to realise there junior talent and home grown talent was desperate for opportunities hence they have all left. Meanwhile Neighbours Heidelberg and NH have regrouped to become top 4 strong holds and Banyule have sprinted past them in the relevancy stakes.

Well and truly a Div 2 side now and might need a few years down there to regroup
on and off field.
Heidelberg have 'regrouped'....that's cute. They have been a powerhouse for as long as I can remember.

Out of interest how many home grown juniors would div 1 clubs have playing div 1 senior footy?

I imagine it varies significantly from club to club.

Imagine the committee telling a guy who's had senior AFL coaching experience and two different clubs who he can and cant choose based on them being "macleod poeple" or not. and those "macleod people" are the ones who apparently love the club but every year ask the club for more and more money otherwise they'll leave.
Also im pretty sure he gave them arse coz he had enough of dealing with that bullshit.
Heard this all from someone who is actually a macleod person through and through and was ropable with how the club was run over the last few years

Funny also how you say about the ones that " ARE MACLEOD PEOPLE "ask for more $$$ then take the big $$$ and one in particular made a fool of himself due to his fitness and people inside the said club were questioning why he was actually there.

Funnily enough this year will mark 20 years since their dominance began. 8 Premierships out of 20 is a decent return, with two of those years null and void so more like 8 out of 18. Weren’t much chop between 1991 and 2003. Gilmore back in 2025.

Mont posted a while ago that they were playing Doncaster East at Whitefriars college on Sunday 24th. Not sure if this has changed?

What year did the Money man arrive at the Bergs? Does it coincide?
