NFNL Div 1 discussion 2022

I think you can include Macleod in the relegation race as well.
I don’t think there is any poor sides in division 1, I think the top end teams of Heidelberg, Bundoora and Mont have definitely improved.
100% there are poor teams. The standard of the competition has dropped from the 90s, 00s and early 10s. Doesnt mean they cant be competitive on there day.
I think Heidelberg has the best depth this year easily. Having watched Bundoora, Mont and Greensborough, there bottom 4-5 players aren't great at all.

But come finals anything can happen. Just takes one of your stars to turn it on and they can win you a game.

Anyone who was down at Memorial on Saturday would have come away thinking how much better the league is with these players in it. To watch Townsend on Saturday was fantastic to see the level his game goes to, and the snap by Zaharakis was something else. The points system works and btw having a high concentration of ex AFL players won't guarantee success. Watching Bundy on the weekend, they make dumb decisions with the ball a lot of the time as they ignore players in space to feed the bigger names and their ball movement for the most part is a bit stop-start because of it. The moments when it clicks are fewer but impressive all the same.
While I agree in principal... my prob is that there needs to be some mechanism that protects the integrity of the comp. let’s be honest the salary cap is a rort.. it’s there in name only. Reducing the points system is the perfect way to almost protect clubs from themselves.

Mid-season review

1.Heidelberg 8-1
Players used: 37
Times in best: Smith & Gilmore 6 times
Lead goal kicker: Minogue - 24 4 players have kicked 9 goals
Heidelberg deserve premiership favouritism with there only loss being a 1 point thriller against Montmorency. They have beaten fellow top 5 opponents Bundoora 36, Greensborough 35 and West Preston 66 points.
With their reserves flying as well, they have great depth and see them going deep into finals.

2.Montmorency 7-2
Players used: 33
Time in best: Wale-Buxton - 7
Leading goalkickers: Fitzgerald 25 S Uzelac 13
Mont after a terrific off-season have had a terrific first half of the year. Led by Wale-Buxton who would be one of the favourites for league best and fairest has set them up for a top 3 finish. Best win was beating Heidelberg by 1 point but they have lost to Bundoora and Greensborough by 9 and 13 points.

3. Bundoora 7-2
Players used: 35
Time in best: Collins - 6
Leading goalkickers - Younan 20 Jorgensen 18
The Bulls have set there season up nicely and will be one of the premiership favourites. A disappointing 37 point opening round loss to West Preston and a 36 point loss to Heidelberg being their 2 losses so far. Look for continued improvement from the bulls but picking there best side cone finals time will be interesting as they are playing most weeks with full compliment of 46 points.

4. Greensborough 4-4-1
Players used: 30
Time in best: Johnston - 6
Leading goalkickers: Z McCubbin 17 Bell 14
The Boro have only used 30 players so far and in Saadi Ghazi’s first season have been a little bit inconsistent. Losses to Hurstbridge, 5 points and fellow top 5 contender Nth Heidelberg 15 points will look to be reversed in 2nd half of the year. Best win was over Mont by 13 points.

5. West Preston 4-4-1
Players used: 38
Times in best: Federico - 6
Leading goalkickers: Saad 21 Tilley 16
Like Greensborough, the roosters have been inconsistent in 2022. Injury to Saad certainly hasn’t helped as their reliance on him to kick a winning score was never more evident in their win over Hurstbridge in his first game back when he kicked 8 out of 12. Losses to Whittlesea and Macleod will look to be reversed in 2nd half of the year. Best win was round 1 over Bundoora by 37 points.

6. Nth Heidelberg 4-5
Players used: 34
Time in best: Tardio - 9
Leading goalkickers: Hogan 24 Crosbie 16
The doggies after being on the bottom of the ladder after round 6 have won their last 3 games to bounce back into finals contention. Led by Tardio who is having a great season they recorded their best win beating fellow top 5 contender Greensborough by 25 points. Depth could be an issue with doggies reserves struggling but with their best 22 on the park they are a dangerous outfit.

7. Macleod 3-6
Players used: 40
Time in best: White & Manuel - 5
Leading goalkickers: Joyce 16 Brandt 12
They kangaroos have had a mixed first half of the season. Injuries have played there part and losses to both Whittlesea and Northcote Park have hurt them. Best win was beating Nth Heidelberg by 40 points. Still in that relegation battle and finals seem out of reach in 2022

8. Whittlesea 3-6
Players used: 41 (most in division 1)
Time in best: Mennan & Dimasi - 6
Leading goalkickers: T Bland 8 Waite & Higgins 7
The eagles have had a difficult season so far but still have 3 wins to their name. Injuries have played a part as has the development of young stars like Watson who has played VFL. 3 close wins overs West Preston, Macleod and Northcote park have been highlights. Lowlights for the eagles have been significant defeats to Mont 157 points and Heidelberg by 142 points which has hurt their percentage. Tge sacking of Blair Harvey came as a shock to NFNL followers but they did respond in beating Northcote Park on the weekend. Relegation still a possibility.

9. Hurstbridge 2-7
Players used:30 (least in division 1 with Greensborough)
Time in best: East & Franks - 6
Leading goalkickers: Naylor 18 Perrin 14
Hurstbridge started the year of great being 2-1 after 3 rounds but 6 consecutive losses finds them in 9th place only % of relegation. They have had a reasonably settled line up using only 30 players so far and not sure where improvement will come from. Best win was in defeating Greensborough by 5 points and backed it up beating Whittlesea on Anzac Day by 24 points. Losing to Northcote Park and Macleod has put Hurstbridge on the relegation zone.

10. Northcote Park 2-7
Players used: 34
Time in best: M Perry - 6
Leading goalkickers: Boyse 19 M Amad 9
The cougars have floated between 9th and 10th for most of the season with their wins being over fellow relegation sides Macleod and Hurstbridge by 4 and 13 points respectively. Boyse up forward has been a shining light for the cougars so far in 2022. Their losses haven’t been as heavy against league heavyweights Heidelberg 63 and Montmorency 78 points. Depth could be an issue as their reserves have struggled at times during the season.

Overall there are 3 locks for finals: Heidelberg Montmorency and Bundoora

3 teams for 4th and 5th position: Greensborough, West Preston and Nth Heidelberg

4 teams in relegation battle: Macleod, Whittlesea, Hurstbridge and Northcote Park.

Premiership favourite: Heidelberg
Relegation: Northcote Park
League B&F: Liam Wale-Buxton or Jesse Tardio.

Enjoy the long weekend

Thanks for the write up great work.

I know everyone is concerned about Bundoora’s weekly points, but were Heidelberg at 45 of 46 on the weekend without Bellchambers and Sier?

As a Heidelberg supporter it is somewhat concerning yes but I have no doubt they know what they’re doing. Also I think you’ll find Luke Bunker was only playing a couple of games, not finals.

I don't really get the concern, you can have 46 points. What is the problem? It's up to clubs to manage so long as they don't go over I guess.

Are you able to play for another league if you are suspended in a different league ?
The same thing has happened at Heidelberg with Wallace receiving 2 weeks last week against WP
He was scheduled to for Collingwood with Heidelberg having a bye
but he can’t play for Collingwood and will have to serve two matches for Heidelberg
so he gets 3 weeks

Round 10 starts tomorrow

Macleod 7th 3-6 vs North Heidelberg 6th 4-5
Massive game for both clubs, to have any chance of finals Macleod have to win. For the doggies they need to reverse there round 1 loss. Brent Harvey back and with that I will go with North Heidelberg by 19 points

Good game of footy at De Winton Park.

Doggies had no match in the ruck with Patty Flynn doing as he pleased. I thought North probably tried to be to cute on a small ground and should have taken ground instead of chipping around at stages.

Unfortunately dogs were undersized up forward and struggled in the air all day. If they had a tall foward target it probably would have been the difference as they had plenty of the play.

Macleod did well to hold on so props to them. Doggies certainly looked to be coming but couldn’t get that final goal.

Good day overall, good crowd.

Daw and McSwain playing 2’s?

Nth have had an undersized forward line for ten years lol.
They have a ruck, but he doesn't train so plays reserves.
Lost the game when Tardio was carded. Macleod got on top then.
