NFNL Div 1 discussion 2022

latemail totally agree and that’s what I have been saying. Fantastic for Hurstbridge to stay up for so long, but is that group of players coming to the end of their careers.
No juniors in 14,15,16 and 17 and the 20th ranked under 19’s (out of 21 teams) means they have little to no 1 point players coming through for the next 4-6 years, makes it hard to hang on and stay up in division 1

sounds lie they'll be in divvy 3 in no time with next to no junior teams

kickthething ladder was as follows
7. Montmorency 6-12 79.23%
8. Hurstbridge 5-13 87.52%
9. Whittlesea 5-13 73.37%
10. Eltham 5-13 67.89%

Yes, stiff for Eltham but also disappointing for them not to bounce back up to Division 1 considering the amount of juniors they have had since this time. Can 2022 be the year they finally win that flag in Division 2. Pretty sure Banyule, Diamond Creek and Lower Plenty will have a big show as well
I watched the divvy 2 GF the following year, quite possibly the worst game of Australian rules I have ever seen.

kickthething it was a shocking day, cold wet and windy Preston oval. All 3 games on the day weren’t great due to the conditions which got worse as they day went on.

Skill wise the games wasn’t great but the conditions heavily influenced it and Lower just hung in there all day and won on the siren.

NorthernBastard its a great comp.
Why do you say that when Whittlesea beat Northcote Park in first round?

I think Hurstbridge seem to escape the scrutiny, they haven’t won since round 3. They still might stay up in division 1 but like Northcote Park, have very little to no juniors coming through and an aging list.

I think in the next 5 years, a strong junior base is going to become even more important and from the bottom 4 teams I think Whittlesea are best placed in that regard. Not sure they stay in division 1 for 2022 and if they are relegated will go back and be competitive in division 2

If Northcote Park do go back to division 2, do those players stay? No depth in their reserves either.

It sets up an interesting last 8 weeks and their would be a list of nervous coaches and supports from Macleod, Northcote Park, Whittlesea and Hurstbridge.

At the top end, how good will next week Bundoora vs Heidelberg game be, huge and will be having a look at that for sure.
Sorry, I didn't reply to this previously.

I know the results have seen Whittlesea beat Northcote Park, but I've seen each team twice, and in those games NP have been competitive with top 5 teams, whilst Whittlesea have looked like boys playing against men. I think it will be Hurstbridge or Whittlesea that go down, and will probably go down to the wire.

Whoever comes up from D2 this year will back themselves to stay in D1 long term. Eltham, DC, Banyule and Lower all look well set up from the outside.
HBFlanker as can be seen from my previous posts it’s very difficult to stay up.

I have looked at the above 4 teams like I did with first division clubs

Eltham: Have the #4 and #19 ranked under 19 teams. Having 2 Under 19 teams is a great spot to be in. They have the #10 ranked under 17 side and the #4 ranked under 16 side. From a points perspective they are in a good position. In the past though Eltham have had very good juniors but it hasn’t helped them get out of Division 2 where they have been since 2018

Banyule: Currently have the 10th ranked under 19 side. They have junior teams in YJFL, colts (under 17) and under 16 are currently both in 1st division. Like Eltham they seem reasonably placed with there junior and under 19 teams.

Diamond Creek: Currently have the 7th ranked under 19 side. They have the 7th ranked under 17’s and the #1 ranked under 16 side in the NFNL. So they are well placed with juniors as well

Lower Plenty: Currently have the #14 ranked under 19 side. They have an affiliation with Research juniors. Under 17’s are ranked 5th and under 16’s are ranked 8th so again well placed with juniors.

As a comparison Hurstbridge have the 20th ranked under 19 side (out of 21) and no 17’s, 16’s, 15’s or 14’s.

In saying that though, having good junior programs doesn’t guarantee first division success but it will certainly help whoever goes up as it gives them a better opportunity to recruit as they are playing with low player point numbers due to junior players coming through as 1 point players.

NorthernBastard Northcote Park’s results against top 5 teams have been good however it means nothing really as a loss is a loss, though percentage may play a huge part in who gets relegated this year.

I think depth will play a huge part in the last 7 weeks, who has the better depth definitely has an advantage.

Huge games this week between Hurstbridge and Macleod and North Heidelberg and Northcote Park

No doubt very difficult but as you have outlined here all four clubs are in probably better spots than the bottom 3 in D1 as a whole. In saying that though, completely agree with what you are saying regarding the correlation between juniors and senior success. Its just not really relevant.

All that is relevant for the top end division 2 teams and the bottom end division 1 clubs is their senior teams.

Agree, all that matters is who wins the most games when it comes down to it, but it adds to the intrigue of the season we have.

HBFlanker I would think Whittlesea would definitely be equal or in front of some of the division 2 clubs re juniors
Under 19 - ranked #8
Under 17 - ranked #1
Under 16 - ranked #10

I agree though Nth Heidelberg, Macleod, Northcote Park and Hurstbridge have very little coming through. This impacts as it means they need to recruit which puts pressure on player points and if anyone of those 4 do drop back down to division 2, it will be very hard to bounce straight back up without a solid junior base.

It was a shocking day at Preston, but most other leagues had decent scoring.

Preston is a shocking venue at that time of the year. So many ruined games of football.

Weather didn't help but watching the final kick of the game win the flag was pretty amazing to watch.
That was all, there was an air of inevitability to it…

Majak Daw back to North
“Jason’s (coach Jason Heatley) had a discussion with Majak and it’s sort of been swirling around for a couple of days,” he said.
“Subject to his current injury he may play a few games for us, we thinking four or five at the back end of the year"
Those games lost under a goal this season already may come back to bite the doggies if they just miss out on the 5th spot.

They have:

R12: Northcote home
R13: West away
BYE weekend
R14: Greensy away
R15: Hursty home
R16: Whittlesea away
R17: Mont home
R18: Bundy away

If Majak can play the last 4 then the Mont & Bundy games become super important. If they can knock off Northcote, and beat either West or Greensy along the way then they could be a chance to sneak in (assuming they will take care of Hursty & Whittlesea).

Ah well, hopefully they hold onto him next year. Will be the best ruckman in the league by a country mile.

It’s time to move away from Preston. A game played in one half of the ground, isn’t great viewing.

Where to though? Eltham? Can't think of many suitable options to be honest. Latrobe has no viewing areas and is impacted by the breeze just as much. Epping has been redone and facilities much improved, and obviously has hosted in the past but it's not exactly appealing for spectators to go to once a week for a month.

Ikon Park (Optus Oval). EDFL play at Windy Hill, time to move it to a proper venue with seating
