Heidelberg West coach Dale Mayne discusses club’s recruits and expectations

31 for 31: As Heidelberg West’s finals drought nears 30 years, the club is looking to build long-term success with new recruits and a fresh look in 2024.

New Heidelberg West coach Dale Mayne says the club has been “rejuvenated” over the off-season.
The Hawks lost several key players during summer but have been active recruiters, bringing in several players with top-flight experience.

In a season of unknowns in NFNL Division 3, West’s ability to make a finals challenge adds to the intrigue.

This season marks 30 years since the club played finals, a drought it is determined to break with a shift to a top-five format in 2024.

However, Mayne said he’d been brought in to deliver a long-term plan.

“We’ve lost a bit of experience, a core of players from last season, but we’ve rejuvenated the list.

“We’ve brought in players that can help us long-term, good players that have come for the right reasons.

“We’ve got our partnership with Keon Park but we still have to be careful with points so our objective has been to bring in players that won’t be a short-term fix.

“We haven’t got heaps of stars like Lachie Evans, Brad Moore and Dan Kelly.

“It’s a really good opportunity for others to step up and an opportunity for us to be a more even team, which is something we think is a really good thing for the club moving forward.

“We’ve got small goals we’re ticking off, we’re not looking too big picture at the moment.”

Evans, the reigning Division 3 league best-and-fairest, Kelly, the club best-and-fairest, and club great Moore have departed, along with Alex Williamson and Louis Hill.

In their place, the Hawks have acquired the likes of Jacob Smith, James Condello and Liam Wanders (all Macleod), Patrick Molony (Parkside, VAFA) and Michael Italia (Banyule).

Mayne pointed out Dane Dmitrovic and Ayman O’Dowd as two pre-season standouts.

Mayne said the new faces had lifted the standard at pre-season training and fitted in well.

“The recruits have all been impressive, a lot have come from clubs with high standards and brought that with them,” he said.

“We’ve brought some exciting young players into the club … who have embraced it and enjoyed learning the gameplan.

“We’re trying to have a consistent standard at the club and an enjoyable place to play footy.”

Heidelberg West will play two practice matches in readiness for Round 1 against VAFA club Kew and Division 2 outfit Lower Plenty.

The Hawks will kick of the new season away to newcomers Old Paradians on April 6.

Mayne said the addition of the Raiders and fellow arrival Ivanhoe would make for a better competition and help his team’s consistency.

“It’s a bit of an unknown with two new teams coming in and I respect Epping a lot, they’re the benchmark in my opinion,” Mayne said.

“We’re going to get better because it will be an even competition across each round.

“There’s a bit more continuity whereas in previous seasons you might have had a bye and then a couple of teams that are struggling and bounce into a harder game.

“We have to be durable and come to play every week and results will look after themselves.

“I’m not making an spectacular predictions, we just want to play good, solid football.”

Heidelberg West’s first home game of the season comes in Round 2, a Saturday night match, against Ivanhoe on April 24.

Should be a big crowd at the West H game under lights. Looking forward to being part of the action and testing ourselves against one of the teams picked by many to make the top five 👍

That’s mind boggling no finals for 30 years. Surely would have to be the longest drought in local football.

some good praccys coming up this weekend. We played Therry and Kew last year in Div 4 ammo's - so will be interesting to see how Epping and West H go against them this week.

It's only a praccy, many players won't be playing and team lists can change a bit from season to season, but should be fun to watch.

Ivanhoe coach Wayne Schultz discusses Hoers preparation for NFNL return

A difficult final VAFA season will hold Ivanhoe in good stead for its return to the Northern league, with a star forward set to play a handful of games.

Ivanhoe believes a difficult two-win season last season will hold it in good stead entering the Northern Football Netball League.
The Hoers return to the NFNL for the first time since leaving the preceding Heidelberg District Football League in 1921.

They finished last in VAFA Division 1 last season in what would prove the last of 90 years in the amateur competition.

Ivanhoe will look to rebuild this season in NFNL Division 3.

Coach Wayne Schultz said more wins was high on the priority list this season.

“We only had a couple of wins, so singing the song a few more times will bring more smiles to the place,” Schultz said.

“The best thing about last season when we reflect, I enjoyed the year and the playing group enjoyed the year, we had a lot of fun.

“You certainly learn a lot about people when they’re challenged and challenged at a greater level and we learnt last year we’ve got an incredibly resilient group.

“None of the players shied away from effort and intensity, so I think it puts us in good stead to come into a new competition.

“Going through last year has given us a good launching pad … we feel we can certainly achieve more than two wins.”

The club has made recruiting former juniors a priority this season as it looks to build its list for 2024.

Kane Veliou, Will Drapac (both Heidelberg), Jack Welham, Ant Willison (both Old Ivanhoe) and Jamie Lay (Kew) are junior Hoers, while Ben Ernst (Noble Park) and Sam Aanensen (Lancaster) have also come on board.

“It’s been amazing, our strategy was to have a ping at the stumps with recruiting, re-engaging our past junior players that have been at other clubs and that’s been really successful,” Schultz said.

“Having those players wear the jumper for the first time in a new league is really exciting and those recruits are loving it, which is great to see.

“We’re really excited for Round 1, I’m excited to think there’ll be a number of first-gamers who have come through the juniors.”

Despite playing just nine games, former captain-coach Ash Close led the club – and was ranked eighth in the competition – with 28 goals.

The star key forward is now the boys coach at Coates Talent League power Oakleigh Chargers and will also be on the staff for Vic Metro.

The Hoers hope to still have him for a handful of games this year in between coaching duties.

“We respect his Oakleigh Cannons priorities and he’s got Vic Metro responsibilities as well,” Schultz said.

“We should see Ash quite a few times, we’re anticipating a third of the season, as long as his body is right.

“I’m big on balance, so if he feels his needs a weekend off football because he’s going hard at Oakleigh and Metro, we’re transparent about that.

“He’s such an important player when we have him, he’s kicked quite a few goals in the games he has played in the last two seasons.”

There’s a sense of excitement and adventure around Ivanhoe Park as the club prepares for a new season in a new competition.

Schultz said a number of incumbent players were the ones leading the way.

“Marcel Moran has been fantastic on the track, he’ll give us a lot of run-and-carry, he uses the ball really well,” he said.

“We hope he has an injury-free year and continues on the good work he did last season, with a full year he was one of two players that probably would have walked into our best-and-fairest.

“Michael Doyle will give us plenty down back, he continues to live up to his high standards and he’s in a good space with his fitness.

“Another one who needs a pump up, he’s come back to the club and I’m really looking forward to what Jack Welham can do for us.

“Kane (Veliou), we’re rapt to have his expertise, Heidelberg is an incredible program.

“To have Kane come back, a Div 1 footballer, he brings a calmness and leadership to our group and we’re excited to see how his season plays out.”

Ivanhoe’s return season begins on April 6 with a trip to Crispe Park to face Reservoir, with both sides eyeing a invaluable win.

Good work coach - looking forward to the season and being part of the NFNL. No doubt this years Div 3 quality will be a HUGE test for our club, but it's really exciting to be a part of. This is the start of 'rebuilding' the club and being relevant again within the Northern suburbs and the competition we compete in - and a few frothies with mates!! :)

How’d you go today.

Lalor seniors got a win over East Sunbury and the 2s got close with a depleted bench. Better signs than last practice match but still need to improve
