Funny thing..

Just reading these new rules for 2023, it doesnt mention the previous 2022 rule that “Father sons cant play for the crows or port if they have already played league for another SANFL club” rule anymore..

It just says “father sons can opt to play for crows or port through the new rookie program without their current SANFL clubs permission”..

Maybe its changed and it doesnt matter if tyler plays league this year?..

These rules?

In 2023, Adelaide and Port Adelaide can each select one 19 or 20-year-old player as part of the SANFL Rookie Program, with the player having the autonomy to opt into the program once the SANFL club has been consulted in the first instance.

Doesn't help re. Tyler as he's 18 next year? Plus does being in rookie program mean playing in our SANFL side? Things could change by next year, I guess, but wouldn't hold my breath on it.

That would be Taylor Goad who was new to me, played ruck and up forward. Looks quite quick and agile but would need to see more to suss him out.

Guess what one is him? ;)

Ha ha - yes I heard 207cm but you know how cm’s are added every time the story is told!!

But yes I understand he’s relatively new to the game so will be a slow burn most likely

I will be taking notice of Tyler, but what’s everyone’s thoughts on where he ends up playing his footy? He’s obviously been a forward due to his size, but is he going to keep growing? He will remain a forward or is there something else about his game that could see him elsewhere?

Late last year i wrote a short piece on Tyler and Jack M and the challenges they both faced in this very important bottom aged year.

Jack was about attitude more than anything and he seems ok in that area just at the moment.

Tyler was different again - bit of a man child that bullied the U16. Would he grow to key position size and if not could he adapt his game. Max M was a key defender in juniors but didn’t really grow - he adapted.

At the moment it’s a bit soon to tell. We need to see a bit more on how his bottom aged year plays out.

These boys are just U17. Lots to play out. As an U17 Max didn’t even make the SANFL talent hub.

Could Tyler be that big bodied mid that we need?

His Dad is "only" 188cm so (unless his Mum is a bit of a giantess), Tyler probably wont get over 200cm. It sounds like he's been playing as a forward/mid, so ending up as a mid/forward might be a possibility?

Speaking of needing big bodied mids, has anyone from the club ever said we need a big bodied mid specifically? Or is that mainly a Bigfooty view of things?

Tyler has played exclusively as a forward who pinch hits in the ruck.

Anyone know what's happened with Mitch Stevens, Mark Stevens son? Was touted a couple of years ago as a prospect alongside Tyler.

This him? Only U13s?

Hes only 190cm..

Needs to grow a fair bit more to get over 200!..

If hes an early bloomer he might have already done all the growing height wise that he’s gonna.

Needs to push into the midfield this year.. see what he can bring..

Either that or, as a 190cm player, he’s not gonna be a KPF for us.. more a Mcadam/gollant medium forward “plays tall” type replacement..

Who says he doesn't grow 2-3cm from when he was measured as a 15 year old, and even then from 16-19 could still grow another 1-2cm after that.
You'd have to say there's a good chance he ends up 193+ which is KPF size.

Or he becomes our “patrick cripps” 195cm big bodied mid!…

Hard to believe Cripps is taller than tex and is a fulltime midfielder..

So… What if Tyler doesnt grow past 190cm?… plenty of lads do all their growing height wise before 16 and dont grow anymore..

His dad isnt a 195-200cms.. he’s only 188cm..

Anyone know his mums height?..

Edit: dont worry.. he’s already way taller than his mum!..

Tyler still has plenty of time yet to grow. Fogarty was listed as 191.9cm in his draft year and still managed to grow an extra 2cm to 194cm despite being burlier than most afl players at 17.
Sam Darcy is a another example of growing late into teens:

Since joining the Dogs in November last year, the teenager has grown an astounding 5.5 centimetres, bringing him to 209.5 centimetres, which makes the now 19-year-old. The young pup who won’t stop growing: The rise of Bulldogs big man Sam Darcy

He'll be big enough if he gets to the 193-194cm mark - We would then have a 200cm Thilthorpe roaming at CHF with Fogarty at FF and Welsh from a pocket - some serious power there

If you're relying on draftees to rebuild - especially those we don't have yet - then it's gonna take a while.
If we pickup that great midfield prospect this season they could be ready to make that difference in 3-4 years.
If we recruit well over that time we could progressively improve still.
We are poor because most of our best prospects have played less than 50 games.

Ie bringing in the likes of Day, Redman, Wanganeen-Milera, Phillipou, Cox, Welsh and a top midfield prospect this year.

2023
Pick 1 - Reid
Free agent - Redman
Trade 2024 first to Hawks for Day and future second
GC second to Saints for NWM

2024
Pick (1-10) F/S - Tyler Welsh
Trade 2025 first to Saints for Phillipou
Free agent - Brennan Cox

2025 side

Michalanney ~ Murray ~ Worrell
Redman ~ Cox ~ Doedee
Dawson ~ Laird ~ Day
O'Brien ~ Rachele ~ Soligo
Pedlar ~ Thilthorpe ~ Phillipou
Rankine ~ Fogarty ~ Welsh
Reid ~ Berry ~ Taylor/Nankervis
Wanganeen-Milera

Youre dreaming if you think we are coming last and getting pick 1 for Reid…

Hawks have it already sewn up.

And unless he becomes a dominant gun mid this season.. which will be very difficult playing for the tanking Hawks.. Day isnt worth our first this year or next year.. both will probably top 5 picks..

Day is a good prospect.. but he’s still yet to prove anything and is currently worth a pick in the early teens at best..
