Nicest/Rudest Lions players you've met

Can't ever say any of them have been rude in my experience.

The absolute nicest guys I've come across though are Keating, Merrett, Lappin, Voss, Blacky, Selwood, Drummond, Bradshaw, Leppitsch, Adcock and Stiller. All great guys.

EDIT: Oh and both Scott brothers too, absolute nice guys.

Nicest - Maybe a surprise to a few but Jason Akermanis - was at a function in Perth in 1999 and Jason proactively walked up to me, introduced himself (which obviously he didn't need to) and had a long chat with him - still hold him in high regard, as that was about as genuine as you would get from any AFL player/celebrity - especially of the class of him, although i am still not happy with many of his comments in 2006 and not shutting-up/letting his team-mates/club down prior to and after leaving etc

Beau McDonald & Simon Black are great blokes as well

Two of the nicest would have to be Luke and Vossy. I used to take lots of children to training in Brisbane and they always took the time out to talk to the children, sign autographs and have their photo taken. Absolute gems!! I remember one pre season training many moons ago when Vossy had his arm in a sling (think it was shoulder surgery) and he signed all their autographs with his opposite hand. It blew me away. Bet he's a fantastic father!!

I was at the Pride of Lions function late this year and i was guttered when I was shoo-ed away by Browny. I couldn't believe it, he'd been swarmed all night and needed a break. I came back ten minutes later for an autograph.

On the same night I had a nice chat with Brennan and Joel MacDonald, for which now I respect them a great deal more. Joel in particular kept yapping away and I found it contrastingly different to many of the other players who when you say hey to, they respond, but then rush off on their merry way. For instance Rischitelli said 'Hey sinking a few?!' and before I'd blinked he was gone.

Jamie Charman is also a champ IMO. I sponsored him this season and he seemed genuinely appreciative.

Stiller's also an nice bloke. At a function I asked him about his ankle which he injured early in the season and to my surprise he even pulled up his pants and showed me how swollen his ankle still was as evidence. He was playing through a fair bit of pain.

To name a few :p

I think it's a really dangerous thing to judge a player negatively on one encounter.

If you've gone up to a player at the shops or somewhere similar, it odds on they'll be a little peeved. Also, a few of the boys are quite shy from what I hear.

I don't generally speak to many of the players, but I'd vote for Nige as he said hello back to my 2yo daughter as he was running laps at training one day. Shermo is probably the only player i've had the privilege of talking to for any great period of time. I'd agree with Raav's call on Heuskes.

We could twist this around and swap shoes - ask players "who is the nicest/rudest supporters you've met".

rudest - countless nameless supporters who want their photos taken with them, or who want an autograph, but never ask nicely, and never say thank you.

nicest - daniel of course. hehehe...

This question is one-sided and any person's rudeness might be a reaction.

If a player knows you (even better if by name), he will talk to you or say hello.

Politeness goes a long way. It doesn't hurt if a supporter introduces themself by name first, and then ask nicely for what they want (photo, autograph, a quick chat etc)... oh and at an appropriate moment.

Nicest over the time : Doc Clarke, Piggy Fletcher, Vossy, Charmo, Bushy and Luke and Drummo, Aka and Wood, and Marcus and Harty and Fly.
other clubs : Farmer and pav ,bazza.

yukiest :Sherman and Poss. from other clubs, Modra, Carey and Silvagni.

Nicest in my opinion would be Simon Black. The type of guy you'd like to marry your daughter. Not that I have a daughter but if I ever do her potential husband needs some Black-like qualities. (that's not a racial thing) I'll chuck Leppitsch, Lynchy, Keating, Power and Voss in as close runners up.

No lions player has ever been rude to me, but I've had a couple of "oh no, I've awoken the beast" moments with Grand Master Matthews. I interviewed him once for a story on Des Headland I wrote for the university paper and he had me sweating by the end of it. One of the greatest individuals I've met, but probably also the most daunting. Guess that's more to do with my respect for him than anything else though.

Funny that - ive been impressed with Heuskes on the few occasions ive met him here in Adelaide through the Roosters....... go figure:confused:

Ive met Roey here in Adelaide - Really nice guy, shy too :) Out of other footballers two ex crows in Sean Tasker (lived on the same street as my grandma) and Benny Hart are the nicest guys ive ever met!

Ive had the plesure of meeting Barry Robran too - an utter gentlemen of the game. All Class.

gotta say. i usually get shy around them. how embarrassing lol. but colm begley was great we ended up having a chat i think he'd have to be the nicest of the bunch :):thumbsu:

Sat on a plane next to Chris Scott one day. Said a quick hullo, then left him be, but he wanted to yarn all the way to Melb. He was particularly interested in the boozy footy club reunion I was heading to.

Met Champs a couple of times too - top bloke.

In my job i often meet lions players, i don't expect anything of them because i know they are footballers and like any profession there will be some great people and some duds. The blokes i have met have been pretty good they include

Simon Black- genuinely nice bloke who demonstrates an interest in discussing things non football related

Brad Scott- Nice bloke who just genuinely was appreciative of people who supported him

Michael Voss- Respectful, down to earth and doesn't value what he does above anyone else working in any other job

Hayden Kiel- Good fella with a level head and also obviously intelligent when i have spoken with him

Jason Roe- Big kid

I think everyone should be careful when judging players because people tend to analyse every word and every body movement they make. If a player makes eye contact and speaks to you well then you should be satisfied that they are fulfilling their duties as footballers. If you get more than that then they are going above and beyond. There is nothing wrong with admiring and worshipping players for their onfield exploits but don't make the mistake and admire them as people, unless they deserve it eg. Michael Long

I met Hueskes once at the Transcontinental hotel in the city, I was inebriated to the extreme and Hueskes was in as good a state. We were talking footy with Stefan Carey as well and then it came to me and i said "Don't you fellas have training or something tomorrow" Heuskes responds by saying " You're the first bloke in Brisbane apart from Stefan to know that i am going to retire tomorrow"

Can honestly say I have never had a negative experience with a Lions player, but have had plenty of great ones.

Met Lynchy in the terminal at the Brisbane Airport ofter the 2002 grand final. Wife had her picture with him and the cup.

Simon Black, that same year at the Brownlow Medal Dinner at the GABBA. I was sitting directly behind him, and even with everything that was going on (GF week, winning the Brownlow etc..) he had time for everyone who came up for a chat. Top bloke.

Really, the list of good blokes stretches on and on, Ashcroft, Hart, Brad & Chris Scott, Pikey.

I guess it is part of their job, dealing with us that is. They do it well:thumbsu:

BS he totally snobed me in hobart that time.
Probably because when he gets a chance to come home, which isn't often, he would like to be able to just walk around hassle free!! I know the kid pretty well and would be surprised/disappointed if he showed a poor attitude toward you. Trust me he's generally never be like that, usually very accomodating:thumbsu:

Jared Brennan.

After the Carlton game, he stopped my mates and I and chatted to us for 3-4 minutes about all things footy and what not, seemed really down to earth.

Having said that, from all my past experiences, they all seem to love their profession and the interaction they get, Lukey and Browny are very laid back and funny.

Oh man, how did I forget Sherman!

Should be near the top of my list. Great guy.
Great to hear BrownDog! As i said in previous post know him very well and it pleases me to hear he has his supporters up there. Had a bit of a stop start year for a couple of reasons but did come second in your B&F the previous year. Hope he goes great again for you blokes this year because even though i'm Carlton through and through i keep a keen eye on Brissie games these days and think you guys are heading up again and probably fast:thumbsu:
