Mega Thread Nick Daicos - Can he be the GOAT? Part 2

how was he more dynamic than daicos...
Their superb ball gathering skills and elite running capacity are similar..however…Lil Gaz would consistently take the hits and plough through traffic when required along with an added ability to dish off effective handpasses while getting crunched.

Nicky doesn’t do any of that stuff.

Because he’s soft underneath and in between. Like a custard tart.

Ablett was a very good tackler and even better at breaking tackles.

What are you talking about. At this stage of his career Gaz was still a forward pocket and he didn't get close to Nick's clearance numbers at any stage of his career. Incredible player who could create space and execute like no others, but around stoppage he was always more of a receiver than the first possession player that Nick has already become. Oh and in Nick's first year of full time mid, he had more contested possessions than Gaz ever had in a year.

Ablett in his 3rd/4th season was actually a forward/mid who did a lot of his damaging work when he joined the midfield rotation. Quality over quantity as far as disposals. See his work in the 2004 SF and 2005 EF.

Obviously Daicos had a stronger start than GAJ due to having a tank from day 1, therefore being around the ball more.

On attributes, skill, contested work and decision making I don't think Daicos is ahead of where GAJ was though.

Where Nick is ahead (of everyone) is in how quickly he gets to the ball. His reactions and agility are awesome. It's why he's too good at stoppage to not get a tag, despite not being a beast.

That’s what sets him apart when being compared to true champions.

He’s not a beast. He’s a Brent Stanton receiver seagull player type.

Which is handy to have running around the centre.

But if you get hold of him ..most opposition players can can bring him down easy like a rag doll. And that’s a massive weakness..despite the other strengths.

To me, he’s an Akamanis equivalent, playing on-ball, without the brutal strength to bust away from attacks on the body.

Nicky is like a ballerina. Lightfooted with fancy steps. Soft as a melted Craft single.

The way he plays and his physical profile he may never take one.

I never seen Leo Messi win a contested header, and his the GOAT.

Last night only three mids took a CM, and on Thursday only two mid took a CM. The team that is premiership favourite had one contested mark from the midfield.

I don't think you realise how unimportant contested marks by midfielders are.
Egg, meet face.

I looked up Messi's stats for aerial duels and he wins on average about 0.2 per game. That's coming from a guy who is 5'-7" and can't use his hands against typically much bigger, stronger defenders.

Nick is 6'-0" and can use his hands, yet has never taken a contested mark.

I've said it before and will say it again. Nick Daicos is the single worst player in the competition when the ball is in the air.

Ablett junior had 28 contested marks up to and including his first 4 years of football. Nick had a chance to take one on Friday night but panicked when he realised there was another player involved in the aerial contest - a fellow team mate. Oh well, always next week

Each post is a little more trollish, then you bring out the gem that just takes away that tiny, small, hidden piece of credibility one hoped you had.
I am sure you and your dungeons and dragons friends had a good laugh at that one, at 2am, in mums basement.

Oh well, we'll have to settle for the him being the single best player in the competition when the ball is on the ground or in general play.

Well, unfortunately Cripps is the best at hard ball gets, so that rules out Nick in that department
Steven Kernahan was the best contested mark in the league - but stars who could get and maintain separation were more dangerous.Cripps wouldn't get as many hard ball gets if he got to it as quickly as Nick and could dance his way clear like Nick does.

Cripps is a 195cm clearance beast. There's no comparison.
When Daicos decides to enter a disputed pack situation involving contact to obtain a clearance, then we can start talking about his greatness, but he isn't anywhere near there - yet

With limited games as an inside mid, Nick is already one of the elite first possession winners in the league - you seem to think it's a bad thing that he does it through getting to the ball first. The reality is it's a fantastic thing. Once he physically matures, the sky is the limit.
