It is taken as a given that Jeans ordered O'Dea to take Johnny Greening out of the game at Moorabbin that day. Jimmy should have been banned for life but the Saints instead honour him. I was very young in the year in which this took place and I am interested in those stats of the 6 goals in successive matches etc because that was my hazy memory of him, kicking bags, being everywhere and then that sinking feeling when he went down. Most of my family was at Moorabbin that day but I was not. They said it was sickening watching him being stretchered off with blood near the nose and him being unconscious.

Amen brother Abdul.

Pretty standard picture for when he was playing . . .

On the wing, pack of 5 to contest the mark with 2 waiting at the 12 o'clock position, John 20 meters in the 6 o'clock position . . .

John soars over the pack and completes the mark whilst reading the position of the front and centre's . . .

Slides by the front and centres like they are training witches hats - still accelerating . . .

By they time they have turned and taken a step he's steadied and passed to his upfield team mate - right on the tit . . .

. . . field umpire scratching his head turns to the supporting actors and boundary umpire and asks . . .

Did anyone get the number of that F15 . . .??????

How many best and fairest did he win?

Yeah and Jeans is an honoured coach in footy circles as well . . .

Right… Jonbe talks like he kicked 7 goals per game and outmarked 4 opponents with ease… just strange he never won a BnF after over 100 games.
Greening is a case of what could have been, he was on the cusp of being the biggest name in footy, he probably would have been an all time great and won several best and fairests had the O’Dea incident not occurred.

It’s not really all that surprising that he hadn’t won a B&F before that point. He started playing for Collingwood as a 17 year old, so was a boy among men and would have taken a few years to fill out and become consistent.

No doubt he would’ve had a great career if not injured, just the hyperbole around what he actually achieved in 100 games can get a bit ridiculous. 3rd in a BnF appears to be his greatest achievement in over 5 seasons unless I’m missing something.

Best to just let them purge all of their Greening erotica now in the off season.

Nominations are open for what mispronunciation of Nicks name is read out when announcing his first Norm Smith.

First dibs I have;

And the medal goes to "Nate Dikmos!"

Peter Daicos only won 2 B&F’s in his career and he’s regarded as an all time great. Copeland’s are great, but not the be all or end all yardstick to measure a players worth.

There are some, a few I know intimately, who saw him play who will claim he was the best they ever saw when he played.
One in particular on this board will attest to that.
I never really had the opportunity to form a firm opinion as unfortunately I was too young to fully appreciate what I saw.

I can tell you I knew in my heart that players like Buckley, Swan and Maxwell*, would be something special, all in their own ways. I knew in my guts.
Daicos P was already a great.

After them Pendles and Sidearse were obvious.

Cloke never got there.

What I am saying is you need to respect the opinions of those you respect on these boards and I fully respect the opinion that Greening could was great, and could have been one of the greatest ever, Collingwood players.
Certainly the players of his era have said so.

* Maxwell was always going to be a great Collingwood Captain from the first game he played, I posted as much at the time and he came through in spades.

Had Buckley spent a few years fwd at his career end with good Hammies you would of seen him contend for a Coleman imo.

Kicked 7 on one leg vs Scott, Micheal leppa etc. and it's not even a role he trained for.

Buckley is every bit up there with Gablett and Matthews etc as a players.

People forget just how dominant and good Buckley was as a midfielder and versatility to excel anywhere on field.

He outplayed Carey one day from memory

I can see how posters can be sceptical but if you saw him you would have a different view. The B&F view is moot, his 1st season was partial and 5th season, where probably wins it if not for O'Dea, comes 3rd.

He only had 3 full seasons 69, 70 and 71. Copelands were won in those years by Price, McKenna and Wayne Richardson, there was a lot of competition. He was 3rd in 70 as a 19yo in probably the most talented team I have ever seen at Collingwood. McKenna won 1 B&F in those few years of Greenings career despite having 98, 143, 134 and 130 yearly goal tallies.

Remember he started 2 years younger than Nick Daicos, his 1st full season when 18 he kicked 34 goals and 5 brownlow votes. 18 yos dont get Brownlow votes as a rule. He had games as a young man where he dominated matches like very players ever have. In the video below Barry Price references a game where he tore Carlton apart, the reigning premiers, kicked 7 goals from a flank. Price said he was about 19 or 20 then. He got that wrong, he was 18 and a few months playing his 19th game. Nobody does that.

But seeing him was better than his stats, he was much better than his stats. Even though he was young he was playing at a level and a type of footy that just sat above and just had massive wow factor. Its a pity there was so little recording of his career, at that time very few match or part match recording have been retained. Most matches were not recorded at all. Still in the little bits in the link I have attached i think you get the feel of someone pretty special. Remember there were moments every week with Greening where he made you stand up but most of it you only saw if you were at the ground, no recording exists

Most talented player i have ever seen at Collingwood and very likely would have become our greatest ever except for O'Dea. His career pre O'Dea was 97 games without missing any once he debuted. 61 of those he was a teenager. To make such a mark when the majority of your career is played as a teen is unheard of.

Good read and watch GC I have been privileged to have witnessed John's career as well as a few headliners of note.

I saw both the Richardson boys, Thommo and Macca were the next best I've seen don the stripes.

But John and Peter were the best by a fair margin.

Both could do anything they pleased with the ball but John was an simply outrageous talent with athletic traits that would not be amiss in today's football.

For unbelievable talent, athleticism decades ahead of its time and that jaw dropping leap with sure hands nobody compares.

Many have had some of his attributes but none were the complete package.

None of us that stood in the outer and watched his artistry will ever forget.

Forget B & F’s that’s deserving of a knighthood.

I have no doubt he would have gone on to be our greatest ever player.
Such a tragedy, only rivalled by the loss of Pants.
