Nicky Winmar to take legal action against Newman, Scott and Sheahan

Where me?

Sinking tins at a backpackers in Cairns with a couple of Saints fans and watching Winmar & McAdam shred the Pies

But that doesn't matter.

Don Scott and Mike Sheahan were both there and they were saying they thought Winmar was pointing at his guts & saying "gutsy win"
So they're both wrong. Just not sure that's worth anything for damages, is all I'm saying.

Nicky Winmar would've had a better chance of extracting coin from the Collingwood president, Allan McAlister who said afterwards that people would respect him if behaved himself well like a white person
Let’s not let let the truth get in the way of what a few good ol’ boys felt at the time. Feels is better than reals, bruh.

That’s what most sensible non-senile people would think. We all know it was a stand on racism...

But on what grounds could he be suing them?
Does 3 old fools offering their deluded opinion on something really constitute slander?
Now let’s look at what the article says.

“Reported to be... “ are probably the key words.

and if "..." is inaccurate then what exactly the fuss. Just 3 dinosaurs saying stupid shit then?
Twitter clips of Trump speeches does that daily.

I think this thread is clearly operating on the assumption that 'reported to be' comes to fruition, and if so I ask once more, on what grounds?

A lawyer will find one. They always do.

No it asks the question “what if...”

How mean spirited can 3 blokes get. Even if there was truth in what they are saying, all they are doing is rewriting the story to suit their own narrative. They are attempting to take away any ownership of one of the truly great moments in Indigenous history, and there have been precious few, and white wash it. There is not an indigenous person in Australia who is not proud of that moment and that photo. And now they want to take that away. Well done guys, real big of you.

The Bible had a bit to say about worshipping false idols (a reference to the statue, not Winmar). There is a lot of untruth/selective truth contained within current political narratives. If such discussion serves to shine a light, it can only be a good thing - whatever the truth turns out to be.

So it's an iconic photo, it doesn't mean the story cannot be manipulated.

This is an iconic photo of Jack Dyer, the man who supposedly broke 64 collarbones in his playing career. It's useful to know that it shows Dyer winning a ruck contest and Tom Meehan pivoting to follow the direction of the ball, and not Dyer cutting another hapless opponent down with a fearsome blow.

Same principle applies with the Winmar photo. I don't know the truth of it, but suspect those threatening legal action won't really want it explored.

yep and its been turned into a racist debate and attack on Winmar, an attempt to rewrite history it judt wasn't.

The legend-making began some years later, I'm not sure exactly when. Plenty of St.Kilda supporters have repeated the "guts" claim to me. That doesn't make it true, but maybe this is an attempt to correct history.

It would've gone through to the 'keeper as a forgotten dot ball without certain people making a noise about it.

Daicos was one of the most respected players ever to play the game. I went to plenty of football in that time and don't remember Daicos copping anything other than f***en Daicos has done it again.

Mother's Day Massacre. Daicos had been in the news over serious financial issues, maybe a restaurant gone bad or something, can't remember.

Anyway Collingwood are getting their pants pulled down and the Richmond crowd's in rare festive mood, and the ball goes out of bounds in front of Daicos. Some bloke yells at a hundred decibels, "Hey Daicos, your accountant's on the phone!".

One of those things where you had to be there, maybe, but it brought the house down.

Even if Newman was correct (and he's not), it's a white dude speaking on behalf of an Indigenous man & telling us what he thinks. Shabby.
That’s the entire history of this story in a nutshell.
Winmar made no comment about his actions that day to anyone. He told no club officials, he told no teammates. No one at St Kilda knew it had happened. No one at the ground knew what had happened.
28,000 people were there.
But one white guy later....

How can it be a good thing for aboriginal people to one of their very few iconic symbols or small wins taken away from them. Pride in the colour of your skin should be applauded not questioned.

Remind us which degree you completed?
I'm halfway through a degree with a pretty high entry point (think ATAR in the 90s) and it's nothing to brag about.

All about the $$$ nowadays, some unis are even doing away with ATAR requirements next year. They'll let anyone in in some courses.

It’s ostensibly a good thing, which is why there was no opposition to the statue on principle. Even if it was shown to be based on a false premise, there’s no reason why it has to come down. Maybe a plaque underneath to provide context...
