Nicky Winmar to take legal action against Newman, Scott and Sheahan

They may have thought that on the day. But who gives a fu**?

The guy that actually did it has told us for 30 years why he did it.

So to dispute that is not only the height of arrogance, it's also straight out calling him a liar.
Or it’s just stating what they thought.

Many believe Neil Armstrong didn’t go to the moon, despite Neil saying he did for the rest of his life.

People believe OJ Simpson killed his wife, despite OJ denying it for 30 years, and a court finding him not guilty

Which is straight out calling him a liar.
Is it worth getting upset over?

and is it? Mike Sheehan said “I believed it was about Guts, but only Nicky Winmar knows himself what the gesture was for”

has he called him a liar?

How TF is that something you or me get to decide?
easy, Having seen Sam Newman over the years, nothing’s worth getting upset From what come from his mouth Or his podcast.

Do you not realise by now, that being offended isn't up to you or me?
I can’t choose what people get offended by.

But I can Say it’s not worth getting upset from what comes from Sam Newman or his podcast.

Hope you’re not offended by that.

What ******* planet am I on?

Winmar, was THE ACTUAL GUY THAT DID IT!!!

Yet apparently a guy who was there is just as entitled as THE GUY THAT ACTUALLY DID IT to determine why he did it.

Is this sh*t for real? Am I actually reading this stuff?
Calm down, fella... All I said was that people are entitled to have incorrect recollections about past events they witnessed

I have never actually heard Nicky Winmar speak about the incident. Nor have I ever read any interviews with him or read any direct quotes from him about the incident, apart from the generic "I'm black and I'm proud" line which went into folklore. If you think about it, it's only ever the photo which gets reprinted with some journo waxing lyrical about the racial abuse that Winmar, McAdam & Narkle copped and how Winmar "took a stand". Nicky has been remarkably media shy for most of his life. I wouldn't even know what his voice sounds like.

Now I'm a footy tragic who watched that game and I've devoured nearly everything in the footy media for my entire adult life. So if I've never actually read or heard Winmar's version of events, then what chance has the reclusive Don Scott done so? This is the self-professed curmudgeon who has barely watched a game since he retired as a Channel 7 commentator over 25 years ago.

Surely an old person is entitled to think along the lines of "I always thought he was talking about the Saints' gutsy effort to win. Seemed to me like people built it up after the event" without everyone judging him as having sinister, malicious intentions. Being wrong about something isn't a crime. Maybe he read the Herald Sun's incorrect & misleading headlines the following day and this solidified the error in his mind.

Why are you so mad about this anyway?

Surely Sam can't be that racist given how glowingly he has talked many times over the years about his relationship with Polly Farmer.
Polly never talked about his upbringing in those footy circles from what I've heard. That's why Sam respected him. If he went down the path that Michael Long and Nicky Winmar did after him Newman wouldn't want a bar of him. The guy has a 1950s attitude to life and anyone that doesn't agree with him they can all get stuffed. Anyone actually ask Sam if he really knew Polly or just the Polly that had to conform to white society?.

Surely people are within their rights to question historical events and the challenge the accepted version without being sued?

Particularly people who were there and remember things differently.

I'm assuming the podcast was partly addressing the Black Lives Matter activism and Newman's recent sacking from Channel 9 because he's had a gutful of the left-wing biased editorialising from media and them ramming their "systemic racism" agenda down everyone's throats.

This seems to a real hobby horse of his. It's also why he gets branded as "racist" by his haters whenever he publicly pushes back

So maybe if this was the context and then the 3 of them started to question the Winmar incident, perhaps there is some weight to the defamation lawsuit. I dunno... Like I said, I'm no QC. But doesn't this open the door for everyone to get sued if they have their own version or interpetation of history?
People who were there?

Where you there?

The article drops some subtle clues:

Ludbey, who was shooting the Saturday afternoon game for the Sunday Age, has never wavered in his account of what he saw and heard. "Never at any stage in the last 27 years have I veered off my original story," Ludbey told ESPN. "I was assigned to do that game, and not only did I photograph it but in front of me was an Indigenous man responding to racism. I didn't hear any specific racism directed at him, but he was responding to it and lifted his jumper, pointed at his skin and said 'I'm Black and I'm proud to be Black'.
That’s what most sensible non-senile people would think. We all know it was a stand on racism...

But on what grounds could he be suing them?
Does 3 old fools offering their deluded opinion on something really constitute slander?

People who were there?

Where you there?
Where me?

Sinking tins at a backpackers in Cairns with a couple of Saints fans and watching Winmar & McAdam shred the Pies

But that doesn't matter.

Don Scott and Mike Sheahan were both there and they were saying they thought Winmar was pointing at his guts & saying "gutsy win"
So they're both wrong. Just not sure that's worth anything for damages, is all I'm saying.

Nicky Winmar would've had a better chance of extracting coin from the Collingwood president, Allan McAlister who said afterwards that people would respect him if behaved himself well like a white person
