Fair to say your all making me keen by stating how good the hand held side of it is.

It's very handy for gaming on the go. Even when I'm just lounging around I still go for hand held mode vs playing with it in the dock connected to the TV. Amusing thing is that I'm not always "holding" it, I'm usually curled up on my side, Switch on the ground and I'm using the pro controller!

Been about 80% portable - 20% dock over the last 7 years.

Its great for on the go or just moving around the house to different rooms in handheld or taking it outside on a worm summers night just kicking back. I pretty much only use it in handheld and I love it that way. Its perfect for nostalgia gaming but there is plenty of awesome variety of games you can play too. For example I love old school side scrolling games (or any side scrolling games for that matter) and I think the Switch is just perfect for those type of games. A lot of the Nintendo exclusive games just look gorgeous on it even in handheld mode. imo the Switch is a must if you are a true gamer.

For epic RPG games like the Dragon's Quest series/Final Fantasy or Octopath Traveller (which I have just started playing), games which often have over 30-50 hours of actual game time to finish, the handheld Switch is the ideal platform for me, cause I can also watch NBA/other sports or even shows or movies, whereas for FPs like Doom Eternal or stuff like NBA 2K, I prefer the PS5

But I definitely think it's the best console if you have kids/family (the switch)

I love Animal Crossing: New Horizons ! (A game esp appealing for children and adults alike)

Plus I love the Mario games .

The good news is the forthcoming Switch 2 will be backwards compatible with the Switch

Still reckon it's worthwhile investing in a Switch, given it probably is at least 18 months away before its successor is on the markets.

Yeah for me with the limited time I get I wouldn't be holding out for a switch, I reckon I will see what they are like Boxing Day, I have been burnt before with stuff buying on the Christmas specials only for it to be cheaper Boxing Day.

But the bullet and got one today when I closed up from work. Just me and the kids tonight wife is working night shift so no plans for a change over holidays / new years Probably set it up later and try it out.

Just got the EB games Mario kart 8 deluxe console with 12 months Nintendo online membership. Pretty keen to try some of the old NES games out eventually and I noticed you can buy cricket captain on here , haven’t played that in years and assumed it was PC only.

Personally think you're nuts caving at this juncture, the new system is almost certainly coming this year! 😅
Considering last year I purchased 2 games in total for the year ( Not counting a couple of game pass games) I was more than happy to buy now regardless of whether a new model is coming or not.

Fair enough - I haven't played some of the more recent Switch releases in hopes the backwards compat of the new system will include some performance boosts.

Nintendo and performance boost do not belong in the same universe.

I have pretty much purchased this to chuck Mario Kart on or some of the old school games for 15 mins when I can and just have some fun without thinking to much about it. Completely burnt out by the current gen stuff on Xbox mostly due to the lack of time and continuality in being able to play. Pre kids I had a lot of time to burn on playing campaign games like COD, Red Dead, Mortal Kombat , Resident Evil to name a few but now its just really hard to do that when you might get 30 mins a week or maybe an hour a week in total if your lucky.

I will likely get Cricket Captain from the E-Store to get my cricket fix on this, haven't played that franchise in years as no Pc or Ipad at home so this ticks that box for me and I think I will eventually hit the nostalgia fix for me and grab the Ninja Turtles collection or Donkey Kong games at some stage.

The switch will increase my game time ability now just for the convenience of it being portal, I do have to head to Melbourne monthly for work and I wasn't to keen on lugging an Xbox around in a bag or suitcase all the time.

Any games you recommend that are worthwhile on the switch?

At the very least I'd suspect the games will hit the 30fps target more consistently. Watched my niece play the new Princess Peach game and couldn't believe how much it chugged.

I wouldn't personally grab any multiplats for it, they are undoubtedly not the ideal version.

The first party stuff is consistently great though, if you like platformers than the DK games are excellent side scrollers along with Mario Wonder. Odyssey is also a must play if you've never played it.

For something to really sink your teeth into, the 3d Zelda games are very good despite the limitations of the hardware.

Donkey Kong Country Returns (HD) is coming out in a few weeks, I'll be grabbing that and will likely grab Tropical Freeze at the same time as I never picked it up previously (surprise surprise).

And the TMNT Cowabunga Collection is great, good for a quick bash (89 arcade and Turtles in time can be finished within 30-40 minutes each).

Can't really recommend others as my taste varies wildly lol, but the online collections (nes, snes, n64, mega drive) will provide hours upon hours of entertainment (even when played in short bursts too).

Cheers! I will def check out the Mario games. I had the Zelda game on NES with the gold cartridge but I can’t remember anything about the game at all, I haven’t played any of the other games after that either so it would be completely new to me but probably something I’d be willing to give a shot to.

Awesome yep so many great NES and Super NES games growing up. The turtles games were my fav even above Mario back then.
