I know they somehow managed to beat us at the Gabba, but it’s ridiculous watching them trot out a barely first-class standard top six when they’ve got a handful of others who won’t play because it’s not worth their while.

I despair for test cricket the way it’s heading - the one country with the power to start fixing it couldn’t care less.

Agree Merlin …. 55 is way to young… enjoy the little things and don’t sweat the small stuff…
A classy player during a golden era of Ashes cricket 🏏

Indeed

On the cricket side, like a couple of the Poms, he was a good player in an era where another international side pretty much dominated. In another era he might have gone better again (not that 16 test tons is anything to sneeze at)

When you're about to turn 55 its definitely way too young.

Likewise when you’re already 56. Thorpe was a very tough cricketer who left the game with the full respect of his opponents. Carried himself well on and off the ground both during his career and since then in commentary. What a sad loss for cricket but particularly so for his family. Awful news.

Wouldn't get too excited by England's capitulation - they did win the first 5 tests of the summer (albeit 3 against the West Indies, but they did knock us over recently), they brought in some promising looking younger types and they were without Stokes and Mark Wood in this test who will obviously stiffen them up significantly. Next Ashes out here is far from a lay down misere I think

Nah, you have to be confident.

They haven't won a Test here since 2011. Since then, it's been 5-0, 4-0, 4-0. The two series before 2010-11 was 5-0 and 4-1. Gee, they have taken some utter floggings here.

On Australian soil, England have only won 6 Test matches since the 1986-87 series whilst managing to lose 32 with 7 draws. Maybe they shouldn’t bother touring down under.

They could possibly try recruiting some internationals from places like New Zealand, South Africa, Zimbabwe, the West Indies, Holland, Belgium, Australia, Pakistan, India or the US&A to improve the team as that's worked for them in the past.
