Head opening is confirmed. That Konstas wont take no. 5 and Inglis will is not confirmed but I'd say it's highly probable.

I don't mind it. Konstas has probably never been dropped in his life given he has been scoring continuous hundreds since he was 12. Best to give them him the wake up call early rather than send him off into Hughes style purgatory after 15 tests. (That second innings dismissal in Sydney needs to be the line).

I’d suggest it’s more about giving ourselves the best opportunity to win in foreign conditions and picking players that have shown they can play spin in Australia in the middle order. The challenge for those players is doing it in Sri Lanka against what is most likely better spinners.

I was taking the best side in the conditions as a given. It's still a dropping though. When you buy 'Konstas: My Story' in 15 years time (or even 7 or 8 if he meets his potential) he won't be describing it as squad rotation or horses for courses. It'll be 'dropped'.

Not sure he’ll care too much in 7 to 8 years if he’s back in the side in the Windies tbh.

He’s still got a lot to prove to me tbh. So much time to improve though which I’m sure he will.

Konstas has been dropped because he's been unable to adjust to the spin friendly practice wickets. If he can't adjust to that he'll get dead set towelled up in a match.

Not sure how Head will go opening the batting.

I thought he played his best cricket, when the ball was 40 + over old, and he could attack.

Averaged +50 when he replaced Warner in the 2023 tour of India. Small sample size admittedly but his batting style helps take advantage of easier new ball conditions on the sorts of surfaces they'll be playing on in Sri Lanka.

It's a fair enough move even if it has to come at Konstas' expense.

Head opened in India and went well

Konstas wasn't really "dropped", head has resumed his position as the sub continent opener

We tried head down the order in Sri Lanka last time, it was a massive fail, Head needed to go to his subcontinent position

I think this take is spot on. Head was very good last tour of India and he's improved a lot as a batsman since then. I think he's earned first dibs, plus it makes the most sense as it allows Inglis to bat at 6.

Dont mind it but feel a bit for Konstas, he was clearly told to play a way that he doesn't usually in the Shield, got a poor dismissal and gets dropped. I guess his lip wasn't required

It's not really a dropping though

Boland will miss too, it's to suit for conditions

Even Cummins is out (same happened to Cummins in India) you have to pick for conditions in the sub continent

If Konstas doesn't play the WTC and then west Indies, then he has actually been dropped

Cricket is a complicated game, it's not black and white

They dropped Head and kept in Warner for the last India tour because of the "South Asia conditions", which worked out as well as you'd expect.
I don't have a problem with them dropping Konstas but he was stitched up a bit.

They dropped head last time because he averaged 5 at #5 in the sub continent (Sri Lanka)

He got a role at the top of the order when Warner went out that series and averaged over 40

Now he has returned to that role at the top of the order (his sub continent role)

Konstas and McSweeney both got gigs because we needed an opener, we don't need one this series

Konstas will be back for the WTC, if he isn't, then he can be considered dropped

Genius. Inventive. Bold.

will ferrell omg GIF

Head might need to have his impact before the ball is turning like the pitch has an elbow in it.

Konstas decision completely justified, and he would know that himself.

The south Asian teams seem to be stuck in a time warp. The problem with preparing turning wickets and stacking your bowling with spinners is that you still need quality spin bowling, of which there was very little yesterday (the leggie went OK).

Mitch Starc's looking forward to an easy time ... two 4-over spells each innings should be his workload.
