Pretty annoying how they are paying 50 for dissent when players just hold their arms out to gesture. Fair enough if they are abusing the umps but that is petty
They have created a bigger problem than the one they were trying to eliminate. They want to protect umpires, but then make insanely stupid rules that creates umpire animosity. And we pay these morons at AFL house $500,000+ a year out of our money as fans attending and watching games.

That penalty was nowhere near fair

While covid plays a part, crowds and some ratings are dropping. People could be falling out of love with the game with this sort of thing. (As in poor execution, not the idea of protecting umpires)

The umps will get booed by the crowd a lot more if waving arms can get 50m penalties - sometimes. Fair enough arguing or abusing but lifting arms? Wonder how Geelong will go, they always dispute every decision that goes against them 😆

If the AFL want that to be the rule, which feels like overkill anyway, the least they can do is ensure it's applied consistently. It's amateur hour when you see one out of 10 or less occurences of 'dissent' (however you want to define it) actually paid.

I think the 'fan experience' is not quite out-weighing the cost and difficulties of getting to a game too.
Now that you can watch every game on Kayo (as opposed to years ago when you needed Foxtel) and there is a separate booking process for every ticket at every game, some people are just watchign games fromhome.
That's before you consider some membership problems. There have been a number of issues this year as per the membership thread and other clubs have also had issues.

We need a 25m penalty at least - anything to do with stepping over the mark, moving on the mark, umpire abuse 25m and anything actually such as hitting a player after a free etc 50m.

50m is way too big a penalty just for stepping over the mark, usually taking a player inside 50 for a shot on goal
Problem with a 25m penalty is that, depending where on the ground it occurs, it can be more of a hindrance than a help to the team with the ball if it buys the other team time to setup given 25m isn't much of an advantage anywhere but forward of the wing. I agree that the 50m penalty is overly significant, particularly with the stand rule as we saw with Bailey Williams against the Tigers.

Yeah fair call, I guess if it’s only used for standing the mark infringements then it should really always be a benefit, with the new 50m rules anyway they don’t have to wait to be taken to the new mark but can play on straight away anyway, just means the player will have to take off from the mark and start running backwards straight away which opens up the space for them. And if a player doesn’t react quick enough to the 25m penalty ie they’re still trying to hold up the player with the ball for as long as possible you could double it to 50m. But I guess then you’re just making things too complicated when if anything we need to simplify 😂

You know you've made a mess of things when you have to contemplate creating new rules to counter the unintended consequences of other new rules..

If we euthanise umpires after every game, we wouldn’t have to deal with inconsistency as the new umpires can be robot trained to perfection of the current rules before they are “adjusted” for the next week.

Get it done Demitriou

This is even a bigger issue than the one we are debating. Having to book for every game is totally off putting. It is a pain at best and sometimes a nightmare, especially for oldies. It goes against our tradition of just going to the footy on the day. It hinders going with friends, especially kids and their friends tagging along at the very last minute. Not being able to use the membership card to just enter Marvel puts me off continuing to get such a membership.

I know it's been a frustrating process, but you don't have to book a ticket for every game.

You can still rock up to Marvel and scan your membership ticket, it just happens to be on your phone.

You can still rock up to the ground and buy a ticket if you don't have a membership. So if you want to go at the last minute with friends or family, you can do so.

Prior to this year, if you were a member and you wanted to go with a non member, you would scan your membership ticket and your friend would by a ticket. Nothing's changed, your friend can either buy it online to avoid queuing up at the ticket window at ground, or join that ticket window queue. If you had a reserved seat, your friend could never sit with you.

Once again, I know there have been frustrations, especially early on, but as someone who organises ticket for supporters of 2 different teams, for multiple generations of fans, the Dogs experience is nothing different to other clubs.

Is it difficult? Not really, it's just different.

The opening line from Derm on Face to Face on Foxfooty in his interview with the scum from GWS - "On the field he is a divisive figure, but off field he's an intelligent, articulate young man"

I nearly threw up.

I wonder if the blokes he's assaulted off the field thought he was intelligent and articulate

To be fair, a Sherrin is ‘intelligent and articulate’ when compared to Derm.

7's promo says 'Love to hate him or hate to love him....' The latter for me, it would suck to be someone who loves him

It makes it difficult to coordinate seats with friends too. That's a big factor for a lot of people too - wanting to sit together

If they call roll out a 'special comments' guy who glassed a woman and belted cops, promoting Toby Greene is just more of the same from 7.
