With Greene, how nauseating are the people who think he gets a raw deal and that the AFL have it in for him?

You know, “Oh, here comes the Toby tax!” , “If it wasn’t Toby it wouldn’t even be discussed“

I don’t have a problem if people like him as a player (even though I despise him) he is a great player, on pure ability anyone would have him.

But the AFL have it in for him? The Toby tax? Pfft.

Kicked Dahlhaus in the face - got away with it.

Eye gouged Bontempelli - got away with it.

Eye gouged Lachie Neale a week later - got one week. Shouldn’t have even been out there in the first place, the act alone should have gotten him 2-3 weeks and more with his priors.

Not to mention all his other other suspensions brought upon through his own thuggery and stupidity.

Then he blatantly shoulder barges an umpire because he’s unhappy with a decision.

Some people actually were arguing he didnt make contact with Stevic at all. Apparently it was an optical illusion and our eyes were lying to us.

Then some people say it was nothing serious what he did. Unbelievable.

Even Scott Pendlebury and Luke Hodge - both of whom I normally have great respect for - were preaching this Toby tax, he’s treated unfairly rubbish.

What he did to Stevic was absolutely disgraceful. He should have gotten 10 weeks for it, even without his prior record - and I would say that if it were any other player that did what he did, including one of our own - that was a disgraceful incident.

Toby tax? Poor persecuted victim?

Please, he’s been treated with kid gloves on numerous occasions if anything.

Clip on the news was funny with Scott defending the interpreation then clips of him losing it with the umps as a player and coach
On ABC mornings, Bryan Clarke (introduced as representing umpires from the Southern Football League, but also an experienced VAFA umpire) was interviewed, and was very strong on how ridiculous the rule is. He also stated he has no intention of applying it at the levels he umpires, and categorically stated that Scott was wrong on pretty much everything he said about it.

Clarke's point was also about common sense, and if any player appeals to him for a 50 because the man on the mark waves his arms, he'll say "nah, sorry, mate, that's not 50, get on with the game" (not verbatim, but close!).

Great post. Also all the talking heads forget how he belted a bouncer using crutches but only got away with a $2,500 fine and no conviction because of his AFL status. A true grub on and off the field, his talent is never in question but he truly has the IQ of a peanut.

Hey! Lay off peanuts - they're tasty, and they have more IQ than that f***-wit at GWS! :)

He's sadly not the first AFL player to get a slap on the wrist for an assault - Dane Swan and David King two that spring to mind, and I'm sure there are examples from all clubs. It really would be terrific if just once, an oppo player gave the grub a dose of his own medicine onfield, in a manner that smashes him, but is entirely legal, so the MRO can't f*** it up. Something like an errant Cordy knee in a marking contest. Or a Nankervis/Lynch-type forceful tackle. No malice, of course - I don't want whoever succeeds to pay any penalty at all.

(I'm not wishing injury on him per se - just that he have an 'understanding' of the consequences of his f***-wittery. ;))

So, change of topic - if West Coast roll Port as well, what happens to Hinkley?

They've got Saints at Cairns after that, then us, North in Hobart, Cats at the Cattery and Bombers at home before the bye.

On paper atm, they're a chance against North and Bombers, but with Lycett out for months, they could be 0-11 at worst, probably 2-9 at best.

Their supporters are agitating for change, taking on Kane Cornes on social media.

Surely if they are 2 or less wins by the bye after playing a prelim last year, something will have to give?

He'll be gone - you can't be coaching for around a decade, not win a flag and then go through a rebuild (or at least a "reset" or whatever). The stars aligned for Port in 2020 and they couldn't get it done (if they won that PF v Richmond I think they'd have beaten Geelong and won the flag), and 2021 too but we all know what happened there :)

Their second half last week was way better, but the Carlton formline in second halves is a weird one too. My guess is they beat WC this week by beating them up around the contest, and maybe nick a few wins before the bye.

This is Freo 2016 all over again - stayed up the top of the ladder for a few years due to good defense and getting a lot out of what might be an average list, so actually a good advert for his coaching. But won a lot of close games and couldn't quite win the big games and that cheque comes due eventually.

Don't you just love ANZAC day. Apparently before it was a football day with sweet novelty jumpers (please purchase to financially support your club!) and cool analogies it had something to do with a war?

Yes, but a war that only affected the antecedents of Essendon and Collingwood people apparently, and only players from those teams have the awareness to comprehend that war because they play on Anzac Day. Apparently Sheedy has a greater inherent understanding of that war too, because the entire concept of Anzac Day in 1915, then the public holiday, then creation of this game, were all dreamt up by him, possibly on the same night he dreamt up the Dreamtime game, because that is his entire creation too - indigenous people had no concept of football or even sport until Sheedy introduced it to them in a benevolent flourish.

Malthouse always pulls this crap (the footy and war analogies)

I don’t mind him normally but geez this stuff shits me to tears.

There used to be an annual Anzac Day thread on the Main Board, mainly C'wood & E'don supporters proclaiming the benefits and others complaining about the unfairness. One clown posted that the diggers used to play football matches among themselves at Gallipoli dressed in C'wood and E'don jumpers.

Exactly. I can't imagine there are Ukrainian soldiers under fire atm thinking "geez, this is just a like a sporting contest".

Or even our own soldiers in recent conflicts making a similar analogy.

Sport is NOT like war. I wish the comparisons would stop between the two.

Edit: I can handle the game being referred to as the Anzac Day match, but awarding BOG the "Anzac Day Medal" implies a military link.

Agree. The winning team should make a big donation to the RSL or Legacy instead, or do something to benefit the military.

You all seem to forget that Kevin Sheedy actually fought at Gallipoli.
Apparently Sheedy tried to give Monash advice, but Monash took offence at Sheedy's "look this Gallipoli campaign is just like a game of footy" comment. Sheedy then offered his consultancy to Ataturk's staff as an "assistant coach", but Kemal realised Sheedy was just trying to undermine him to get the top job.

Some poor deluded fools actually believe that the VFL played matches on ANZAC Day in 1960 when Saints played Melbourne and Fitzroy played Carlton. Of course we are lucky enough to know this is rubbish - ANZAC day football was only invented by Essendon and Collingwood. 😭

My brother texted me to ask why some tipsters have tipped GWS to beat St Kilda. How do I explain Toby Greene?

What might be a good upset for him to bet on? Essendon to beat Collingwood?

Um, for starters he looks like (except he doesn't smile):

Did Sheedy come up with the Country match v Geelong? You know because Essendon is in rural Victoria 😉
The weakest excuse for a themed match. Any excuse for future AFL Immortal Darcy Parish to win more meaningless medals I guess.

Still find it ridiculous he made the All Aus team off the back half a season of solid football.

Mock him all you like but Sheedy has been a footy innovator, a leader and a great coach ... whether we like it or not.

Essendon FC has been the beneficiary of a lot of that, but some of it has benefited the sport as a whole.

I don't particularly like him (for other reasons) but he has had a big influence on the emergence of the game from its suburban roots to a national comp that now interests even the casual observers, not just the tribal faithful.
