That wouldn’t bother me at all. Best and Fairest nights are for club backers who pay very good money to be there (that pay these players wages). Those supporters are the glue that help hold our clubs together. If Battle doesn’t want to be a Saint anymore, see ya! I get and agree with what the Saints President said about the AFL and I get they don’t want a deserter at their b&f.

It's a bit precious though. Battle clearly tried to win games for the Saints this year (as proven by the very fact he came third) and then is entitled to leave as a free agent. If being a deserter is such a character flaw that it precludes you from being in a club environment, should St Kilda have recruited players like Brad Crouch and Zaine Cordy who attended their B&F and "deserted" their existing clubs?

There's probably more to how Battle treated the club this season than meets the eye, but nobody benefits from making it public. I can't imagine St Kilda being petulant for not other mitigating reason than just to be petulant (not that if something did happen it should excuse them from inviting him anyway).

the Battle camp would of made that public no doubt about it

Battle camp would have made it public he wasn't invited
Battle camp would have not made public that there probably was at least a mitigating reason why he wasn't invited

(Not saying this happened at all) but just to provide an example if Battle acted unprofessionally to the club in his exit meeting (say he verbally abuses the coach or whatever), he might not get an invite, but it's not in the Saints' interest to leave that open to interpretation, make it public, have a go at him publicly, or even have members of the public even agree with the Saints' view on his behaviour but say "I would have invited him anyway".

My guess is there's probably more than meets the eye for the Saints to make that decision in a similar way to the example I described above.

I don't blame Battle for wanting to leave. Saints are s**t every year. Not every player is about money. Some are about culture and wanting to win. Who wants to hang around a club that is poorly run, keeps flopping on its draft picks, or throwing its draft hands away on ordinary players. Whilst playing a very dour brand of football?

Instead of trying to pick a war with everyone, and the tough posturing. Perhaps the Saints are better off sitting down, putting a mirror in front of themselves, and ask why they keep getting it wrong all the time? Their fans deserve better.

Yeah, but don’t give them any ideas.

It’s already bad enough Dodoro is out at Essendon and they may actually make correct decisions moving forward.

Yeah that was my understanding of it.

They had a long term offer in front of him for ages. Hawks and Pies were coming in with offers a little higher and they didn’t seem to phased. When they found out that the offers were line ball between being band 1 and band 2 compo they came in with a late offer that was higher and if a new team offered that amount that they would definitely get band 1. Then he accepted the Hawks offer which was lower than the Saints last offer and still line ball between band 1 and band 2 and the Saints got salty

Apologies if thats wrong and the Saints offer was always the highest

I'd be embarrassed if we refused to allow a player at our B&F regardless of them leaving our club. Especially if we are in contact with other clubs contracted players like they have been with Macrae

It's pathetic, add in them butchering his contract so he's an unrestricted free agent rather than restricted and they're not victims in this

You've got to admire a guy who climbed to the top of the football Everest and saw nothing else to conquer and decided to just walk away. Especially when he could've easily milked another 3-5 very lucrative years out of the game.

I always liked the whacky bastard. Now I like him even more.

Is a little bit of a strange one. Think I'm more pro-Max King than most people but after two injury riddled seasons, where he was not anywhere close to his best when he did play, it's a little strange to get a long term deal like this.

You would think that if the offer was what it probably should be considering the risk that he would only accept a short term deal and backing himself to get back to the levels he reached in 2022 and even more. You'd think he'd only sign a deal that long if they are still paying on potential.

I don't like the current lengths of contracts though. It doesn't grind my gears like it does Kano but I would like it to change.

Clubs are a bit damned if they do, damned if they don't. No one really wants to offer these contracts, you're a bad knee injury or a Clayton Oliver-esq meltdown away from an awful contractm. Rival clubs are offering really long deals so the clubs holding the players have no choice but to offer the same.

I wouldn't mind if they added restrictions similar to the NBA. 5 years for players on your own team, 4 years for players not on your team. Maybe an extra year but I don't like these 8-10+ year deals, even with triggers
