There are some things about American sport that are way better like umpiring and commentating. What you want to avoid are all the commercial elements of American sport. The constant ads, the ads built into the telecast, the way they'll cut to a long break when there's like 2 mins left in the period. The way they'll turn 60 minutes of sport into a 3 hour ordeal. It's awful.

Umpiring? Maybe replays are better but the umpiring still sucks in a lot of American professional sport.

Look up “Umpire Auditor” to see how bad the choices of umpires for the World Series was - and how bad some of them are at their job.

Let’s Go Dodgers!!

Is he admitting that Cotchin shouldn't have played if it actually went by previous AFL rulings that year?

Did they ever uncover footage of this "other hit" that Shiel supposedly received moments before and was the cause of his concussion, not the Cotchin bump?

The second bumper on the grassy knoll

Gotta say I don't have a lot of sympathy for him if he's gone in hard to dodge the rules that are in place.

The Melbourne Cup winning jockey today is a man of many talents! Was also on The Voice a few years ago and has a seriously good singing voice tbh.

Media: Melbourne Cup!

Me: I can't think of anything I'd care less about.

Media: But also the Voice!

Me: Touché.

Nathan Burke definitely didn't have a dog in the fight regarding a luckless, success starved VFL club coming up against the Big Bad Crows in a Grand Final did he?

I should have mentioned that comment was mostly about hockey. I don't watch a lot of baseball. I've spent more time watching docos and movies about baseball than actually watching the real thing.

As for being worried that we're becoming too "Americanised", the reality is we're in a much more globalised world than when we were kids. The internet is largely to blame for that, kids are just exposed to more things than whatever Australian media was around when we were young. As far as I'm concerned, that's a good thing. And it's not just one way traffic - I assure you, plenty of US kids are adopting various Australian sayings, practices and traditions courtesy of Bluey taking over the world :)

All I ever hear is how bad it is to be Americanised but never why it's bad?

Halloween is a great example of something that is a LOT of fun and something I wish I had the opportunity to do as a kid. I look forward to it with my kids now. This year was the first time I'd ever carved a Jack O Lantern. We haven't trick or treated in public at all, we don't like in a big built up area, we just set up a pretend one inside with lollies in each room. I did see a few local businesses on Facebook did something this year. But to be honest my kids just love dressing up and getting a few lollies and having fun with the skeleton/ghost/etc themes.

What's the harm in Halloween? It's not replacing anything. We're not losing any Australiana. My kids still play outside. We still have our other holiday seasons. We still have Anzac Day and Remembrance Day. My kids play footy and cricket. We fish in the river. They still go to school without fear of being shot. They're not losing anything Australian by participating in Halloween. Multiculturalism is a good thing. Christmas trees are German, giving Christmas gifts is Roman, Easter Eggs are from the middle east... Let the kids have fun.

Halloween isn't strictly American - but the practice of dressing up in costume & walking around the neighbourhood begging for sugary treats (trick or treat) most certainly is. It's this practice which many find objectionable, and an unwelcome intrusion of American culture into Australia (and elsewhere).

Is it just American cultural practices that we need to shun, how about those from middle east, Asia etc. I bet you're pissed off when Chinese New Year is being celebrated.

it’s been a longtime celebration for Australians of Scottish/Celtic descent descent (not meaning fans of that distasteful Irish Catholic Glasgow football team).

It’s all associated with the harvest, end of summer, ghosts of the dead walking among us on the night of 31 Oct, with big bonfires to scare away evil spirits.

That explains the bonfires we used to have at nanna and grandads, he spent 3 or so years in Scotland riding speedway, just have brought that back with him.

NHL is my favourite sport.

It’s a perfect balance of power, skill and toughness. Three brutal periods of 20 minutes where being on the ice for 3 minutes straight gets the players to the point of exhaustion. The whole squad needs to perform, nowhere to hide. Absolute international player lists. No draws, always a result. Fixture / Finals structure is logical and fair.

The umpiring is next level - mainly helped out by the rules and the “code” of how you should play the game - but that is changing a little with some players exaggerating high stick contact to get penalties. (Sound familiar)

Go Rangers!

100%

I don't really need baseball as cricket scratches that itch for me but hockey is my surrogate for aussie rules and it's hard not to view the AFL even more negatively after seeing how amateurish it is in comparison.
