You are right that taking action against homophobia and racism is essential, not only for the protection of its players and staff but it also serves a wider range community purpose. the problem is now they are preemptively deciding a moral code based on maybes and this is jumping the shark. It smacks of racing to the cameras to beat a maybe pr storm. it smacks of lecturing the public and no one asked for it.
The cake-taker for me was the AFL push to add a token woman to each team's draft room so that they looked more politically correct on TV. They didn't even have to be members of the draft team. What a ludicrous farce.

Well it seemed to be AFLW based. I couldnt care tbh. Upskilling the AFLW team should be a given for all AFL clubs.

I didn't actually say that taking action against homophobia and racism is essential in my post. I didn't make any moral judgement in my post.

I DO agree that taking action against homophobia and racism is essential - but the AFL isn't doing it because they think it is. They're doing it based on a cost-benefit analysis. How many people will this decision alienate vs that decision, and how many new people can we bring to our product with this decision vs that decision. Not to mention, what will the impact be in terms of sponsorship dollars. And then there are the more complex questions - how is the public mood going to look in ten years time? Are we leaving ourselves exposed for legal issues in the future? But at the end of the day, all of these considerations are based on the bottom line, not any kind of moral code.

They never said it was to look more politically correct on TV though, did they? That's something you just made up.

Equally - if a draft room has ~12 people, and a couple of clubs couldn't find a single woman in their entire club that could provide useful input, it says something about the industry itself.

It's something a bloke on talkback radio made up most likely (which is the only source for this story btw).

I wouldn't be surprised if clubs didn't have a single relevant woman on staff for that kind of event - but that's exactly why affirmative action exists. It's not to make things better in this moment, it's to start upskilling a greater variety of people, and to show the next generation coming through that there is a place for them if they put in the time and effort to gain the necessary experience.

People always say "you should just hire the best people", but that ignores two important realities. One, when a role has been traditionally only filled by a certain kind of person, people outside of that type are much less likely to invest their time and effort into seeking it. And two, people tend to be biased towards people who are like them, and make hiring decisions accordingly rather than solely based on talent - often doing so subconsciously.

Yep, there's a very good chance that the version of the story we've heard is not even accurate.

I have made a concerted effort recently to avoid all this Left / Right agenda stuff, so over it all. But do you know how impossible that is! Can't even go onto a bloody footy forum without it raising it's ugly head. Live and let live, couldn't GAF what you do with you life as long as it isn't to the determent to another, and right now both sides are a detriment to my sanity.

Yeah, we have politics threads for this...

Perhaps we need an AFL politics thread.

As co-major partners they have some issues:

Sacking workers, delaying contractor payments. Do you think they will want to continue sponsoring “a little team from the suburbs”?
And those losses are mounting; the steelworks is continuing to haemorrhage money as workers try to revive its stricken coal-fired blast furnace, which has been offline for almost six months this year.

"The business is stressed; I'm not denying that Whyalla is losing money," Mr Gupta said.

Ps reminded me of a few years ago I analysed the major sponsors of both SA clubs

- Port Power - Oak Milk - a second rate milk consumer product selling a fraction of the local fave. Lasted a few short yrs.

- Crows - Toyota, worlds largest car company (sponsorship now for 30+ years), BHP, the worlds biggest mining company and largest ASX listed company and Singtel, Asias biggest telco company.

Spot the difference?

GFG aren’t the sponsor , it is taxpayer money laundered thru GFG

In other news Port declare 3 million in profit (not including 2.5 mill in grants) and 25 million in asset gains.

Where's one of our financial experts to pull apart their figures?

You called.

I’d like to see the actual report rather than just an announcement which only has some of the detail.

Check out her posting history on Twitter, first mention of Port/footy is around August this year.
Now that she's publicly let her freak flag fly...My-God! Is she a serial inserter of "so called" port news in her updates on 5aa.
Every time a ****ing AFLW player does anything it's breaking news...NO ONE GAAF Slusher!

It's actually not
Didn't he play a fair amount of wing for GWS late in the season?
Where the hell has this dummy spit come from?

Cumming is a half back, he only played wing at the Giants to accomdate for Himmelberg moving to def.

We have wing options and our drive out of defense has been horrible for years. Hinge is our only real half back and even he is prone to bad turnovers

The cricket, as always, looks awesome over in Radelaide at the crowval :thumbsu: :hearts:
Would be nice if we could get Port to move their home games to Alberton Oval, permanently. :$

Oh and FYI, love Godzilla. :thumbsu:

Was a great 1st day with Starc doing his swing in steamy conditions. Thank goodness for the fans to generate breeze & plenty of fluids.

Took my Dad yesterday as he hasn't been for years & had his health battles this year.

Hopefully we can pile on the runs today.
