I've heard some really strong rumours about the Butters camp and Geelong having open discussions.

Not sure if it happens whether they'll try and trade for him or wait until free agency at the end of 2026.

As much as I can't stand Port, I'm also tired of those pricks (Geelong) continually being able to bring in top talent.
Geelong's preference is always to get the best players for nothing, both in terms of trade and salary cap impact.

For what Port would want for Butters there is no way the Cats will be able to come close to meeting a trade they want, especially given the recent trade fiasco over Houston.

Like Bailey Smith? Geelong get what they want

List goes on and on, Danger, Cameron......

It makes sense for the Cats and even Port to wait. In 2026, Port may drop down the ladder by then, meaning their compensation for Butters will be higher than anything that the Cats could offer in 2025.

Who have they brought in though? Danger a decade ago for a mid first and second, Jezza effectively for Kelly lost and now Smith off a knee reco. Am is missing a bunch of top talent acquisitions?

Makes me laugh that they grab players all the time and the one time they lost a player in Kelly they jumped up and down about it and screwed West Coast.

Imagine being a club that attracts quality players consistently and keeps practically everyone.

'' yeah but we got Dawson and Rankine and we attracted 3 players to join us and we dont lose too many and we only lose who we want - stop being negative ''

Dangerfield
O Henry
Smith

Henry, Bruhn, Bowes and pick 6, Stengle

Wouldn't have thought any of those were considered high end talents when acquired. And outside of Danger, Cats tend to pay market rates. In the same period we've traded into or picked up discards like Gibbs, Betts, Dawson, Rankine, Keays, Hinge, ANB and Cumming. Geelong don't really stand out to my eye.

1st rounders

Smith was drafted pick 7
Dangerfield was drafted pick 10
Bowes was drafted pick 10
Bruhn was drafted pick 12
O Henry was draft pick 17

Cameron was a GWS under age selection who would have gone 1st round

Is that much different to us though?
Keays
Hinge
Dawson
Peatling
ANB
Cumming
Rankine
Keane ex Pies

Plus we recruited Gibbs after Danger left us, it's on us that the value of those picks aren't still on our list.
Probably not so now, but we have only recently started to get back in decent players.

The other big difference i have mentioned many times is its about net movements.

Last season we weakened our squad with net movements out, whereas this season we have strengthened our squad with net movements in.

Cats over the years have had net trades in, whereas we usually have had net trades out... but has started to turn, hopefully our fortunes will too.

Henry and Bruhn were, Bowes kinda was although he wasn't picked at the Suns for whatever reason

Henry and Bruhn both high draft picks and Henry was doing well at Collingwood, they didn’t want to lose him
