Disagree, this is a seriously good team that will be there again this year.

Remember the Qualifying Final against Geelong last year?

They get to play at the MCG 14 times during the regular season alone in 2018 - they are a given for top 4 (probably top 2).

They just break opposition with the weight of their pressure.

Dan Butler is looking very much like Lecras did before he broke out also.

The game that should have been in Geelong? I think they are a great team and I will back them for top 4 but I suspect they will burn out like the Dogs in 2016 who played a similar style of game. Who knows at the end of the day...

Pressure is a mental thing though, it can change at any time. Unless of course their players are just naturally high pressure types who won't dip

Cripps [Carlton version] is what is hoped O.Allen will eventually develop into.

36 disposals (25 contested), 9 clearances, 7 tackles, 5 inside 50s - that's some match.

D.Martin & J.Riewoldt each had 13 score involvements.

K.Simpson gained 903 metres.

Some seriously good performances for Round 1 in that match.

It's an unfortunate fact that winning at the MCG wins flags however.

Bulldogs 2016 & Tigers 2017 are completely different teams.

Bulldogs played halfbacks as extra wings and added spares to stoppages to win contested possession.
Tigers play a 1-5 forward 6 with an emphasis on creating forward half turnovers.

Not to mention their players break tackles better than any other in the comp, really underrated ability.

Maybe its just been a long time since the footy was on but I swear the SD feed on 7mate was worse quality again than last season. Seriously rubbish picture, partucilarly on the wide shots.

Baffles me why they would shell out for rights to the footy and then use their HD channel to show the bloody Chaser but what the heck would I know. Tinfoil hat me suspects they have an arrangement with foxtel to limit the quality of the FTA offering.

Murdoch has them by the balls.

Quite a good game 1st up I thought, although given the discrepancy in inside 50 numbers from about the 10 minute mark it just looked as if the dam wall was going to break sooner than later.

Carlton look like they have added some real attacking flair this year. Richmond don’t look all that different to last year, bar the blimp of being 5 goals or so down early they were solid.

Teams will have watched how Carlton drew Rance deeper tonight and away from the high ball. Thought some of the defenders (Vlastuin especially) were left exposed when Rance wasn’t there to support.

I look at Richmond and I can’t see them going back to back. To be honest, I recall posting something similar this game this time last year- I didn’t think they would make finals! But, the way the game is these days, it doesn’t matter how good you are round 1, even round 10. You just have to win enough to get a good enough vantage spot in the finals- then hit your straps in September. We saw the bullies do it, we saw the tigers do it and we were so close to pinching one ourselves.

Also, how good is it to have the real footy back!!

I think that Tigers forward pressure is going to get worked out sooner, rather than later. It seemed really structured the way they go about building that pressure to the stoppage.

The Tigers players don't over commit to the first tackle but they really hit that second or third handball target hard. Teams are going to work out how they generate the numbers at the ball and give their players setups to allow them to clear the ball to the men who have been sagged off. A lot of time the tigers are catching them because the handball receive player needs that second to identify a target to pass to.

If teams can start clearing that pressure zone without resorting to a bang it on the boot the Tigers are going to be very exposed on the transition because they are committing serious numbers to those forward half contests.

Exciting footy for Tiges fans to watch though. it looks irresistible at times.

A prime Hawthorn from a few years ago with their footskills cutting up zones up against the Tigers would have been a good match up

I agree- the game will evolve. I find it interesting all the talk from commentators seems to be how everyone will copy Richmond’s smaller forward line. I can guarantee you if Lynch or Kennedy or any other decent KPF had been at the tigers finals time they would have played in the grand final. Richmond just made the best of the situation they had.

Pressure game styles like that are also very difficult to maintain for a long period- look at how tired Fremantle looked at the end of the year in 2014/15. They were cooked mid season. It’s so hard to keep going.

I thought Carlton disposed of the ball poorly and looked slow -also finished 2 players short. It was only the Tigers use of the ball that won it for them - Carlton's run and handball negated the Tigers pressure when done well

More open comp than some think - Crows choked in the GF for sure.

Kelly definitely hurts
Expensive though. Will be interesting to follow his career.

It’s impressive that a side like Geelong who isn’t exactly rebuilding still debuts three blokes in R1. I guess they have a few injuries though

L Forgaty looks like a gun forward. Just seen him mark and kick the first goal outside 50. He is huge for a first year player.
