I'm not sure how Grundy and Gawn co-exist though, neither are reliable goal kickers.

We made Cox / Naitanui work in 2012 by resting one up forward, and both contributed 20+ goals for the season. It's a rare occurrence of it working.
Dunno it’s pretty much the second coming of Cox/NN except you’re getting a prime Grundy rather than an ageing Cox. Gawn’s Rick ability is timeless as it doesn’t rely on athleticism. I’d be expecting big things from that combination

Grundy is 29 next year, no longer a spring chicken himself
Gawn is 31 next year also, he's going to slow down at some point with those knee recos catching up to him

Grundy probably adds another year to Gawns career but sharing the load with him

Will see how it goes, but with no Jackson now and two very old rucks their future tall stocks are dire

Agreed. I don't think it will work at all with both of them. Part of their appeal is they can ruck for 70-80% of the game, but that's redundant if there are two of them. I assume they think Gawn can fill a KPP post upfront or back, but it's a bit different having to lead/cover-a-lead, compared to running back into a hole.

Problem is Brown also basically plays like a ruck/fwd and neither he or their main goalkicker Fritsch do much in the way of applying defensive pressure.

So a lot will be riding on Pickett, Spargo and NB to prevent the ball being waltzed out, considering none of the Melbourne forwards are the type who’ll crash packs

I think Brown should go and bring back GOAT TMac

Melbourne 2021 were a bit like us in 2006. Great midfield and defence with a very suspect forward line.

I think they're pretty much done in terms of contending. Will play finals in the next few seasons but will start the slow decline.

With the mooted Hopper trade there have now been 42 first round picks (or near equivalent) traded away from GWS and GC in the last 11 off-seasons. This ignores second round picks like Jack Steele and Bobby Hill.

That's roughly 3.8 free hits for other clubs every season.

Holy shit

I'm also curious on Grundy's injury.

First game back after time off, no trauma, stress fracture. Pies very quick to come out with "will make a full recovery".

Being shopped around shortly after.

I'm sure Melbourne did their due diligence but still, I'd imagine it was a concern.

Todays current trades.

Geelong (the current reigning premier) getting a former top 10 pick and pick 7 for a future third

Richmond picking up Hopper for a pick in the teens next year and pick 31

Both from the expansion clubs

Richmond this trade period: 12 + 19 + F1 + 31 for 2 A grade mids. That’s not far off what we gave up for Kelly and around the price Jackson just went for

And no one bats a f*cking eyelid

Tell me the system isn’t broken

Holy s**t
It's ****ing dire.

On the other hand, it's ****ing dire that the Eagles have never been a part of one of these trades (see also: Sydney, St Kilda, although the Saints technically traded for a very good second rounder).

Taranto's 24 years old, maybe 6-10 more seasons left in him. How easy would it be to flick a couple mid-late first rounders for someone similar rather than chance the magic beans.

Yeah I rate Taranto massively. I hate the league at the moment.

Worse when the 19 was gifted to them by Norf for an absolute spud ruckman

Hopper is a very impressive player. Another club moves further ahead of us

Have you seen his set shot? Will be interesting to see their roles next year.

We’re never going to be able to compete with that sort of BS though. Jackson and Kelly are the two most recent high profile West Aussies to request a move home and they both cost the same individually as Hopper and Taranto combined. So even when we do get these guys to come home (which is very rare), both teams are paying a premium while the big Vic clubs continue to pillage the expansion sides

So wrong, the reigning premiers have just bought pick 7 (and a first round talent) due to the mismanagement of an expansion club's salary cap.

I dont think the grundy & gawn combo will work.

Remember when we were jizzing at the thought of priddis and mitchell in the same team.

who knows im probably wrong though, if the VFL expand the bench to 5 players maybe that 5th spot will open up the door for 2x genuine rucks again.
