It would be an ok rule if implemented correctly, but as it stands now teams are just trading a handful of second to fourth round picks to grab players like Ashcroft and Daicos. Would a North Melbourne or Gold Coast have accepted a few picks in the 30s, 40s and 50s for an Ashcroft or a Daicos. Of course not.

Clubs aren’t paying market value which is why the system doesn’t work.
Other clubs do benefit from the father son team trading out high picks.

We traded our first rounder to GWS. A bottom team.

We also traded mid second round picks, one each, to Hawthorn and North, that enabled them to move up the draft, in to the top 30.

It’s up to individual teams to seize the opportunity and place themselves in to a position to benefit from another team’s fortune.

I can think of a few AFL games in recent history that probably deserved a refund.

Ben Cousins was a successful father son player for the Eagles

Harsh on Jacob Brennan.

It is slightly odd though that we've already have four father/sons (Cousins, Waterman x 2, Brennan) but Freo have yet to have one - but understandable given not as many Freo players compared to us have played 100 games and have still only been in the competition for less than 30 years. Somewhat ironically they could have had father/son rights for McGovern had his father stuck around a little more.

We've had
Macintosh
Cousins
Mitch Morton
Brennan
Waterman x2

Forgot about McIntosh but Morton wasn't a father/son was he?

He was due to Noel Morton playing for Claremont

Then there was a recount of the games he played or a tweak to the rules so that Cale Morton wasn’t eligible to be a father/son

Can’t remember what the issue was - think it was around a state game or two

A quick browse of his Wikipedia showed Noel Morton played 171 WAFL games - but it still wasn't good enough? Tsk, and people complain when we sarcastically call the current competition the VFL.

I was talking Eagle players producing sons

Brennan, Waterman only ones really

On SM-S908E using BigFooty.com mobile app

As far as I know didn't Freo have the same rules as well when they came into the AFL with regards to WAFL father/sons? Just luck, really.

He finished in 1988 so some of those games were played after West Coast joined the comp and didn’t count

The rules for the WA and SA clubs were a bit rubbery - see Bryce Gibbs for example

The rules are back in play

Until 2006 these rules would only apply during the first 20 years of the club's existence in the AFL. This 20-year provision was removed because it was felt to be unfair if a player had a son later in life.[11]

It's why the Crows were able to get Michalanney under father/son last year. Freo missed out on Maurice Rioli Jr as he was eligible for both the Tigers and them.

So theoretically if any WAFL gun has a kid later in life we could nab him. Time to start handing out Viagra at the nursing homes

The federal government guaranteeing funding for the proposed stadium in Tassie means a Tassie team entering the comp before the decade is out is pretty much certain now. Its so very important we nail our rebuild from here in regards to drafting as there will be a few compromised drafts coming up.

Good timing really (as long as we get it right), teams that are rebuilding in the 2nd half of the decade are gonna cop it

Let's hope the Tasmanian 2-heads win a flag before Freo.

I’ll pay the fine for the first captain to call for a head count playing against Tasmania

Took 12 months to find a bloke 12m away in the next office

And we think WCE is a boys club

Totally uninspired choice

Would have liked to see Brendan Gale or Tom Harley get the job. At least those two have an idea of how the game operates at club level

No prize for guessing in the small print of this from the afl side of things will be backing a certain political stance the government is trying to push through.
