I've found Port fans to be mostly ok. It's the Crows fans that are a bit special
Parochial, and i tend to like them.
But then bumped into quite the aggressive crows supporter yday who, team support aside,.was just an angry dick. So what can you do.
Certainly did not sour a great weekend

Media and opposition supporters need to give JHF a break now. Hes a 2nd year player, just let the kid play.
Loved his last quarter effort and hinkley and his chat/embrace post game.

hear me out, gather round in tasmania, and introduce the tasmanian side then.

it's genius!
Gather Round in their first year would be cool.
Until then im thinking SA/WA.

Experiencing it here, i dont know how sydney replicate it.
Same as Melbourne tbh. It'd just feel like every other weekend

Melbourne already have half the games each round, would be redundant here

I wouldn't really conceptualise it as being hosted by a particular state, rather it should be hosted by a city. And with that in mind it should rotate in the way that the Olympics kinda does, each one held in one city with plenty of local flavour, and give it a bit of investment in the run-up as well.

The money isn't really in drawing a crowd to the game itself (Recreation Park in the Adelaide Hills only holds 7.5k), but the AFL auctions it to the state government who invest in it for the economic boost to their tourism and hospitality industries, the local community and junior football clubs benefit from the investment. Not having a stadium seating 30-40k isn't a core issue unless you're terrible at fixturing and put the equivalent of Power vs Crows in the Adelaide Hills.

And if it's basically being auctioned off, the AFL could easily put in criteria about investing in regional community football grounds. Also if you spread it out over a long weekend Thursday to Monday, you could get away with 1-2 grounds instead of 3, which makes it more accessible to regional cities.

In Vic atm Geelong is an obvious candidate, although there have been games for points in Bendigo and Ballarat in the past so there should be some infrastructure there that you can build on. Launceston, Newcastle, Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville, Cairns, Bunbury could be candidates in future too.

I'm staggered it wasn't done back then. You're old enough to remember were "optics" not a thing?

lol, back then not so much. I mean they got away with having a banner with a dummy and the sticks and stones phrase after Long complained about Monkhurst. Optics is a modern day P.C. curse.

On the one hand, I think it's really hilarious that Fox keep ignoring the GWS/Hawks game (because they're not broadcasting it).

On the other hand, it does bug me that the AFL had the Sunday games clash so you can't watch all three of them. It's been one of the great fixturing wins of Gather Round that they haven't had any overlap games, so you can watch multiple games uninterrupted.

Obviously their hands were probably tied by Seven having the Sunday 3:20 game built into the broadcasting rights, but still. Something to probably work on for next year.

Thanks! I thought the Hawks game was Fox/Kayo so I've been watching it with shit buffering.

FTA switch!

:drunk:

So Melbourne has the Premiership every year, SA has Gather Round for the next 3.

Do we have to invent half a dozen more events for the other states too?
Locking it in for three years feels like a mistake. Definitely okay with them getting it again next year, but feel like WA should've got it the year after. Especially if it led to footy randomly returning to the WACA for the first time in years.

Also seems rash to lock it in when it feels like the driving factor is how well the SA Premier gets on with Gill...who keeps telling us he's leaving at some point this year. Feels like a deal the SA Government will end up regretting if the next AFL CEO sucks/doesn't get on well with them.
