I just seen the footage of the GWS coach spitting chips again. Looks like he is trying to channel 70’s Barissi. Just needs the moe.

Why is it stupid?

There's a finite amount of money available. Not saying the AFL is crying poor, but the money they have allocated to themselves in any given CBA goes to certain activities (Auskick, indigenous programs, supporting the league's investigative group that totally doesn't try to cover up and media manage any potential black eye that's on the horizon). Less money for the AFL means there's less money for new things (Tassie team), or it comes out of things that are important, like supporting community footy

It's easy to say just give them more money but that's not how a negotiation works. I suspect the outcome will be no haircut for the men's salaries, but less of an increase than they're asking for. Also about public perception. Makes it easier for the AFL to drive public opinion if the AFLPA are advocating for an increase in AFLW wages but the men want more as well when some players are already on 7 figures.

If the women deserve more money it will be a reflection of the commercial value of the product. It has nothing to do with what the men earn unless they are brining in less than they were, in which case there might be an argument.

There’s probably not much point in talking about who deserves what at such an early stage of the women’s comp.

Regardless of how much money it is currently bringing in, you’re not going to make it attractive to the best athletes and raise the standards across the league unless the players are well paid and see it as a viable career.

There needs to be investment from the grass roots all the way to the top echelons for the league to reach its potential.

I agree with this but that's got nothing to do with the men or even deserving the increase. It's a separate investment to grow the womens' game.

I also agree the investment should be made.

I would prefer that the parties involved treat everyone involved like sensible adults rather than idiot activists.

Agreed.

The AFL can do some stupid things sometimes, but that's not to say they don't have competent people for them looking at the financial viability of the game over the next X years and where to best invest to grow.

When you're dealing with a finite amount of money, you need to use metrics of some sort to justify the 'fair wage' for a group of people.

It is likely that the men's comp is using one metric to justify and increase (possibly growth in revenue), and the women are using a different metric (possibly fan/player number growth potential, engagement scores with a previously untapped audience (young women, families with kids more interested in AFLW than AFL etc). Both metrics are valid justifications for increased wages but they may not correspond to enough growth in earnings to cover the wage increase.

The Women's comp needs to be made professional asap. Only way it improves.
Look at women's cricket since they went fully pro...improved dramatically. European soccer the same

Because instead of working FT and then going to training they can train etc.

Livingstone’s comments on that score were downright offensive, acting like it’s a strength of women’s football that they can be part-timers with better post-football prospects and like never being full time should be a long term goal of the league.

She also gave a verbal middle finger to anyone wanting a full round robin season, claiming ten rounds is a “full season”

🤮🤮🤮

She seems to be working more in the interests of the AFL party line than the AFLW she's in charge of.

Should be professional and a 17 game season (with a bye in there).

Now don't get me wrong, I think footballers (and sports people in general) are overpaid but it should be a legitimate career path.

The AFL isn't a charity either.
No, but being NFP means that they have to invest money back into the game with any profits outside paying staff.

I also think that to improve umpiring standards that they should be professional as well.

You don't think having a women's league paid competitively to attract the best female athletes and grow not only the female participation levels (which we know they have) but also see a long-term broadening of the supporter base for all AFL clubs is in the interests of the game?

Women make up 50% of the population, that's a huge untapped source of eyeballs on screens, bums on seats and membership signed up for. I could see why it's pretty appealing and would protect and enhance the interests of the game.

After all, the AFL themselves say that's one of their core outcomes;

Protect and enhance the interests of the game

Notably there's nothing at all in there about the AFL being exclusively about making a profit, or about being only played by men, or about only running profitable business units.

professional umpires is an absolute need asap

Caminiti flattens a guy and concusses him - excused as its a footballing action/forward craft so a lesser penalty applied

Zach tackles a guy, they fall over, no concussion- 1 week stands.
wait, i thought caminiti got time, what the hell.

any other player doing that would get a week lol
