Offer Naughton 6x1m. Now.

Would solve the full back problem.

I actually think there is a potential ring around involving pick 1, Naughton, Barrass and the dogs’ two first rounders that makes a shitload of sense.

Also Naughton spent 15 years growing up in Melbourne before moving to Perth. He's a Melbourne lad.

what is with footscray? they must be poorly coached. they make everything look so difficult. in finals, sure, that works. make it a grind. but they have no way of getting easy goals. they're kind of the reverse 2014-era hawthorn. if a club is going after hardwick it should be them.
luke beveridge isn't a good coach, he's a nutter (from his media appearances) and his team's inconsistent outside of finals

Bevo has never developed a decent zone defence. For a start.

From what I can see he has basically deluded himself into having something like a secondary clearance sized zone that tries to follow the ball around. It's really just a slightly more sophisticated outnumber around the ball.

As a result, they can't defend ball movement other than dominating at the source. It's a strange decision given the lack of quality marking defenders they have.

It is spectacular when it comes off. It is also suited to a modern finals campaign with the week before the bye. He is clearly a good psychologist, more of an old fashioned coach.

But it is not enough and is the fundamental reason they don't makle top 4. They get nothing out of their system, their success is all about intensity. While intensity is a necessary part of all game plans the reality is it won't always be there in games or in quarters and sometime the opposition is up for it. That's when you need a solid defensive structure to stifle the opposition.

Team balance is also a problem. With a midfield like the one they have they don't need any of the grunt role players they use. They need outside run and they can't seem to fit it in.

It's why I said earlier that Bevo is an average coach and a butcher of talent. He has wildly underperformed for the talent at his disposal.

Sure, just playing a bit of join the dots. I can't see it not coming up again before the end of the season, particularly if the dogs bomb because their key backs are arse and Barrass is actually on the move.

I think his coaching style isnt built for long term success, as you said hes an old school psychological type and I dont think that style works well in this era.

He reminds me alot of michael cheika the former wallabies/nsw waratahs coach. Their supporters/players love them because they stick by the players with passion and even create straw men to show how loyal they are.

Their boorish manner is really tiring for everyone else but it creates a siege mentality that really galvanises the playing group.

Unfortunately they arent analytical or strategists and eventually the players stop listening when the results start to dip because they have no system to fall back on.

His key players are high end draft picks and his role players are mature agers and recycled types. Barring the two Baileys Dale and Williams I can't think of anyone on their list where you would say 'gee they've turned him into a good player'.

Bevo also had at his disposal what I would argue is a historically great midfield on paper with an argument to be the best midfield of the AFL era and has done stuff all with it.

Untrue, he's developed a gamestyle that absolutely maximises their fantasy scores!

The amount of times Bont has cranked out 118-128 supercoach scores which are right on the cusp of 'do I use the VC loophole or do I gamble?' is giving me night terrors

I know this will sound strange but my opinion is that Max and Brodie have not worked mainly because Melbourne have not had a KPF the could rely on or in form. You can not set one of your genuine rucks as a go to KPF for periods of the game. For arguments sake if they had 2MP playing FF and could deploy Gawn or Grundy like we do with Draper it would be a total different situation for them IMO. Rucks can play forward but they have to be the secondary option that creates bad matchups.

Joe looks set for a frustrating night. Missed a couple of sitters so im predicting he'll burn teammates for rest of the night in attempt to get himself on the scoreboard.
