Anyone else think that Collingwood are a huge chance to upset Geelong? I have a feeling they will.

No. Sydney showed how to beat Collingwood, not that teams didn't already know it, Geelong have the team to do the same IMO.

thing is, it's a dangerous game.
my niece is 12 and has 2 already. the road ahead is keep playing and risk serious health implications or stop. It's huge for her parents.

And there's really nothing that can be done about it. very nature of the game opens such wide risk for head collisions - tackles, falls, hits.

It's an abyss of a conundrum.
Even if the AFL goes down the path of waivers, can it shield itself from liability for every player in the past? And does it risk it's future by asking players to absolve the league of any responsibility.
Unless you can find a cure for the damage, it's an extremely large elephant in the room

I could well be wrong, but my understanding of Australian law is that you can't sign certain rights away. Whether this is one of those situations I don't know.

I can say I'm very glad both my sons who played junior footy gave it away before getting to senior level and the other wasn't interested at all. Seeing one of them knocked out was once more than I really needed.

good call. i think you're right.
would be interesting to see where this would fall. its not like it's an ever-present high risk (e.g. dying driving an F1 car), but it's certainly there.

You're right, I think its you can't sign away rights enshrined by law. So surely you can't sign away your rights to pursue damages?

I imagine it would come down to what's considered reasonable actions on behalf of the AFL, things like penalising illegal or unnecessary high contact (which upsets many of the old timers) is an example of the AFL trying to make changes that mitigate risks to the player without outlawing incidental high contact.

I think that change is coming but these are still early days. You can see it in the commentary around play that, in the bad old days would be praised for bravery and is now seen as foolhardy. Maybe players are being coached differently too. It may be all in the timing - that the survey will be released at the "right" time for the AFL to both protect the game and minimise player injury but only once more measures (legal, technical, practical) have been put in place to protect the AFL's interests.

I'm not sure they can change it enough. It's not just concussions that lead to CTE, but repeated incidents of the brain hitting the skull which can come from stopping suddenly, eg changing direction when running to avoid a tackle. There was a great doco on american football showing how even at junior level kids were getting enough brain damage to end up with CTE.

Yes, that would no doubt come into it, but I think it'd be more at the damages stage rather than culpability. But then I'm no big city lawyer ;-)

Good win by the Dees tonight. Seeing as we have no hope, plus the fact that Dees and Dogs were the forerunners to the Womens comp, i hope that they go all the way this year.

Like her or not on the tv, Daisy is an icon to the Womens game. Paxman is such a good player as well, not fully appreciated I feel. Crows will sorely miss Erin Phillips this year.

I was appreciating Anne Hatchard and what she’s done to transform herself into the player she is now, overhauled her lifestyle and training regime to really put herself up there among the better players of the competition.

Makes me wonder how much more growth there will be in the game once players are freed up to train and play full time, equally with other professional sports (e.g. Netball, Basketball, Tennis) which we are competing with for talent atm.

As far as the growth of the game, onwards and upwards from here. We are already seeing it with the girls who have been able to come through a somewhat structured system of playing AFL in their youth.

They are the future and gone are the days where girls had to stop playing at 12/14 years of age due to the boys comp being the only pathway.

Give it 5 years and we won't need to rely on recruiting players, just because they excelled at another sport, still, we can't afford to discount the contribution that they have made. The AFL, although with initial good intentions, need to take this side of the sport far more seriously. As do a fair few (mostly male) supporters.

Tired of hearing complaints about skill level, low scoring. This is a comp in its infancy, how skillful was the Mens comp this far into their formation?

That will be the key to an even bigger jump in performance. If the AFL bites the bullet and keeps the pay increases going despite the fact the revenue coming in now may currently not match I think it will pay dividends for them quicker than some people think. It is already a good product. I know some have issues with the skill level and the lower scores but that is because they are comparing it to the men's game which has been going for 150 years. I just love the contest. Games are generally reasonably close as well :)

That and the game time is around 70%, 16 minutes plus time on. The number of players on the ground and bench is different, so that would mitigate the exhaustion factor at the end of quarters that boosts scores too.

We saw our VFLW team routinely putting in 70-80 point games and three digits more than once last season with 20 minutes and no time on (which is similar to 16+) so it’s not like they physically can’t do it.

Be interesting to know how much difference an encircled stadium makes to the score too, I suspect it’s harder to take territory when kicks go awry more often and you’re relying on handballs…

Putting our season in perspective. Were the older side twice this year

Damn Carlton are that young ? Freo and Carlton going to be scary

I’ve said it before (& I always get a cheap like from Beerfish for saying it) WCE are in a world of trouble for the next 5-6 years. They won as many games as North this year and they will have many of their generational players retire in the next 2-3 years. Commentators keep saying “but they have Oscar Allen coming back” but they have no one else. They won’t wave their scarves at us for the rest of the decade…bookmark it

They aren't "that young", their average age whenever I checked was usually around the middle. Just usually younger than their opponents

Yeah, they are in a world of hurt. However their KPP's look pretty solid with Barrass (who should be captain next year), Bazzo and Edwards looking pretty good down back there and I'm a big fan of Williams that they drafted last year
