Geelong gone at this rate. Nothing at all working for them and Collingwood just run and gunning.

You cannot tell me there’s not a strength and conditioning gap between us and everyone else. The amount of leg drive some of these players have is just manifestly different. A different kind of athlete.

I mean we had a team defence (Rutten), team offence (Caracella), line defence (Rutten then Giansiracusa), midfield (Caracella), forwards (Tapping), stoppages (Kelly, now ?) and ruck (Jamar, now ?) as defined concepts. So they're doing defined craft work in their lines as well as the specialist stuff as a whole group, and some blokes wear multiple hats as well (Caracella now, previously Rutten when he was doing both line defence and team defence).

I don't think it would be sufficient to have team defence and nothing about how to handle a key forward that keeps grabbing the back of your jumper or proper ruck technique or how to win a high contact free as a small forward whatever.

I wonder if it would be more impactful if the forwards coach was also in charge of team defence, and the defender line coach in charge of the team attack 🤔
Sure you might need a few extra specialist things for rucks etc but all players need to know how to handle contested marking situations with players bigger than them. In the game these days that’s as important for midfielders trying to do the same thing for get out kicks as it is for defenders or forwards in the same situation.

We’ve had general movement coaches but not taken it to the next step. In many aspects so much of the game now is almost positionless in that everyone needs to know most of the same things. Why do forwards need to know leading patterns and blocking anymore than midfielders or defenders? If they all know it then it becomes easier to move the ball forward because you’ll be able to create space and free players not only in the forward line but everywhere.

Why do defenders need to know how to defend against a player bigger than them if you want to keep the ball in your forward line? All players need that coaching.

Forwards might need more goal kicking practice and ruck craft is specialised but outside that the game has moved to a point where you need every player to be able to do a similar range of things. Sure they’ll still all have their strengths and roles, but they still should be coached to handle situations outside their primary role.

We’re now the only team not allowed to take drugs.

It's like watching a different sport.

You cannot convince me that coaching or even 4-5 number 1 draft picks parachuted into our team whether we could ever get to this level.

It’s everything. My opinion hasn’t really wavered on this but you watch a game like this and someone like Atkins running 15 metres with 3 opposition players hanging off him and it just reinforces it.

100%. we may have been the only team to have beaten both sydney and brisbane this year but in all of the finals games played so far we would have been so out of our element, even Donny would have been telling us that we are out of our element. and he would be completely correct.

A fair chunk of the team played in a GF 4 years ago
Would have thought a fit Moore, Elliott, Howe and De Goey had a hell of a lot to do with it. Plus finding Cameron and Ginnivan. Getting Lipinski and Daicos for nothing goes alright too.

They haven’t brought in any core players so it’s not really a rebuild.

How many of them are genuinely driving this form though? Sidebottom, Pendlebury and De Goey (this year at least) aren’t who they were. Elliott didn’t play in 2018, but he is obviously very good. Grundy has been out injured. Moore, Maynard and Howe are good as always.

Cameron, Johnson, Noble, Ginnivan, Quaynor, the Daicos brothers, McCreery, Lipinski, Elliott, Murphy, Krueger

That’s a lot of new players. They’ve squeezed every ounce of talent out of that side.

Oh for sure, not taking credit away from the new crop but they certainly already had the core of a good team. Not like they were North or Essendon bad.
