IMO, this type of record will mean a long stint away from the game in the future.

If he was a boxer in Vic he would be out for 12 months.

Concussion is the same regardless of what sport.
Yeah it's the same as what we're seeing with Pucovski in the cricket. At some point you stop them playing to save them from themselves.

He apparently called them 'c**ksuckers'
I'd say the bigger issue isn't what he said, it's that it's not an isolated incident of him targeting opposition players.

I get that he'd be upset about what happened but he has to be bigger than that. Sure, he's sorry now but he shouldn't be behaving like that in the first place.

Vegas getting the full NRL experience.

Stadium is half full despite giving away thousands of free tickets and there’s been an allegation of a racial slur.

So many casinos for the players to choose where they get into a fight at as well.

Make that hotel lobby, but that should really be the free square on the bingo card.

I initially thought it was a bit of a beat up, but considering the lengthy history of anger issues from Clarko it stands to reason that he probably needs to suffer some sort of a consequence for his latest outburst to send a message. If I called someone a "c*cksucker" on BF I'd be given the hammer, or if it was someone in the stands shouting it at a player he or she would be escorted out out of the stadium. So it stands to reason that it should be a the same approach to all, including a coach.

I would take it further and say the other team can pick who to remove.

Webster can stay on the field but Marshall can take a seat please.

For acts like this (glaring, deliberate intentional head high hits), tie the perpetrator to the victim.

Minimum suspension say 6 games for the act, with additional penalty of If Simpkin misses months, so does Webster. You can come back and play when he does.
If it ends his career? It ends Webster's season (cap it there).

That would fix this type of rubbish acts. If you knew you could end your season jumping off the ground to hit a guy, you wouldn't do it.

Ideally players would understand they could be ending people's careers with these acts but obviously thinking of others requires something that is a bit beyond some players, and obviously Websters family tree.

Why would he ever adjust his behaviour? He's literally never faced a consequence for any of his previous "crimes of passion".

I can see what you're saying, and kind of agree, but it'd be a hard sell to have a wide range of punishments for similar infractions. Two equivalent acts of stupidity could see one guy rubbed out for 6 weeks and the other out for a year.

I think the better option is to have a much lengthier punishment than previous years (say 8 or 10 weeks in this case), and that should hopefully be enough of a deterent. Add 50% to the penalty for repeat offenders.

Apparently Kmart is now a licensed seller of AFL merchandise, $10 tshirts etc

More accessible for people on low incomes but picks clubs pockets a bit too
Was in our local shopping centre last week and walking past the closed down AFL store. Said to my wife that they should just sell that S@&t through Kmart. And lo and behold here we are.

Stand down rules for state and community leagues;
All community footballers will stand down for a minimum 21 days in a landmark decision by the AFL to help combat concussion.

The elite level will retain its minimum 12-day stand down, but with a raft of improved monitoring.

“This new (21-day) protocol will apply for state football competitions (including the VFL and VFLW), elite pathway competitions (including the Coates Talent Leagues for boys and girls) and all community football competitions,’’ the AFL said.

Helmets;
It comes as community footballers might be required to wear helmets in the future in what would be another major play by the AFL.
Concussion expert Alan Pearce was gobsmacked at the suggestion to endorse helmets.

“I’m just dismayed that they want to even try and explore this,” Pearce, a neurophysiologist, told this masthead.

“Having an AFL-endorsed helmet does that mean there’s a bit of a revenue source for them? I don’t know.

“Wearing a helmet isn’t going to protect from concussion, and we’ve got multiple, multiple studies – including studies from Monash University who are affiliated with the AFL – showing no difference in concussion rates in kids wearing helmets versus non-helmets.

“What are the ‘AFL concussion experts’ advising the AFL on the evidence about wearing helmets?

“There’s going to be this false presumption that wearing helmets will stop concussions, and the reality is that it doesn’t.”

My heart bleeds

Helmets;
good initiative, should be included in AFL though.

i also remember hearing about an app a few years ago that generally pretty successfully diagnosed concussions, is that standard practice to use or is it still in testing?

Helmets;
I seem to remember studies that suggest the wearing of helmets in contact sports can actually increase incidents of concussion (see NFL) as helmets can give the wearer a false sense of protection, meaning players are more likely to lead with the head, or in the very least reduce the natural instinct to protect their head from contact.
