I didn’t know Elton John was a list manager ?(edit : yeh should have read more of the thread first )
The dude should be shootin' the breeze at his local Bridge club, rather than dying the rug and suiting up for trade week. West Coast are hilarious!

WA looks to have lost the fight to stage the AFL’s first Magic Round next season.

Sydney is believed to be across the line to host the April 13-16 carnival in which every AFL game will be played in the same city over one round.

But unlike the NRL Magic Round first held in 2019 and stages every match at the same venue, NSW is expected to split the locations.

The Sydney Cricket Ground and Accor and Giants Stadiums in the western suburbs are the likely venues for the round’s nine games, including double and possibly triple-headers.

The only hurdle for the NSW Government and AFL to overcome is the Sydney Royal Easter Show running at the same time. The show attracts more than 800,000 people to the Sydney Showgrounds at Sydney Olympic Park from April 3-17.

WA’s bid featured all nine games at Optus Stadium, the venue for last year’s sellout Dreamtime match and grand final.

The WA economy is believed to have reaped more than $50 million from hospitality and accommodation from last year’s grand final involving two non-WA teams. Unlike Queensland, which paid more than $20 million to the AFL for the right to stage the 2020 grand final at the Gabba, the WA Government did not pay for hosting rights.

Tourism WA has been driving the bid and is yet to concede, but it looks lost, at least for this year. Adelaide was also in the running.

“A decision has not yet been made on the proposed additional round of the AFL, with the competitive bid process still underway,” a Tourism WA spokesperson said.

“However Western Australia has been leading the nation in hosting world-class sporting events this year, and we continue to explore opportunities to bring high impact sports competitions and other large scale events to WA, to drive interstate and international visitation and showcase our beautiful state on the world stage.”

A key plank in the decision is the AFL’s war with the NRL in rugby league heartland in western Sydney.

Greater Western Sydney finished 16th this season and did not attract more than 10,000 supporters to any of their games played at their home stadium.

Only last weekend the NRL had two western Sydney teams, Parramatta and Penrith, play off in a sellout grand final in their rugby league heartland.

The AFL is desperate to regain some of that lost ground.

Brisbane’s Lang Park has hosted all three Magic Rounds, believed to have cost the State $2.1 million each bid and brought in $20m to the Queensland economy.

AFL clubs expect a windfall of close to $1 million each as incentive.

The extra round for premiership points would likely change the amount of lead-in games played in the pre-season. each team would play 23 games over 24 rounds.

In launching the WA bid last month, Tourism Minister Roger Cook described WA as the sporting capital of Australia.

“We’ve had international surfing, soccer, rugby union, the Super Netball grand final, the State of Origin rugby league and full houses rocking Optus Stadium for the AFL,” Cook said.

“Last year we showed the rest of Australia just how extraordinary a night AFL grand final can be.

“So the McGowan Government is always interested in discussing new ideas and opportunities for major events.

“We want to drive tourism to WA to create local jobs and income for local businesses and to create lasting memories for local fans.

“We want Perth and Western Australia to be an event destination for Australia and beyond.

“We value our relationship with the AFL so we would naturally be interested in discussing the potential for an extra round in WA involving every club.

“But as with all tourism-related investments, we have a considered process for assessing major event opportunities.”

The Magic Round will be incorporated into new collective bargaining negotiations and discussed with broadcasters, including Channel Seven, Foxtel and Telstra, who recently signed a record seven-year $4.5 billion broadcast deal that will run til the end of 2031.

Imagine how wrecked the surface would be after 9 games. Try bidding against after the WACA has finished its redevelopment.

I'm late to the party here, what's the point of this magic round?

Afc wombles are my grandpas team .. Wimbledon won the fa cup in 1988 against all odds before being moved to Milton Keynes against the fans wishes..
A Fans Club. A brand new team was funded by the unhappy dons supporters, starting from the bottom league moving up a division each year before leveling out in division 2.
The original Wimbledon begrudgingly handed over the Wimbledon name and became Milton Keynes after years of animosity. They dropped and leveled out in division 2 with their womble cousins where they have hated each other with spite to this day .. 😂😂
No team is actually based in wimbledon anymore.. 💔
Afc were in Kingsford when I watched them 10 years ago.

When the dons won the fa cup Vinnie Jones was on the list.

Go the afc wombles..rip grandad..and thanks for passing down a real ****ing mess of a soccer fan legacy..
As if freo aren't hard enough at times..🤪

Great article in the HS on the inside story of Jack bowes getting pushed out of Gold Coast.
Rotten culture at that shithole club.
Watch Bowes tear it up at the cats now, with a decent club and team around him.
Just imagine an imbecile like Tony Cochrane running a proper football club like Geelong or Richmond? No me neither.

Thankfully we are much closer to Geelong off the field than the AFLs basketcases nowadays
