Someone in the club pushed Ross out and Jlo in.

That is 100% on them.

So far jlo is underperforming
Ross has said himself that he is looking after the defence and leaving the offensive side to the other coaches. Even he knows he doesn't know how to coach a team capable of kicking a winning score in modern football.

Just out of interest, are there any current players on our list that we know actively disliked Ross?

Wot if RTB just had the balls to see that we couldn't win a flag with that 2016 group and deliberately bit the rebuild bullet before anyone realised it had left the barrel? Does that even make sense? If not, you need to drink more.
So he tanked to get us #3 in the draft which we promptly downgraded to #8 because our recruiters plan all along was to draft Logue who was never going to be an very early pick.

And then after a year of tanking went out in rd1 2017 playing Dawson, Suban, and D.Pearce because one year of tanking was enough for us to be a contender again?

Yeah, nah. I reckon he just lost his way.

Ross trading De Boer at just 26 is idiotic. Never understood that.
Barlow leaving.
Kersten coming in pissed me off. Horrific player and a POS attitude

Ross and the list management was shit towards the end

He didn’t, we were the oldest team every round until very late in the season in 2016.

This. We still rolled out sides that were experienced enough to win each match until mid-late 2018 when we finally bit the bullet.

Round 1 2017 we played Geelong and had the older and more experienced team than them. They beat us by 7 goals and they haven’t been known for fielding inexperienced teams for more than a decade

In 2018 we started getting younger but still had the more experienced team than Port in round 1. Lost by 50 points.

We were fielding teams that were experienced enough to be competitive but we straight up weren’t. I’ll grant that the cupboard was bare and the recruiting was terrible (I would have sacked Lloyd at the end of 2014) but by the end of 2019 it was clear Ross and the club no longer fit.

They went out to market. Last year. Got a great deal for them. ($14m, I think the SA government stumped up?)

The vendor fulfilled their end of the deal, so their contract got renewed.

The customer (the AFL) gets a proven product from a vendor that has a track record of delivering. All without any additional procurement costs.

That's the way business is done every day of the week.

When you have a bunch of other people saying they want in, it's gross negligence to not even ask the question. Procurement costs? What, a few phone calls?

Challenge.

I remember it very differently. I feel like we hit the rebuild button in 2016 and hit it HARD.
Pavlich, MDB, C.Pearce, Mzungu, Gray, Deluca, Hannath, Hurley, Morabito, T.Smith, Barlow, Silvagni IN ONE OFF-SEASON IS NUTS.

Next off-season it was Yarran, Dawson, Ibbotson, Clarke, Griffin, Collins, Uebergang, Suban.

For those playing at home, that's half the damn list! I can't think of many other clubs who have had such a massive turnover.
That's not to say there weren't mistakes. MDB stung. But not too many people on here were lamenting the decision at the time.

Lots of hindsight going on here at the moment, far out. Saying we 'should have split pick #5 in the 2018 draft for a bunch of speculative picks in the second round is ridiculous. The hype on here when we'd secured two top five picks was enormous. Drafting with hindsight is very easy.
This board is doing my head in lately I swear :tearsofjoy:

Think trading in spuds for the next three years was the crap idea. Matera/Kersten/Hogan off field/McCarthy etc

If we just drafted heavily and bottomed out completely, we would’ve played finals sooner.

Yeah, that's my main memory of that period, huge list turnover, clearly full on rebuild.

I’m baffled Swans let go of Dawson at pick 16. Was he out of contract? Adelaide seem tough to deal with and must have said pick 16 or gtfo and Sydney just agreed.

I would assume that part of the reason to keep gather round in Adelaide was to make the Vics happy as they won't have to travel as far (wouldn't be surprised if there were a few requests made from prominent figures)
That was 100% the main reason. I saw in one of the articles that 11 of 14 eastern teams only agreed about gather round on principle if it was held in SA

Adelaide had pick #4, then traded #23, #37, #44, #62, #66 and future 4th rounder for Melbourne's future first and pick #33

Adelaide finished 15th that year and ahead of them in the preseason draft was North, Collingwood and Gold Coast - with Dawson going home to SA.

Based on current ladder, West Coast could get a similar deal for Pickett or any out of contract player they had lured over.

Didn't even trade Matty DeBoer. Effing de-listed him

I don't blame Lyon for all our list management fails (or successes) during that period. I reckon it was a true group effort.

Do you honestly think that the AFL would leave money on the table?

They are pretty bad at many things, but not at finding a dollar.

Who knows what the deal is, but I bet that SA are now paying more that $14m a year for the next three years.

Its a shame because it would have been great to have the event in WA. But last year our state government was playing checkers while the South Australians were playing chess.

Imagine if we had a state government who aggressively pursued Gather Round last year. Perth could now be the host city for the next three years.
