With Cripps it was less of a well-formed idea/plan and more of a systemic bias kind of thing.

Unlikely it was an AFL thing per se. I tend to think they would've preferred the sanction stand (for the most part). I reckon it does have more a Melbourne-centric and da feels element, where the sentiment in Victoria media and reactionary fanbase was more to let him off. This combined with Carltoon's established resources, in the legal community especially, helped get him off.

Feels like a “not malice, stupidity” thing to me. It was an absurd loophole that let Cripps get off and it was an issue moving forward so they’ve closed it. Blame the AFL moron who made the wrong judgement / ruling in the first place

It was the lawyers

Much tin foil hat nonsense going on here, stating the AFL let it happen to give Carlton a leg up is ludicrous, it is emotive bias getting in the way of rationality.

The AFL are staring down a shit storm of concussion litigation, they are serious about protecting the head because they're getting sued left right and centre. Cripps getting off is a humiliation for them in the face of this.

Take off the purple coloured glasses.

Four field umpires per game confirmed. Thoughts?

One of my biggest gripes with the umpires is that they sometimes watch the ball coming in instead of the players jostling for it, hopefully the extra will mean the 'loose' umpire will be tasked with watching the next contest.

We should expect more deep forward fifty holding calls, in both directions.

The absolutely ludicrous decision to clear Junior Rioli earlier in the season paved the way for that Cripps decision.

If Rioli goes, and the slime are firmly put back in their box for having the temerity to even challenge it in the first place, then the Cripps overturn doesn't eventuate IMHO. He maybe doesnt even bother challenging because the message would have been clear. But no, the AFL manage to stuff it up again.

Once again, as with everything, the bloody weags ruin it for everyone. Just deregister them already FFS.

I am all for it. One of the biggest complaints about umpiring is what they miss and not the actual calls unless it is a contentious call at the death that impacts the outcome of a game. If they have one on the blind side of the contest at all times I think it will make a massive difference. Sitting front row behind the goals at Optus, the amount of holds and high tackles I see both ways that don't get paid because the umpires can't see them is staggering.

Perhaps. Sounds like there'll be two umpires at every stoppage so they're more interested initially in policing what is going on around the ball
To be honest the whole thing sounds as much about getting more women umpires involved at the elite level as it does about enforcing the rules of the game, when you read them talking about why, a lot revolves around reducing the physical demands on umpires and having more diversity amongst the umpiring body. Which is probably a good thing really, we should have more women umpires.

Agree 1000%. There are far more sins of omiission i.e. non-calls for obvious frees, than there are sins of commission.

Calling the odd obvious free that may or may not have been missed with 3 umps is the only positive I can see with this move and I'm not certain that will happen!

I hope I'm wrong and the standard of officiating the game improves as its firmly tied into the enjoyment of spectating for me.

Not just women though, if there is less running load then the umpires could front up again for another match in the same weekend.
