To the latter point, I think Williams is from regional nsw and came up through the giants academy, barracking for them when he was a teenager. Not saying its the be all and end all but he has got some pretty strong connections to the club which may make it hard to move him
I don't think he grew up barracking for them. He was on their inaugural list in 2012.

I must have gotten him confused with one of their other youngsters then. Hopefully I'm right and he grew up in regional nsw, I recall reading something about them playing a preseason game in his country nsw town a while back

I could double-check and make a more informed post, but that's not the big footy way

You definitely have that part right. He's a NSW boy.

I think we have just as much chance at the ultimate success over the next 5 years or so as the Giants, here's hoping a bit more money might sway him, would be a great get.

Agree with this. Yeah sure, players want team success, but c'mon, you can't tell me that if you were in his shoes & just saw two of your team mates sign multi year million dollar deals over the last six months it wouldn't make you think about your own financial future. He also knows, his contract isn't the next one on the priority list either lol, Cameron is out of contract too isn't he? The difference between what he could get at GWS & another club is probably more than most of us earn in a year lol.

You're closer to right than lionshine was. Zac was a Giants academy kid from the Riverina. Giants have played preseason games in Wagga (including against us), down the road from Zac's home town. I wouldn't say he grew up barracking for them (Giants only existed in one form or another for about four years before he joined them) but the rest is right.

Was it 2013? Irregardless the point remains he didn’t grow up barracking for a side that didn’t even exist up until one year prior to him entering the AFL system... As a NSW boy I would be surprised if he opted to leave them though. Very important player for GWS.

He was rookied in 2013 (technically part of the 2012 draft), at the end of the Giants' first season.

While I already agreed he wouldn't have barracked for the Giants as a kid, the Giants academy kicked off in 2009 in an attempt to bring more kids through what were then the Giants' zone concessions, and he was one of the initial members - three plus years before him entering the AFL system.

Yeah I remember him being part of their academy. I think he’s stated in interviews how attached he feels to the club dating back to his days with the academy.

If Williams main motivation was money then you're right. If he wants to play in a successful team then these players re-signing might make him more likely to re-sign.

We have a pretty good story to sell in that regard as well and a younger list to go with it. Likely a longer period of sustained success.

Not sure about that last sentence. I reckon GWS has drafted enough top end talent in the same 3 year period as us, that all they have to do is surround it with complimentary players.

We genuinely need a couple of our later picks to turn in to genuine stars, to go with McCluggage and Rayner.

McCluggage, Rayner + J.Berry, Witherden, Bailey, Andrews, Hipwood is a pretty good young core group of players who have shown plenty to start with.

The only late pick who has shown a lot is Noah Answerth(pick 55), on what he showed in his 1st season I'm confident he will be a very good player, "genuine star" is a big call though.

We just have to hope 3-4 of our last few years of draftees step up, be great to see one of our 2018 draft crop grab a senior spot this year, one of E.Smith, T.Berry or McFadyen would be my bet, Jack Payne from 2017 draft also a good chance IMO. I also expect Toby Wooller to put pressure on Cam Rayner in 2020, I'm hoping Cam has a breakout year though.

Don't forget Fullarton (maybe in 2-3 years)

Right now I’m only counting Andrews and McCluggage as stars or soon to be stars, with Hipwood and JBerry close to joining them.

The rest still have to make the step, or several steps up in class.

I think we’ve seen flashes from the rest, but little more at this stage.

Rayner and Robertson would the two most likely to become stars imo.

I agree, l feel like the term "star" gets thrown around too often. Plenty of media articles say that a star has re-signed or injured or whatever and it's some fringe player from Carlton or Collingwood etc. Star is like the top echelon of players in the comp reserved for the Martin's, Fyfe's etc. I would put Andrews in there and probably McCluggage. Should have been AA as he was the best winger with way more goals than any other. Berry imo would need a significant improvement from last season - noting that he was majorly interrupted (he was ready to breakout but the glandular fever ruined that and then Baker's cyst).

Jack Payne for me is the one I believe will step up and play regular senior footy providing he stays injury free. The backline needs someone like Jack to come in & help Andrews with 2 opposition tall forwards. I dont see Adams doing that & although Dizz does an acceptable job, in my opinion he's best suited to the smaller forwards. Jacks a big unit, hard at it & loves playing close to the opposition key forwards.
Rayner wont be given games like last year should his form drop off along with Bailey, Witherden & McStay. We have reasonable depth now & everyone needs to execute their roles each week or someone in the 2's will be there ready to step up when required.

Tend to agree. I think he was ready for a few games in early 2018, but missed the whole year injured. Jack seems to mark his player closely, and he has good speed. If he can have a good preseason he puts lots of pressure to be included early in the season.
Alex will need to be more consistent and hopefully he is, because there are options

I know its a bit early to be putting his name out there but Callum is one who could really step up if we can help him get on top of his injuries and give him the proper development a stable club can offer. Not saying he will be elite as he hasn't proved to be that so far but he is part of that younger cohort now and I'm sure will be keen to prove a point. He certainly brings some weapons and is AFL ready.

Do you mean Callum Ah Chee?

My initial impressions from the last two training sessions I’ve been to, is that he has looked out of his depth in the skills and game play.

That's interesting because Michael Whiting said on the latest podcast he picked Ah Chee to take over Hodges vacant spot in the back line and he had seemed to fit in very quickly. Still not surprising he might be taking time to adjust to a new game style and team mates.
