When i arrived at the game I found for a measly ten bucks you could sit in the cheer squad which took me back many years when one of my sons would sit with the squad. Still lots of fun and i will do it for the rest of the year.

I note once again this site is fixated on the umps. Yawn.

Bits I noticed from behind the goals.

Goater played very well in the second quarter. He may be a player. I have not noticed him playing well at AFL level before.

LMac, hated by many, applied some crunching, crucial tackles and was continually setting up the defence behind the ball, something you will not see on the TV.

Need another avenue to goal.

Defence stood up.

Bailey S missed the easiest snap in the third quarter that may have iced the game. I like Bailey as he has a red hot go, but he is a battler. Probably sums up the day.

Much better effort and they sell fredo frogs for a buck behind the goals. Probably without a license.

I’m sure if we played Emma Kearney at full forward today we would raise the profile of female players and inspire more women to play but it’s not exactly what we’re here for is it?

4 umpires havnt improved the level of umpiring, in fact just adds more confusion such as goldies mark . Fwiw i think it was after the siren and surely one of the umps heard it. Was the same decision that won us the game against freo and imo was correctly called on that occasion.

Four is ok if you have enough quality to cover all games.

What we are seeing now is umpires who are not up to the level being given games to make up the numbers.

What’s even worse is that they are filling the bigger games with the best umpires, so by the time you get to the lesser games they are filled with four umpires that are not up to it.

If the AFL is going to persist with four they need to spread the quality amongst the games. We now have a situation where shit umpires are umpiring with each other and turning the game into a cluster ****. I’m not sure how they expect these same umpires to learn when they are on the job with other umpires that are not up to the level.

It’s like sending out four apprentices to work on a multi million dollar project by themselves and hoping the job gets done properly.

We laid 88 tackles to 75 and never got rewarded. I actually watch them reward Higgins for a tackle when he let Tucker go hoping to get deliberate.

If this was a big club coping this absolute garbage umpiring it would be talked about on every talk back station and highlighted.

Because it’s us they are happy to let them fist away. It’s only North, who cares is the directive from AFL House.

I can cop bad umpiring, but what I can’t cop is inconsistently bad umpiring that favours one side. Calling the same action differently depending on the team is rife in this competition.

We would have wins against the Swans and the Saints if the umpires were even just marginally more competent.

Why do we celebrate someone that can’t do their job, I don’t care whether you’re male or female.

Because it's not a level playing field in the first place. For every Eleni there's probably 100 young girls who quit umpiring in the junior ranks because they don't want to deal with all the bullshit that comes with being female in sports that have been traditionally male. If fast-tracking her keeps junior girls in the system it's not necessarily a bad thing.

We cop shit male umpires most weeks and they don't seem to get the same vitriol. If she was the only bad umpire out there then maybe all the carry on would be justifies, but she's not. She's just the easy target.

I’m not bashing Phillips, but let’s not compare the simplistic numbers of Phillips v Cunnington.

Cunnington’s possessions are impactful, I’m not sure we can say that about Will yet.

I like the kid and think he has tremendous upside, but he needs to eradicate the fumbling from his game. At his height and pace he needs to be super clean to have maximum impact.

All our mids need to get better with their cleanliness around the contest. That split second double grab is enough at this level to prevent a clean clearance.

I think I'd prefer to have 3 umpires and get pissed at the ones they miss.

Rather than have 4, and they all look at each other and an out of zone umpire blows the whistle to make a call and STILL gets it wrong.

Exactly, i would argue the male umpires today were actually very bias, but unfortunately because she's the easy target, apparently it's her fault.
I actually thought she was quite good today and it was the male umpires who were shit.

Healy, uncharacteristically, made some reasonable comments during the game, but as always, lost me at the end when he said "well, that's what the Kangaroos need to aspire to". With everything taken into consideration of that game, if we're aspiring to be St Kilda, we really are in the shit. It's a hard loss to take because we had them for 3 of the 4 quarters, and it would've been nice to do it for Ratten. I know several women who have been involved in the umpire pathway system. Eleni deserves a knighthood for making it as far as she has done.

That doesn't mean she is a great umpire of course but she didn't get an OAM for that.

Well I umpired Senior football in Geelong, there were a number of young women Umpiring at this time.
The Umpires did everything in their power to train them, support them and promote them.
Paired them with experienced men to learn from etc...

I think you make unsupported claims based on antidotal evidence not supported by fact or evidence and I think you should stop.

I know they're contracted, but how much longer do LDU, Wardlaw and Sheez want to go on like this. I guarantee you Sheez doesn't re-sign after r1 if he knows what's in store for the rest of the year. These guys are hungry for wins. A lot of our blokes aren't, or don't do enough to make the win happen. LDU was furious today and rightly so. Wouldn't begrudge him a trade request before his contract is up at all. Call me overdramatic but the change that needs to happen to ensure this year doesn't repeat next year is extraordinary, and potentially beyond a lot of our players
