It’s been funny to hear Crocks at pains in every interview to say they didn’t talk about the big three record or monkeys on backs, it was all “trust the process and when we follow the system well enough the results will take care of themselves”, and then every players interviewed saying “yeah, we had a point to prove”.

It was like watching a kid who always gets pushed around going nup that it not how it is anymore I am the one who does the pushing.

In previous outings we have seemed to bottle it when a team got physical. We could go in fits and starts and then the opposition would amp up their physical presence and put us away. the Brisbane game this year was a clear example of this (happens in the Men's too, the second saints game is an example) it is where we just get bullied out of it.

Sunday that stopped. We weren't the ones being bullied we were the bully.

We keep that edge and it doesn't bear thinking about....... yet.

It's amazing how often Melbourne players would drop the ball or otherwise incorrectly dispose, then proceed to throw their arms out like they'd been infringed upon in some way. Like they were just owed a free for showing up at the contest.

Jenna is a brute, love watching her so much. That clip highlights that every player was all in, talls and smalls, every part of the ground.

Yeah she's got that thing where because she's smaller she's determined to hit twice as hard

They (AFL) are saying we are ranked #1 seed with all the remaining teams. This means we autamticaly qualify for a "home" final if and when we win our Prelim. Where would the GF be played if we get there then ? Arden st ? Surely not big enough ?

Immense Geelong/Dogs blokes team methods

Au contraire. There was one person saying that, in a thread titled "100 Most Valuable AFLW Players" published on 3 December 2019.

And ohhhh what a wise person indeed:

(Only reason I didn't have her at no.1 was to counter accusations of bias--not that Antonio did a bad job of filling in.)

Hence I'm rather amused by people around here trying to lecture me about how good Garner is. The gumption!
Receipts. Noice.

So why was she at number 10 last year and number 11 this year?

Why can't I shake off this image of the Nostradamus, Teen Wolf and Kane Cornes, all being the same individual or at the very least, clones of one another.

The common trait is that in their eyes, only, they are never ever wrong.
With two of them, I am always left wondering if it's all a piss take and they don't take any of it seriously. With the other one, there is a sense of taking themself a little too seriously.

It will be played at Ikon park..

It's about what a player is projected to bring over the remainder of their career.

In other words: if the competition started over and all 18 teams had to redraft their entire lists right now, Garner (and Riddell) should still be taken in the first round despite closing in on the 30yo mark.

All four should make the final team, all had outstanding seasons.

An under-discussed aspect of the game: Gee Melbourne supporters are a funny bunch. They genuinely seem to have trouble with the basics of the game, far beyond the usual "just kick the bloody thing" type callouts. A guy near me kept saying "who was that to?" frustratedly at increasingly strange times, like when Melbourne weren't even disposing of the ball. Eventually he even said it after a throw-in.

Should all make it. Only reason they wouldn't is if they go the "inclusive" approach, pretend the league is more equal than it is and try to cram a bunch of bottom 14 sides' best mids in there, snubbing Ash Riddell even though she'd win any of those sides' B&F.

Sometimes stereotypes exist for a reason. (Which I should know well, having been squashed among strangers in the celebrations near the fence at the end of the last men’s grand final.)

Hopefully the league is a little mature now that the "inclusive approach" is no longer warranted and players get in on merit.

  • Garner is a cert, she is the best player in the league having her best season ever.
  • Riddell should be a cert, she is one of the league's best mids having arguably having her best season ever, leads the league in disposals and is top 5 in clearances and metres gained.
  • Kearney is a cert, statistically, this has been her best season since moving into the backline and is a major piece in the best defensive unit in the league.
  • Ferguson should be a cert, the Doc (Alex Docherty) who writes all the AFLW articles on the mongrel punt website has access to a lot more stats than me and he continually points out she has the highest one-on-one win percentage in the league, concedes barely a point and gives her opponent less wriggle room than a pair of Lenny Kravitz's leather pants. She is the best fullback in the game, and I'd love to see get a guernsey, she deserves it.

But then I'm biased. :)

Watching for the third time. Jasmine smothered a kick about 6:30 into QTR two but doesn't even realise it until she sees the ball scooting away just near her. I also think she could make a clearing kick with both legs bound. At least once a game she will be surrounded by opposition players, they will be hanging from her, and she still gets the ball to boot. Unbelievable.

I will also have to acknowledge that I've previously been critical of Craven but realised at a recent game that there is a lot that the stats and the tv camera don't show, the slightly off screen actions. As many have noted, including the CTTG podcast, she was playing her role. That would be why she keeps getting picked.

Will be interesting how much our great win was tempered by the opposition genuinely being subpar.

In a couple of plays dees ball movement was slick and we couldn't really address it.

Guess I'm just wary of meeting them again in a GF and finding week 1 was an anomaly.

Hope like heck not of course.

I’d expected after their loss to Brisbane and under a very good coach that Melbourne would have been primed to make a statement themselves, and that after beating North they’d have been ready to see us come out with more of our usual intent. They looked like they were going to get out a few times but we kept closing them down, either up the field or in our defensive 50. Unless there was something going on that we don’t know about, I think the result and margin reflected how well North played and the fact they were relentless.

There was suggestion their squad had copped covid which would be a reasonable explanation for their lacklustre output. Them's the breaks and it doesn't dimish the win for mine, just cautions expectations.

Obviously I hope it was because we've turned a corner and become a real contender.

"Rick Aylett will tell"

This.

We have brought the relentless pressure for a quarter or two previously & matched them or got on top. This is the first time we sustained relentless pressure over four quarters. As a result, we smashed them.
