Garner isn't even as talented as Emma King, let alone Chloe Molloy, Ellie McKenzie, Ebony Antonio, Tayla Harris etc.

That she's clearly a better player than all of the above is the result of having spent more time understanding her game and accepting feedback from coaches, while also being a more selfless teammate and a harder worker--things not typically associated with talent.

It could be said Garner compensates for her limited speed and jumping ability by being a naturally better reader of the play, although that was something Gowans made a point of highlighting about Molloy six years ago:
Yeah she's definitely a better player than those others you mentioned.

The best players in any comp are rarely the most talented.

anyway, enough of this rubbish.

Anyone thinking of coming over for the game in Adelaide to watch the talented Garner in action may also want to check out Harvest Rock Festival that is on the same weekend. Should be a cracker.

Jamiroquai and Beck!!

Is it 1993 again already?

Great to see Jazzy F getting some recognition, she has developed into a very reliable fullback.

The 3-2-1 on the radio gave Harriet Cordner a vote as one of the top three players on the ground. She was great but this better reflects the game.

Swept the votes! Quite rightly too, although Cordner was very good. Go you Roo girls!

Yeah, I wouldn't have been upset if Cordner got a vote, as she was excellent and probably stopped 5-6 goal scoring opportunities, but like H2H stated I think the coaches' votes reflect our dominance.

No Riddell in the team of the week, but Cordner made the team.

THE WEEKEND'S action was a forward's paradise, with six goalkickers virtual walk-up starts to the round two Team of the Week.
Gold Coast small forward Jamie Stanton led the way with a bag of six, just one shy of Brooke Lochland's 2018 record of seven goals.
The team is selected to mirror the All-Australian side: five defenders, six midfielders (including a ruck), five forwards and five interchange players, trying to get as even a spread of playing positions on the bench as possible.

DEFENDERS

Chelsea Biddell (Adelaide), Jasmine Ferguson (North Melbourne), Issy Grant (Western Bulldogs), Emma O'Driscoll (Fremantle), Sarah Sansonetti (Collingwood)
Fremantle defender O'Driscoll (19 disposals, 14 intercepts) has eased into the season nicely after suffering a leg laceration during a practice match and fellow No.3 Grant (12 and 10) was one of the Dogs' best in a tough loss.
Sansonetti (15 and 10 intercepts) played one of her best AFLW games, Ferguson (10 and eight marks) continued her quietly consistent performance and Biddell (11 intercepts) helped hold Richmond scoreless after quarter-time.

MIDFIELDERS

Lauren Pearce (Melbourne, ruck), Ally Anderson (Brisbane), Kiara Bowers (Fremantle), Monique Conti (Richmond), Jasmine Garner (North Melbourne), Charlie Rowbottom (Gold Coast)
Pearce
(19 hitouts, 16 disposals) was one of the most influential players in Melbourne's big win and was the only ruck to poll coaches votes.
Rowbottom is first picked of the mids, setting a new clearance record of 16 to go with her 33 disposals and 10 tackles, while Conti (29 and 10 clearances) played a lone hand in Richmond's loss.
Anderson (36 touches, five clearances) was simply outstanding, Bowers (23 and 17 tackles) returned to the AFLW with a bang, and Garner (36, eight clearances and a goal) had the ball on a string against Carlton.

FORWARDS

Dakota Davidson (Brisbane), Kate Hore (Melbourne), Tahlia Randall (North Melbourne), Chloe Scheer (Geelong), Jamie Stanton (Gold Coast)
It was a round out of the box for the forwards, kicking off with Gold Coast's Jamie Stanton, who booted six goals from her 11 disposals.
It was hauls of five for season seven All-Australians Chloe Scheer (10 disposals, four marks) and Kate Hore (23 and eight), while Dakota Davidson (13 and nine) and Tahlia Randall (15) kicked four each.

INTERCHANGE

Tara Bohanna (Gold Coast), Harriet Cordner (Carlton), Tilly Lucas-Rodd (Hawthorn), Ebony Marinoff (Adelaide), Maddy Prespakis (Essendon)
Gold Coast skipper Bohanna kicked four goals from her eight touches, taking six marks, and at the other end of the field, Cordner (19 touches, seven marks) held firm in an under-the-pump backline.
Lucas-Rodd (21, six clearances and a goal) was best on in Hawthorn's big win, Marinoff (23 and 14 tackles) relished the wet conditions at Ikon Park and Prespakis (29, six clearances) led from the front in Essendon's return to Windy Hill.

No Riddell is pretty shocking after the game she had. If she played for any other club they'd be naming the B&F medal after her.

I suspect they didn’t want to have too many North players, especially after a game against poor opposition, but I watched the Pies v Freo game and she was better than Bowers this week.

We're going to make a lot of opposition look very poor. Doesn't diminish individual achievement.

You can't just make a statement like that and not expected to be called on it.
I'm more than happy to have a discussion about an AFLW topic in an AFLW thread (whether other people like it or not).

But anybody who responds with just one word or a gif is simply being a prick and not actually contributing to the discussion.

Fair enough, let's start again.

I'm not sure how you arrived at the position that Jassy is less talented than King or Molloy etc.

I'd say she's one of the most naturally gifted and fluent footballers I've ever seen.

How about we end the discussion instead, it went on for too long last week and isn't worth brining up again this week.

I saw this after watching the Credit to the Girls podcast and realised it's all - including the team of the week - marketing. NMFC barely got a mention, the discussion was 100% on the failings on Carlton. If you asked an actual team coach that wanted to win, Riddell plays every time.

A footballer whose skills appear to be fluent (such as accurate kicking and clean handling of the ball) is mostly just reflecting the quality of their coaching and training. To say her skills are more due to natural ability actually detracts from her dedication to master the craft.

If you saw Andre Agassi play tennis, you might think he's one of the most naturally gifted returners of serve ever. But what you're actually seeing is a mixture of some talent and mostly his dad beating the skill into him from age 3.

What I'm saying isn't controversial. I'm not sure why anybody would say it's bullshit. Perhaps the fact that Garner hasn't been given her due in terms of league awards is fuelling the impulse from some on here to needlessly defend her worth as a player, which is still more understandable than self-appointed hall monitors trying to steer discussion away from a legitimate topic.

It sounds like the goal of the minimum $70,000 salary by 2026 is going to be achieved, judging by the latest CBA news, which means soon no player will have to choose between staying at their club or leaving for a full-time salary. That is particularly noteworthy considering Tasmania's impending addition.

Nevertheless the 19th team (if they know what they're doing) would surely have to make a too-hard-to-match offer for their ideal inaugural AFLW captain, i.e. Nicole Bresnehan. She'll be 30 or 31 at that point with 8 or 9 years of steep improvement at the elite level under her belt, which she absolutely would not have got without North Melbourne btw.

I would have that quality right up high in what makes the best footballers.

By the time a woman arrives in the AFLW, you’d have to have known and watched her most of her life to know how much of her skill and knowledge came naturally and how much came through hard work and practice and good teachers. You can only see how they perform and how that performance improves (or not) once you are watching. How they got to the level where they got watched this closely is otherwise guesswork. I’ve seen some pointless and strangely heated discussions on Bigfooty in my time but this is getting up there.
