North releases Harvey, Dal Santo, Petrie and Firrito

I'm talking about next year. He looked cooked at several stages this year. Another year on with another pre season and I think he has nothing left in the tank. I'd be very surprised if anyone looked at him
Yeah i agree with that. Would easily play 1 more year in the vfl tho.

What is he wants to play on until 2020? You would keep him going as long as he wanted?

.
If he's performing, why not?

I never understand this bullshit excuse of players holding younger players back, especially when you're competing for finals. Surely you play your best team?

Name them.

Oh, and doesn't excuse the way it happened. Collingwood and Swan? Classy even though everyone knew. This has come before finals, with Boomer still in ripping form, via a Tweet.

Robbie Nahas.

I wouldn't rip North for this. Tough call but the right one. They aren't pushing for a flag in the next few years so what does Boomer buy them in that time. Yeas he has experience but he can provide that in another capacity.

Everyone knows they aren't flag material but axing Boomer doesn't help that.

Gibson, Thompson, Ray, Wells, Dal Santo, Waite, Firrito, Petrie, Harvey are all 30+. Swallow and Nahas will be 30 in 2017. Goldstein, Higgins, Hansen, Thomas the year after.

The 4 axings today won't help North the flag next year. They'll go backwards a little, but Firrito and Petrie in particular aren't big holes to fill. Realistically they're 3-5 years off, like any team that goes down a rebuilding path. Assuming North are even good enough to get there, it's questionable whether even Goldstein, Higgins etc. will still be around in a flag side.

If it was me I'd target dead wood first. Harvey is 900 years old, but will finish top 5 in the B&F again. Of all the guys 30+ I'd probably keep Wells, Harvey and Thompson first then start cutting the rest. North are better with Harvey than they are with Gibson or Ray (rookie listed), it doesn't make sense to just cut Harvey because he's the oldest and keep guys who (a) aren't that good, and (b) won't be around for a flag tilt anyway.

Why is that strange?

Because the team I support treated it's players like shit I somehow can't see when other players are treated so?

I would argue it gives me greater insight into the poor treatment of players.

Or, you could look past the team I support and respond to my post.
If you disagree that's all good. I still think the games record holder deserved to go out on his own terms.
Ok then. Tell me, how are we treating them like shit?

We are giving them all a chance to say goodbye to their melbourne fans. Would they rather say their goodbyes in a souless sydney crowd?

They are all free to play elsewhere.

What if Harvey isnt retiring and will play elsewhere?

Your just jumping on the Hate Norf bandwagon.

I don't necessarily disagree with the decision to release all four.

Certainly I think Dal Santo and Harvey deserved another year if they wanted it, BUT sometimes players need to be told there isn't a spot for them.

However, the timing of the announcement is ****ing deplorable, just woeful.

Scott is contracted, but I would say with near certainty that he won't be coaching in 2018.

North will fall down the ladder next year (which is no big deal, it needs to happen) - but Scott now has a fanbase that hates him and will be in charge of a poorly performed team - he's a dead man walking.

Good v Swans - Woeful v Hawks. Is this performing or signs of what is to come?

If this was announced last week posters may have had a different reaction. Was lucky to play v Swans after the Mitchell hit.

I applaud North for this.
Petrie, DS and Spud were always on the chopping block, and Harvey, as good as he still can be, is 38. What's the point of giving a 39-year-old another year if the powers that be concede they can't win a flag.
Form can dessert an old player almost overnight. Imagine going into round 3 next year without a kick to his name?
They have just opened up a bucketload of cap space.

Unless you're a flag chance, there's no point keeping a 38 year old on your list. They're one injury or form slump away from being finished. North obviously feel like the window is closed, so you move on. It's the right time. Put the games into kids, see what they can do.

If Hawthorn were in North's position, I would expect the same call to be made on at least a couple out of Hodge, Mitchell, Burgoyne, Gibson.

If you leave it up to Boomer to call time on himself, he'd still be going around when he's 50.

Nah but you need old players still in there to help the young guys develop.

One game?

Nobody is questioning North's decision to start getting younger but you can't delist half your team in one season. Boomer is still performing better than many of those other older players (& younger for that matter). He should have been given the choice of one more season.

Look at the difference between how hawthorn treat their club champions and how the cats and north have. Harvey especially deserves to go out on his terms,
You think if the Hawks miss finals next year all of Hodge and co get another year? Al good while winning flags. Clarkson will pull the plug when he sees the writing on the wall.

Please explain why it is deplorable

The hawthorn champions are still in fantastic form, whereas the north 4 are all clearly on the wane form wise. Are the players bigger than the club? Never.

I don't like the way they've been sent off, but the decision is a correct one.

According to the AFL Player Statistics, Boomer has been the 25th most productive player in the league over the past two seasons. He is the second highest ranked North player behind Goldstein.

It begs the question: when was the last time a player this good has been delisted let alone retired? Also when was the last time a club delisted one of their top three players?
